Codominance

Summary:

Dynamight and Red Riot are some of the top pro heroes in Japan, and that is why they are called in for a raid mission. The raid was supposed to be easy enough. Get in, restrain the villains, don't let anyone escape. That is... until they discovered what the villains were doing in the base.

Codominance is a relationship between two versions of a gene. Individuals receive one version of a gene, called an allele, from each parent. If the alleles are different, the dominant allele usually will be expressed, while the effect of the other allele, called recessive, is masked. In codominance, however, neither allele is recessive and the phenotypes of both alleles are expressed.

Notes:

Let's ignore the fact that I still need to finish Strangely Familiar...

I have been workshopping on this fic with a friend for months now. Months. I said I wasn't going to write it until I finished with S.F. but it's been eating at me. So I decided to write the first chapter. Updates will be less and far between while the other one is finished.

I hope you guys enjoy this one, I have been planning it for so long I can't wait to hear what you guys think!

Chapter 1: The Raid

Chapter Text

Dynamight couldn’t help but grin widely as he arrived at the meetup point and he saw some familiar faces. Being a pro hero meant having a busy work life with little to no time for a social life, especially as the number two hero in Japan. The fact that he had been on yet another mission overseas for the past three months and had just gotten back, made it all that much better. Then he saw the familiar head of long red hair a good distance away, and his grin turned wicked.

Red Riot hadn’t spotted him yet, he was standing with his back towards the entrance, rookie move, as he talked to some extra that Dynamight did not know or care enough to find out. He took a step back, bending his knees as he did the mental math of how big of an explosion he would need, and how high he would have to jump. He readied himself, some people seeing him and already knowing, immediately, what he was planning started moving out of the way. The extras that didn’t know stared at him in confusion.

Dynamight let out a chuckle before he made two simultaneous quick explosions with his hands as he launched himself towards Red Riot. “Oi, shitty hair!” he yelled. Red Riot turns around at both the explosions and the well-known nickname with an expression that Dynamight could only describe as an honestly surprised face, only to change to panic. Dynamight crashed into him full force not even a second after.

Anyone else would have been taken down by a grown-ass man tackling them, let alone with that much force, but Riot wasn’t just anyone. The pro hero had activated his quirk becoming unmovable but taking a step back with the impact to not hurt his best friend or himself.

“Why didn’t you tell me you were back?” Red Riot exclaimed with a roaring laugh. His arms around Dynamight, who had his legs wrapped around the taller hero’s waist as they hugged.

“I just got back last night, got called into this bullshit before I had even woken up,” Dynamight explained, letting his legs drop to the floor, the grin wide on his face. Riot’s arms let him go, but a hand found its way to the blond's shoulder. “I didn’t even fucking know you were in town. Weren’t you on a mission in Fukuoka or some shit?”

Red Riot let out another laugh, “That was a three-day mission within the country. You were abroad for how long again?”

“Don’t try being a smartass,” Dynamight warned him with a playful shove. It was great being around his best friend once more, it never did feel like he was back home until he saw the redhead. The way he smiled at him made his heart race but he never felt as relaxed as he did when Red Riot was around.

“Says the so call pro who almost knocked me down,” Red Riot countered. “In a professional setting among other peers,” he added with a dramatic sigh as if disappointed.

“Oh, stop fucking whining, you-”

“Kachan, welcome home,” Deku said with a bright smile as he walked over to the other two pros.

“Oi, Deku, what the hell are you doing here?” Dynamight exclaimed, but the smile on his face as he put the green-haired hero into a headlock showed that he was glad to see him.

“I was called in,” Deku explained as he pulled out of the headlock. “Do you guys have any info of what’s going on? I was told it has something to do with a raid, but they haven’t really told me anything else. This is weird when it comes to this kind of thing they usually do the debriefs beforehand, but they haven’t said anything this time around. I think there are about… twenty heroes here total? Shoto is here too, but he has one of his interns so he’s busy with that. It has to be a large raid for there to be so many heroes in the same place. It could also be a-”

“Stop fucking mumbling, fucking Deku,” Dynamight rolled his eyes. “If they didn’t tell you, like hell they told us.”

