Chapter Text

Waverly sat in her office in the Calgary Museum finishing up an email to an acquaintance at the National History Museum, trying to source a particular exhibition piece she happened to know he had.

When she sent it, she got up to head down to the break room, in need of her mid morning tea. The petite omega left the Egyptology department and crossed through the main hall. When she got to the kitchen, the Head of the Museum was there speaking to the chief researcher of the Natural History Department, Rosita, about something.

“Ah Dr. Charles, I need to speak to you urgently. Come to my office now,” Dr. Jeannie Lucado, her Alpha boss, said sharply and walked briskly from the room as Rosita and she shared a questioning look. Waverly abandoned her mug and trotted after the woman who didn’t acknowledge her until they arrived in Lucado’s office.

“Sit.” And so Waverly did.

“I received a call today from Xavier Dolls.”

“The Movie Director?”

“Yes. He is in need of your expertise for a movie that is due to start filming soon.”

“Oh.” Waverly had never done anything like that before; yes, she was one of the Foremost Egyptologists in North America, but that usually meant she spent a lot of time guest lecturing at university’s when she wasn’t curating the Egyptian Department. “OK, well tell him I would be happy to meet with him here or at a location convenient for him.”

“No, he needs you to go to him in Egypt. You will be there for about four months to consult with him. I told him you will be there next week, he is arranging everything.”

“I can’t go to Egypt for four months! I have a child and I’m a single parent!” The Alpha scoffed and waved her hand.

“I told him, and he’s arranging everything for you both, including childcare and a private tutor for the kid. He wants you and you only.”

“What the hell? Don’t you think you should have talked to me first before signing me up for this?” Waverly said indignantly.

“For the money he is paying you, and this Museum, you don’t have a choice. Here.” She handed the omega a piece of paper with large number written on it. Waverly’s eyes widened, it was more than she made in a year.

“Uh... looks like I’m off to Egypt," she said quietly. She really couldn’t afford to turn this down; she was a single mother, and she had always wanted to bring Wren to Egypt but she was broke.

Student loans, a mortgage, childcare and other bills meant things were tight. In spite of her anger for being signed up for something without her knowledge, she was excited to go back to Egypt for something other than excavations. Lucado smiled knowingly and told Waverly to go prepare her staff for her absence and go home and pack.

She hurried back to her office and let out a little happy squeal when the door shut behind her. She quickly sent her team an email requesting an urgent meeting in her office at 8:30 the following morning.

She saw her sister had sent her an email and excitedly opened it. Wynonna was a professional stunt woman for TV and film and worked all over the world. She loved her job and her life but didn’t visit too often. The wild haired Alpha was a free spirit and how Waverly loved her.

The email consisted of a story about how she ended up out drinking several bikers who loved her brash attitude and filthy humour. One, who apparently had tattoos all over his face, asked her to be his ‘Old Lady.’ She had declined but apparently had fucked him anyway.

Waverly replied, telling her sister that she was off to Egypt to consult on a movie, including a lot of emojis and attaching pictures of her daughter in her Indiana Jones costume, that she insisted on wearing to preschool most days, hat included, but she had to leave the whip at home.

She packed away her belongings and dashed home to tell Wren all about their big adventure. The pup had Wynonna’s spirit and her mother didn’t think the child would be upset about it.

When she pulled up into her parking space outside her building, she took a deep breath. She smiled to herself and walked inside, swinging her briefcase and humming to herself. When she reached the 3rd floor, she rushed to enter her sanctuary and find her little girl.

Wren was playing quietly with her toys in the living room and jumped up to run to her Mama and give her a hug.

The little alpha giggled as Waverly picked her up with a groan and kissed her cheek.

“Oh, baby girl, I don’t think I’ll be able to pick you up soon, you’re getting so big.”

“It won’t be long until she is looking down on ya.” Eileen, her child minder laughed. The Irish beta woman was in her late sixties and had a strong Dublin accent. She was a widow and doted on Wren. Waverly had come to think of her as family. Suddenly she felt terrible the woman wouldn’t have a job for the next four months.

“Sweetie, go back to your toys, I need to speak to Eileen.” The pup nodded and ran off.

“Is everything alright, Pet?” the older woman asked.

“Yes it is, well, kind of?” Eileen Chuckled.

“Ah jaysus, Girl, what’s goin’ on?”

“Well I got a job offer today and I took it. But it’s in Egypt and I’ll be gone for four months.” Eileen beamed.

“Ah that’s cracker, Pet, do ya need me to mind herself?”

“Actually, she’s coming with me. The employer is providing a tutor and childcare. I’m sorry, Eileen, I wish I could take you with me. I’ll still pay you your weekly salary.” The woman scoffed and waved her hand.

“Arah, Would ya stop that, Girl. That’s an amazing thing and the young one will love it. I don’t need the money so don’t be worrying about me. Ya know I just do this to fill me days. I’ll be right here waiting for ya to get back!” Waverly hugged the matronly woman and went to have a quick shower before sitting down to eat the hearty meal the Irish woman had cooked.

Fuck, Waverly would miss Eileen’s food.

Over dinner, she told Wren about how they were going to live in Egypt for a few months, and initially the little Alpha squealed with excitement until she found out Eileen wouldn’t be coming.

“Ah now, Pet, it’s alright. Me old bones couldn’t be doing with something like that! It’s only for young ones. But when ya come back ya can tell me all about yer grand adventures, and while yer there, ya can draw me lots of pictures. And we can face time.” Wren had calmed down significantly by the time the older woman left and it was time for bed.

The pup put on her wonder woman pajamas and they talked about what she could and couldn’t bring, but Waverly promised everything she left would be there when they got back. Eileen would mind all her toys.

When she kissed her daughter’s forehead and said goodnight, Waverly headed to the kitchen to pour a healthy measure of wine and went to bed. She propped herself up on the pillows, sipped her wine and read through some newly published papers on her phone.

After two hours or so, she logged into Facebook and immediately saw articles posted about the latest celebrity gossip shared by her friends. She normally wouldn’t bother even looking, but it was about the hottest movie star on the planet: Dimpled Alpha Goddess, sex symbol, and all around badass Nicole Haught.

Waverly couldn’t resist clicking into the article and reading. Nicole and her wife of three years, Shae Pressman, divorced that day. The photos the tabloid photographers took showed the women walking out of the court house, both seemed relaxed.

Waverly clicked out of the article, but scrolling through her news feed she saw multiple images of the ivory skinned red head with the perfect smile and soft brown eyes. Gods. How was there a woman that good looking.

She locked her phone and placed it on the bedside locker before she snuggled down to sleep.

Oh, this was going to be exciting.
