Work Text:
Dave sighed, he felt so exhausted. He took his keys out of the ignition after parking, he sat their for a minute, looking outside one of the windows in his car. It was beginning to get dark and it was pouring outside. He watched as the rain fell, hearing the water droplets slam against the outer surface of his car, seeing the water slowly form into puddles in his driveway and front yard. He gathered up the scraps of energy that the F.I.B. has ripped to shreds and opened the car door, immediately stepping into a puddle.. Great...
When he unlocked his front door and stepped inside, his cats were sitting there waiting for him, meowing at him for food or water or pets. To others, their meows maybe be annoying, but to Davie, they're the best thing he could ever hear. Coming home to five cats is the best thing in the world.
"Yes. Yes. Hello, my little ones." He said, speaking softly to them as he took his shoes off. He was always soft and sweet to his cats, and his ex-wife, ...his child. He would be absolutely embarrassed if someone found him like this. cough cough Steve- He walked into the kitchen, his cats following close behind him like little ducklings. He washed and refilled their food and water bowls. As soon as he set the bowls down, his fur-babies almost immediately surrounded them. He wishes he was as hungry as them, as young, running around and playing... Am I implying that Davie wants to be a cat? Absolutely.
He lazily drapes himself over his couch, he looks up at the ceiling with a blank stare. Dave just wants to sleep, he's so f-ing tired. He's so glad that it's a Friday, but yet again he still has to organize meetings and go shopping. He guesses it isn't so bad, not as bad as the work on the weekdays.
One of his oldest cats hopped up onto the couch near Dave. "Hello, Mason." He said, reaching over to scratch Mason’s head. He purred and meowed at him, Dave meowed back at him, which started a conversation between he and Mason. Likes to have ‘conversations in their language’ sometimes, he thought it was a little stupid when he first started doing, but he felt a little better about doing after a year or two, still feels a little stupid. What’s life with being a little stupid though, huh?
He knows he isn't supposed to have a favorite child, but Mason is his favorite. He grotztt Mason when he was a few weeks old a couple years ago for his son, Jaszon. Jason came up with name for Mason, they were inseparable, Mason would follow him everywhere, sleep with him in his bed, let Jason play with him, he was the best family cat. Then Jason left, Jason wanted to bring the cat with him, but his mother wouldn't him, he was left with Mason.
That was five years ago, now. Eight years since he got Mason for Jason, five years since they were separated. He thought about getting rid of Mason when Jason left, but he knew that his son would want that, so he kept him around. Then came more cats, Angel, which he named after his wife; she is a pure white cat with beautiful greenish yellowish eyes. Mango, he just came with the name -he doesn't even look like one, he's gray and kinda fuzzy with blue eyes. Dinosaur, he used to love dinosaurs when he was a kid, he still thinks that they're pretty cool looking -and he was also getting dino nuggies while deciding on a name for her-; she was all torn up when Dave first got her, but now she's a beautiful calico cat with one green eye and one blue eye. There's Stevie, he’s the meanest out of all of them, but he’s still a really good cat to be around; he named Stevie after Steve, he’s a big fluffy brown and black Maine coon with emerald green eyes. Finally, there’s Mason, his oldest and his greatest; Mason was a pure black cat with bright yellow eyes. He named them after them after the people and things he loves the most.
After having a decent conversation with Mason and a few others, he decided that he should probably eat something, take a shower, and get ready for bed. "Alright, little ones, it was nice talkin' to ya," He sat up, grabbing Stevie who was in his lap and set him aside. Stevie bit him multiple times while he was being moved, but Davie didn't care. "But, daddy's gotta go eat." He stood up and walked himself into the kitchen.
Dave opened up his fridge to see if there's anything he would be up to eating. He saw a cup of yogurt and decided that was good for now. He grabbed the yogurt from his fridge and checked to make sure it wasn't expired. Nope, it wasn't. Good. He closed the fridge and walked over to one of his drawers to grabbed himself a spoon, he opened up his yogurt and began eating.
He propped himself up against the counter, leaning over it, watching his cats play while he ate his yogurt. He pulled out his phone to see if anybody had texted him. Nope. Nobody. Not a single person. That's okay, he doesn't need anybody when he has his cats, his five beautiful babies.
Sure, he doesn't want to die alone, but he's not gonna go out and seek a relationship, he's got too much work to do, he's always stressed and depressed, and he doesn't have enough time. Those are the reasons why his wife left him, he wasn't even that bad a couple of years ago, imagine if she came back now.
He's given up on love after his wife left, and he still has his tiny man crush on Steve and a couple of other hot guys but, he just doesn't know if he could love Steve anymore. Steve isn't the same person he used to be, they both aren't. God, what happened to them? They used to be so good, good friends, good co-workers, in a good place but now it's all gone to shit. Maybe their work is getting to the both of them.