“So… should we go out drinking tonight to celebrate your return?” Red Riot asked before Deku had a chance to reply. The redhead knew the two well enough to know they were always a couple of comments away from a fight. It didn’t escalate to the level it used to back in their first year at UA, but still very destructive.

Dynamight grinned, ignoring stupid Deku and his annoying mumbling, “Fuck yeah, Red.”

“Riot!” Someone in the crowd shouted, making the pro hero turn to see who was calling him.

“Oh, I’ll be right back, I needed to talk to Snapper real quick, I need to make sure he has some intel I need, for another case” Red explained, a hand going to Dynamight’s shoulder, squeezing it before turning to walk away.

Dynamight couldn’t help but watch Red walk away. Red Riot, Kirishima Eijirou, the man built like a mountain and he could probably take a mountain down if he wanted to.

“You’re staring again, Kachan,” Deku teased, taking a step away as he did it.

“Shut your stupid trap, asshole,” Dynamight half yelled, half-whispered.

“You’re the one that jump into his arms as soon as you saw him,” Deku chuckled.

“I will tear your tongue out,” Dynamight warned.

“I  just don’t understand why you haven’t told him about how you feel,” Deku explained.

“You weren’t even supposed to find out! If it hadn’t been for that stupid ass quirk accident you wouldn’t even fucking know,” Dynamight mumbled as he looked around the room to make sure no one could overhear them.  Months ago he had been hit by a quirk during a joined mission with Deku. It hadn’t even been from one of the villains but one of the civilians he rescued getting spooked. It was just a low point all around, and he refuse to speak of it. Deku was the fucker who kept bringing it up.

“If you just listened to me-” Deku started but got smacked on the back of the head before he could finish.

“I said, shut the fuck up already,” Dynamight growled.

“Oh, so you’re back, welcome home,” a voice said behind them.

Both of them turn to find Shoto looking at them with a small smile but looking a bit bored. “Oi, Half and half bastard, get your stupid ass fucking boyfriend to shut up,” Dynamight demanded.

“I like when Izuku talks though,” Shoto said with a frown.

“Ha!” Deku responded as he got away from the blond to go hide behind his boyfriend. The number one hero needed protection from his boyfriend.

“You little shit, get back here so I can beat your ass,” Dynamight glared at Deku, small explosions going off in his hand.

“As if you could take me down, number two,” Deku countered but didn’t get close.

“Oh, now you fucking don-”

“Katsuki, leave him alone,” Red exclaimed as he got back to the group. “What is going on?” He looked between Dynamight and Deku as if trying to figure out what made the blond so angry in such a short amount of time.

“Do you wanna tell him, Kachan?” Deku smirked.

Dynamight could only glare. Luckily, before anyone could ask any more questions, someone called all the heroes’ attention. The briefing was about to begin.

*

The Hero’s commission gave them all a full round down of the situation. They had found a hideout of villains who were trying to start the new League of Villians, some had been part of the war and had evaded capture. They had an idea of how big the base was but very little information of what or who was inside it. There was the speculation of a lab used for quirk experiments. It was a risky operation so to cover more ground no one was to go alone and would be in pairs.

The Hero commission representative started explaining more of the plan, “With everyone in pairs, more ground will be covered at a quicker pace and there will be less of a chance for anyone to escape. We know there are escape routes here, and here,” the man used a laser pointer and indicated two different places on the map of the mountainside the base was built into. “We will have four hero’s by each of them, as a precaution.”

“Have you decided on who’s paired up with who?” One of the heroes standing a couple of feet ahead of  Red Riot asked.

Red was standing next to Dynamight and his other two friends. The plan seemed simple enough, and the question was something that everyone was wondering about. He had been thinking about it himself. As soon as they had mentioned pairs, his mind had gone to Dynamight, just to quickly shake his head at the idea. They would probably want the top two heroes together. He understood that. Why put the second-best with someone who wasn’t even in the top five?

His heart felt heavy in his chest… maybe it was for the better. He had been pining for his best friend for years, but he knew very well that if anyone deserved the best, that person was Bakugou Katsuki. He was far from the best, and he knew that better than anyone else. He had been stuck at number six for two years now, unable to break into the top five.

