Twister on the Floor

Summary:

Sypha, Trevor, and Adrian are pro-level dancers kicking back and having fun at a social event, when a song comes on that they just can’t pass up.

Notes:

I’ll be honest, this was entirely an excuse for me to write a love letter to West Coast Swing. Apologies to the majority of you who are likely not familiar with it!

Here is a general reference for what a dance floor might look like. Couples (or trios in this fic) more or less keep to one area of the floor, which is called their “slot.” I’ll have more specific reference videos (and WAY more geeking out) in the end notes if anyone is interested.

Here is the song they’re dancing to (the original is just a bit too fast).

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Prompt: Food/Drink/Music

“C’mon, we gotta do this next dance as a steal,” Sypha says excitedly to her boyfriends.

She was just taking a break to grab water and chat with her friend Arnie who was DJing tonight, and she happened to glance over his shoulder. As soon as she saw the next song he had queued up, she’d bid him a hasty goodbye and made her way around the perimeter of the dance floor to where the two of them were sitting, arms draped casually around one another, holding court among a gaggle of other friends.

Trevor and Adrian share a glance. “Sure,” Trevor shrugs.

Sypha grins and picks out a slot on the dance floor just in time. Britney Spears’s slowed-down, pitch-shifted voice comes over the speaker: “One, two, three, not only you and me, got one-eighty degrees and I’m caught in between....”

She starts the song out in close-embrace with Adrian, matching her energy to his own, creating tension between their clasped hands and his hand on her back. She lets her hips groove along to the electronic beat, and she can practically feel Trevor’s eyes on her. The thought makes her grin, and she puts a little extra bump into her booty.

She feels Adrian’s core tense and prepare and then she’s spun out, light and agile on her feet. Trevor’s hovering, looking to cut in, as they meet and part and meet again, enjoying the feel of the song and the floor and each other. The tug of Adrian’s presence at the other end of their connection is gentle but constant, like a stream of running water. He redirects her momentum like it’s as easy as breathing, and Sypha is perfectly content to admire his balletic grace and try to match it with her own stylings.

The robotic echo to the chorus kicks in and Adrian spins her out into a series of hip-catches. There we go. Right on cue, she whirls around from one of them and Trevor’s big hand is there instead of Adrian’s. He catches her momentum, sends her into one more twirl from her hip, then meets her chest-to-chest in an unexpected close embrace—of course, cheeky fucker—and leads her into a sinuous body-roll. Ooh, nice.

They come out of it in time with the beat. Trevor whips her out, catches her again, leads her into an underarm turn—and suddenly Adrian’s hand is there on the connection, smoothly taking Trevor’s in his own.

A-a-are you in? Livin’ in sin is the new thing” sings Britney, enticing. Sypha grins. This’ll be a treat.

She moves out of the way to the end of their slot and pivots her own momentum around to watch them. Adrian’s taller than Trevor, but she knows from her own experience leading him that he feels like a lighter follow than she does, so responsive that he practically floats across the floor.

The end of the pre-chorus stutters off into triplets at “I am counting,” and Trevor anticipates that, whirling Adrian into a series of turns that travel across the floor. He steps lightly in time with the syncopation, making that mane of golden hair fly out behind him. Before he whips his head around to focus on Trevor again, Sypha catches a glimpse of a few ringlets clinging to his nape with sweat, and the sight is enough to make her want to jump the both of them right there and then.

She gives them a few more measures of music, savoring the sparks that practically crackle between them when they make eye contact and the way their hands linger just a bit longer and dip down just a bit lower than when they dance with anyone else outside of their triad.

Okay, that’s enough fun for them. I want in again.

She moves in close, waits for her moment, then darts in smoothly when Trevor’s right hand is free again, though he’s still holding Adrian’s with his left. Trevor rises to the challenge and begins leading them in tandem. Wouldn’t expect any less, Sypha thinks with fond pride.

Three is the charm, two is not the same. I don’t see the harm, so are you game?

She twirls together with Adrian, the two of them moored to the same sturdy anchor of Trevor’s strong hands. They spin out away from each other, then in again past Trevor’s body to step in parallel once more. She can feel herself grinning like a fool, enjoying the way she and Adrian feel connected through Trevor.

A few measures later, he brings her in close, and she registers that both his hands are on her just before he dips her as the pre-chorus starts.

She emerges from the dip right into Adrian’s waiting arms, and the two of them continue like that, the pleasant tension of their connection humming through Sypha’s entire body like a live wire as she twirls and ducks and grooves.

The music slows for the bridge. “What we do is innocent,” Britney croons as Adrian brings Sypha in close, draping her arms around his neck, her torso pressing against his like in a blues-dance embrace. Then Trevor’s behind her, swaying with them in time.

Adrian smiles and releases her. “Let’s just do it, you and me,” plays the speaker as Sypha falls back against Trevor—“you and me,” it repeats, and Sypha’s pulled forward to Adrian again. She can’t help the grin on her face. Nice musicality, guys.

Or three...or four.” Trevor makes a show of looking around for another dance partner, and she lets out a full-throated laugh.

She starts the final chorus out with Trevor, but gets stolen back by Adrian for the last half of it, which doesn’t entirely surprise her. Sure enough, he doesn’t take long to lead her into a dazzling one-foot spin that lasts through the end of the song. The move is a specialty of hers, and Adrian knows how much she loves to show it off.

He dips her out of it as the song ends, and when she stands up Trevor comes in to embrace her and Adrian both. “That was awesome, guys.”

Arnie starts the next song, something slow and acoustic. “Wanna dance this one with me?” Trevor offers.

Sypha holds up a finger, signifying “one moment,” and beelines off the dance floor to locate her water bottle and guzzle from it gratefully. She still doesn’t answer Trevor when she’s done, instead pulling him in for a kiss, deep and thorough, uncaring of who’s watching. Then Adrian gets the same treatment. “You’re so good to me,” she whispers to the both of them, a blissed-out grin on her face.

A girl comes up and asks Adrian to dance—Greta, Sypha’s brain supplies—and she shooes him off to join her.

“Let’s do it,” she tells Trevor with a bright smile, putting her arm in his elbow to head back out onto the floor.

Notes:

Arn is the handsome young Speaker who talks with Sypha’s granddad and Trevor in the first season. I modernized his name to “Arnie” here.

I described “tension” or “pull” a couple of times throughout. In WCS, there is always elasticity in the connection between the two partners; neither person is rigid or stands independent of the other, and the dance in motion constantly flows between push and pull, never remaining static. The default state is a steady, comfortable pull between your hand and your partner’s. It sounds odd but when you're used to it, it feels really nice! And it enables you to feel the slightest motions of your partner’s core on the opposite end of the connection.

People often get theatrical and literal with song lyrics for fun in WCS, so what Trevor does at the end when comically looking around for a fourth partner is definitely something I could see happening in real life!

It’s not usual in my scene to dance with the same partner two dances in a row like Trevor and Sypha do here, but (a) you probably get a pass when you’re dating and (b) pros can more or less do whatever the fuck they want on the social floor—everybody’s just happy to have them there and to get the chance to watch some awesome dancing up close!

More dance videos! All of these are improvised (I know!! 🤯) and at the pro level, which is where the trio is for this fic as well.

As always, thanks so much for reading!