"Meow!" One of his cats distracted him from his thoughts. Dave looked over and he saw Dinosaur sitting at one of his arms, gently pawing on the sleeve of his brown blazer. She must be asking for pets, which Dave is happy to oblige. He starts petting her, in which she starts purring. Dinosaur was always a sweet one.
"Hey, my furious little Dino." He said, his voice barely above a whisper. He's always been the most gentlest with Dinosaur, he's kinda had to. Dave found Dinosaur outside in the rain in a Walmart parking lot, obviously abandoned. He took Dinosaur into arms and just started taking care of her, it was a long process, since Dinosaur didn't trust him or anyone in that fact, but over time Dave has formed a trust with her as their relationship progressed.
Once he finished his yogurt, along with getting distracted giving pets and playing with his cats, he throws away his yogurt cup and puts his spoon in the sink. He began heading to his bedroom, but before doing so he stopped in front of the hallway closet, twisting the knob and gently swinging it open, grabbing two of his neatly folded towels. He shut the door and continued his walk to his bedroom, quickly glancing at the door that once held Jason, his soon. He still kept it all the same, his toys, his bed, the walls, everything. Oh, how he missed him.
He walks into his bathroom in his room to start a shower. He turns the handle to the left, water starts gushing out of the faucet, he steps back a little to start taking his clothes off, keeping his eyes on the ground so he wouldn't have to sulk about his body after looking in the mirror. He doesn't think he looks bad, he's just gotten a little fat over the years. He doesn't like comparing himself with his past self or other men. It's just, he's changed so much. Back then he was full of life and energy, thinner, better looking, he had better control over his life, he had a good thing going. Now, he's just depressed and tired, loses motivation very quickly, fat, ugly, and everything he had loved is gone.
Dave looked at himself in the mirror, he misses the man he used to be. He looked over himself as harsh relentless words rushed through his head. 'You're ugly.' 'Look at yourself! You are disgusting!' ' This is why your ex left you.' 'You will never find love again.' 'You fucked up!' 'You are a fuck up!' He didn't even want to take a shower anymore, he just wants to go to bed, but he caqn'dqqdEt, the shower is already on and he's already nude. Dave drags himself into the shower, the thoughts still running through his mind.
He steps into the shower and it’s hot, it’s burning, steaming, it hurts and stings as the hot water splashes against his skin. He stands still under the shower head, letting his body get used to the burning sensation that is relentlessly attacking his skin. He hums once the burning sensation becomes something he can consider tolerable, the hot feelings of pins and needles pricking his skin is replaced with a less intense warm and numbing sensation.
As Dave washed his hair and body, he thought about his wife, all those times she said he wasn't a real man because he was fat, nonreligious, and was easily turned on by other men and women. His ex-wife, Angelica, was repulsed by the idea that people would have sex for more than just family, whenever she would catch him doing "sinful acts" such as, looking at porn, masturbating, getting a boner when he saw her, and god forbid if she caught him looking at another person.
What she would say to him would make him feel like he's nothing, yet he still loved her and thought that she would give him a chance if he tried to change, biggest mistake of his life. He fell for someone way out of his league and it ended up badly. He hoped it wasn't so bad for his son, he was only fourteen at the time and he didn't want him to stress more than he'd already did with school. He hopes Angel is taking good care of him.
After his divorce, Dave tried his luck at online dating, it didn't end well for him. He tried with both men and women, looking for an actual relationship, hook ups, whatever. Most of the time, they would leave before or after they would meet up. Like, there was this one time where... Nevermind, but let's just say that it was terrible.
Dave has had so many bad and awkward experiences with love and sex that he has stop trying -even though there's Steve, but Steve is a different story, we don't talk about Steve.
Dave turned off the water and stepped out of the shower. He doesn't take too long in the shower, he doesn't see a reason why he should, just wash your hair, wash your body and get out of there. In his opinion it shouldn't take that long. He grabbed the towel that was sitting next to the sink and began to dry himself off, staring at ground since he didn’t want to look at himself again, he’s already seen enough of it.
After drying himself off, he walked out his bathroom and into his bedroom. He usually doesn’t cover himself up since there’s nobody there but he and his cats. He slid his drawer open to see if had anything clean to cover up himself up. He thankfully had a clean pair of boxers to put over himself. He should probably do some laundry this weekend too after he was done shopping, probably buy some detergent and dryer sheets in case he’s out.
Once he’s got himself covered up, he walks to his bed, sitting on the edge of it. Dave got himself settled in, and just as he was about the turn off his lamp, he hears meowing at the door. “Coming, my little ones.” He said as he sighed and flipped the covers off to walk over and open the door for his five beautiful children. He watched as Angel, Stevie, Mango, Dinosaur, and Mason prance into his bedroom and jump up on his bed. He left the door open so the cats can go in and out. Dave walked back to his bed, yawning as he got back into his comfortable bed and flipped the covers over himself. He switched the lights off once everyone found a good place to sleep and he too went to sleep, surrounded by the comforting sound of the rain softly hitting his windows mixed with the gentle purring emitting from his cats.