“We have picked out a few for the escape routs, other than that you are free to offer any input you may have on the matter,” the man said as he looked around the room with a bit of a bored expression as he looked through his notes before calling out the four heroes assign to the escape routes.

The meeting continued, but it didn’t take long after that.

“Come on, shitty hair,” Dynamight said as he started walking towards where they were told to head for their coms for the mission.

“Me? Shouldn’t you head over with Deku?” Red Riot asked as he scratched the back of his neck nervously.

In response, he got a disgusted face, “Why the fuck would I go with Deku? You and I make the best fucking team, and that nerd only slows me the fuck down.” The way the blond said without hesitation before walking off.

Red Riot couldn’t help the smile that spread on his face as he rushed to follow him.

It didn’t take long for everyone to be ready. The pairs came together rather easily, and soon enough everyone was ready to go. It was still early in the day, and the base was half an hour away by helicopter. It was going to be a long day, to say the least, but Riot couldn’t help but feel excited at the fact that he got to fight alongside his best friend again.

**

The adrenaline was high as Dynamight exploded the entrance of the base. Alarms started blaring almost immediately as the heroes made their way inside. As guards started heading their way from three different hallways. “Red and I will go this way,” Dynamight told the others as he went to punch the closes guy to his left.

“Shoto and I will take this one,” Deku exclaimed as he headed towards the right hallway. The hero commission believed that the hallway in the center required more people since it would lead to even more pathways. Deku directed all the other heroes towards the tunnel in the center, “Let’s go, we can’t let anyone getaway.”

A pair of heroes they didn't really know followed Dynamight and Red Riot, but they stayed out of the way as the two friends fought the villains in perfectly synchronized movements. Dynamight couldn’t help but grin as Riot threw a villain his way for him to punch into the ground. Right after he called for Riot to duck to send an explosion towards a group of approaching villains.

There were a lot more villains than he had been expecting from the report. It was like the league of villains would never leave them alone, and it was so fucking annoying. They had spent so much of their high school lives going after those bastards… and now at twenty-seven, he was still having to take down more people that claim to be part of that fuck up group.

“Handcuff him,” Red Riot called out to one of the heroes following them around as he threw a villain over his shoulder as if he was a stuffed animal.

Maybe the extras following them around wasn’t all bad, they hadn’t had to stop to handcuff anyone. Leaving them free to continue fighting without stopping. “Hey, Red, how much you wanna bet we can clean up our hallway before Deku and Shoto clean up theirs,” Dynamight called out as he send an AP shot at a villain who was pointing a gun at them, hitting him right in his hands, making him drop the gun.

Red Riot let out a laugh, as he dodged a couple of punches, before stopping one with his hand as if catching a soft throw, “Are we betting against each other or Deku and Shoto?” He twisted the villain’s arm before punching him in the face, knocking him out with one hit.

“Fucking brilliant idea,” Dynamight said as he send another villain towards a wall. “Oi, Deku,” he said into his comm, “I bet we can fucking clear our area of the hideout before you two bastards do.”

“What are we betting?” Deku’s voice came over the com.

“Losers buy dinner and drinks? Winners pick the place,” Red Riot said into his com as he tore a door off its hinges to make sure there were no villains on the other side. Dynamight couldn’t help but stare for a second, it was so fucking hot seeing Red do shit like that as if it was a piece of cardboard and not a heavy metal door.

“Guess we’re eating soba tonight,” Shoto’s voice came over the com.

“In your fucking dreams, icy-hot,” Dynamight exclaimed, “We are going to get some nice expensive steak dinners.”

“Is it a bit unprofessional of us to be making bets like this in the middle of a mission?” Deku suddenly asked.

“If you back out you still have to buy dinner,” Red Riot said as he dropped to a knee.

Dynamight grin, wasting no time to use him as a stepping stool to launch himself into a group of villains that were approaching setting off explosions to take them all out at once. “Fucking awesome,” Dynamight grinned.

“We hadn’t gone bowling in a while, have we,” Red Riot mused playfully.

The fight continued, the hallway was a lot longer than they had expected, but after the first few initial confrontations, they were mostly checking rooms and closets for anyone hiding in them. A lot of the villains left gave up without a fight, which had the blond hero feeling rather annoyed. He finally got to fight alongside his best friend once more after so long, and they weren’t even putting up a fight.

“We are pretty much done over here,” Red Riot said into his com as they were checking the last few rooms of their area. A rock wall at the end of the hallway marking the end of the line for the villains. “Does anyone else need assistance?”

“Oi, Deku, are you guys fucking done, or did we just win?” Dynamight said as he dragged the last of the villains into a pile on the floor and the extras were still handcuffing a few more villains.

Different teams checked in, saying that they were almost done on their end, or that they had their situation handled, but no word from Shoto and Deku. Red Riot turn to look at Dynamight who was having the same thought. Something was wrong.

“Deku, are you guys alright,” Red Riot called into his com.

Still no reply.

“Ah fucking shit,” Dynamight said before he started running, Red Riot right behind him.

They were halfway back the hallway when Deku came on through the coms, there was a lot of what sounded like screaming in the background, “Red Riot, Dynamight, you need to get over here, now. ”

Red Riot turn to look at Dynamight who was running beside him, a worried look passing between them before they both tried to run even faster.

***

Dynamight expected a couple of things to happen when he got to Deku’s and Shoto’s location. He expected to see them outnumbered, or maybe they had fallen into a trap. Worst case scenario they had been taken down and now Red and he was on a rescue mission of some sort because Deku lost focus whenever the half-and-half bastard was around, and he fucking warned him about it too, the dumbass.

What he didn’t expect was to see was Deku awkwardly holding a screaming infant while Shoto restrained a lady wearing a lab coat. She was fighting viciously against him, screaming at him to let her go. “You heroes don’t understand the importance of what I am doing here! Society is sick!” she screamed, her black hair in disarray from the struggle. She spotted Red Riot and Dynamight, she stopped screaming and just glared at them.

Red Riot didn’t waste any time, he took a couple of steps forward, taking the screaming child from Deku. “What is going on?” he said as he cradle the baby that couldn’t be more than 8 months old. “Where did this baby come from?” The baby seemed to calm down a bit, now in the redhead’s arms.

“She was holding a syringe towards him,” Deku said, his jaw tight.

“We weren’t told anything about a child,” Dynamight said as he stared at the baby. He had chubby cheeks, wet from his tears, bright red eyes, and black hair standing at odd ends. He was only wearing a diaper, and judging by the smell, he needed changing. The baby's sobs shook his whole body as he held on to Red Riot's hand.

“I don’t think they knew,” Deku said as he headed over to the computer.

“I’m taking her out with the others,” Shoto said, the woman was still struggling but was being quiet. “Maybe she will have some answers about this.” He started dragging her out of the room as she glared at the child and Red.

“We will need to take the hard drive,” Dynamight told him as he looked over Deku’s shoulder. “They probably tried to delete some shit as soon as they heard the alarms. Maybe some of the techs at H.C. can restore some of it.”

“What were they trying to do to you, little guy?” Red Riot said to the baby who now was starring at him with wide eyes, tears still filling his eyes.

“The syringe had morphine in it,” Deku deadpan.

Dynamight’s mouth dropped open, “She was trying to fucking kill him?” He had half a mind to chase after Shoto and kick the bitches ass. That was a fucking infant who couldn’t even talk let alone defend himself. How fucking twisted could a person be?

Dynamight turned to look at Red, who was holding on to the baby a bit tighter now against his chest, eyes wide at the revelation. “What were they doing here?” he asked, just above a whisper, his eyes looking around the abandoned makeshift lab.

“I don’t know, but we are going to find out,” Deku told them.

****

They had made it back to the Hero Commission’s headquarters, the villains taken to detention cells to await questioning and the heroes go debriefed. Everyone but Dynamight and Red Riot, who had been ushered to a conference room. Deku had told them he would join them as soon as he got the hard drive he had taken from the lab to the techs, Shoto didn’t even explain what he was doing as he followed Deku.

One of the secretaries had gone and fetched them some things for the baby, diapers and clothes, as well as a blanket to lay him on. “Is he alright?” Bakugou asked as he let his gauntlets drop on the opposite side of the room from where the baby was before walking over.

Kirishima nodded, “He seems fine, nothing seems to be hurt. Will need a check-up though.” The baby was laying on its back on his new blanket on top of the conference room table, his wide eyes taking everything in. Kirishima was sitting right in front of him, holding one of the tiny hands in his own.

“What were those fuckers doing,” Bakugou wondered as he went to sit next to Kirishima. The baby turned to look at him, eyes wide and curious. Those red eyes, Bakugou was sure he had seen those red eyes somewhere before. He reached over with a hand, brushing down the baby’s hair carefully. “Should I be offended that they got him a Deku-themed onesie?” he huffed, looking at the hideous green thing.

Kirishima let out a laugh, “It’s just, for now, you can buy him Dynamight merch later… depending on what they decide to do with him.” Kirishima’s face turns serious as he thinks on that one.

“I was thinking Red Riot, he seems to have taken a liking to you,” Bakugou hummed.

“Oh he would look very manly in that for sure,” Kirishima laughed.

“Do you think his parents were villains?” Bakugou asked, hoping otherwise. Hopefully, they were out there worried sick over their little boy that way they could take him back to a loving home.

They don’t talk for a bit, the only sounds coming from the baby babbling to himself and hitting Kirishima’s hand absentmindedly. There would have to be DNA testing for whatever family they found for the baby, make sure he didn’t fall into the wrong hands. Fuck, this was going to be a lot of paperwork as well.

“Hey,” Kirishima says to the baby who had started to try to put the redhead's hand into his mouth. “Are you hungry?”

“Ah, shit, he hasn’t eaten has he?” Bakugou realizes as he starts looking at the bag of things the secretary got for the kid. Before he can figure out how the formula works, the door slams open.

Deku stands at the door, a file in hand, eyes wide as he starters at them before his eyes fall on the baby. Todoroki is with him, also openly staring at the baby, neither of them saying a word.

“What the hell was that for?” Bakugou demands as Deku walks over slowly.

“I- I know who the kid’s parents are,” Deku started saying but snapped his mouth shut. "Well... who they technically are..."

Kirishima’s eyes light up as he stands, picking up the baby along with him, “You do? Please tell me they’re nice people. Are they coming to get him now?”

Deku just stares at Kirishima, his mouth opening and closing a couple of times. Todoroki places a hand on his shoulder as if for support, giving his boyfriend a nod as if telling him to go on. “The lady, villain, the-the one that was with him when we found him has a quirk that allows her to manipulate DNA. According to her file, it was a very unique but weak quirk that lets her rearrange small parts of DNA if she knows what she is looking for in the genetic makeup.” Deku walked closer to them as he talked. “She has been using it to create villains using heroes’ DNA to make sure the kids are gifted in talent and useful quirks. A way to make sure they have the greatest potential according to her notes that are very detailed about what she expects from every single trial. The problem is that is very time-consuming because she has to do this part by part as if she’s building a human from nothing using contrasting DNAs. Also, it isn't very stable. They have been doing this for a while and-”

“Izuki breath,” Todoroki tells him as Bakugou and Kirishima just stare at the green-haired man.

Deku takes a breath, running a hand through his hair. “There… there was only one successful trial… number 76, and it’s him,” Deku tells them, his eyes falling on the baby in Kirishima’s arms.

“Wait, they used hero DNA?” Kirishima asks, eyes wide. “That means, that technically the parent or parents are heroes right? Maybe they would be willing to take him in?”

“That’s right,” Bakugou realizes. “We need to contact whoever they are, they need to know about this. Oi, Deku do you know who’s DNA did that crazy bitch use?”

Deku let out a shaky breath, as he opened the file and let it fall on the table to reveal a mess of notes and formulas Bakugou didn’t understand, but the names at the top of the file made his eyes wide. “She used DNA from Pro heroes Dynamight and Red Riot,” Deku said as he stared openly at the baby as if trying to piece something together.

Kirishima and Bakugou stared at each other before they turned to look at the infant that was babbling to himself as it sucked on his hand. Suddenly, Bakugou realized why the eyes looked so familiar. The baby’s eyes were exactly like Kirishima’s.
