Work Text:

Campus lights turned on automatically when it got dark. The university radio station was playing through the loudspeakers, the show at the time was announced as “best songs of the year”. As it was a radio station run by students and played music 24/7, the announcers of each show rotated. That day, it was the turn for Rafael Barba to run the show. With grace, he developed as the announcer, and one by one he presented the songs. They had a ranking that changed each Saturday by the votes of the students during the week.

In one of the female dorms, the radio had been playing since the show has begun and they were still listening. The door opened at the same time that Rafael announced the song number 32 of the ranking:

Won’t you come see about me?
I’ll be alone dancing you know it baby
Tell me your troubles and doubts
Giving me everything inside and out and…

Olivia, wrapped in a towel, and with her hair wrapped in another one, got in the room. She was getting ready for a party. She danced across the room, humming the song, as she had done all afternoon with all her favorite songs. She reached into her closet repeatedly, took severals hangers with different outfits, and in front of the mirror, she tried each one. Finally, she chose a black top, with a red, puffy, v-neck sweater, whose wide sleeves ended at her elbows, with tight black pants and short red boots.

Slow change may pull us apart
When the light gets into your heart, baby
Don’t you, forget about me
Don’t, don’t, don’t, don’t

“Don’t you… forget about me,” Olivia sang before the mirror, while she was doing her hair. When she got to a result that she liked, she put the brush aside. She didn’t use to wear too much makeup, but for a night party, it was worth it. She put some color on her lips, some eyeshadow on her eyelids, and some mascara on her lashes. The song ended and Rafael talked about it for a few minutes before he announced the next song that was already playing.

The power of love is a curious thing
Make a one man weep, make another man sing
Change a hawk to a little white dove
More than a feeling that’s the power of love

Just when she finished with a little perfume on her neck, someone knocked at the door. She opened only to meet Rafael himself, her lifelong friend. They had grown up together at the same building, their apartments only two floors off distance. Inseparable friends at school, they had been there for each other when they had needed it. They thought their friendship would turn into something long-distance when they finished school, but by those twists of fate, they had ended up with the same college options.

“Rafa!” she exclaimed surprised, “What are you doing here? I thought you were on the radio… I just listened to you talking in there.”

“Let’s just say that I got paid a favor” he replied and shrugged with a mischievous laugh on his lips “It’s a prerecorded show, no one will notice. Are you ready for that party?”

First time you feel it, it might make you sad
Next time you feel it, it might make you mad
But you’ll be glad baby when you’ve found
That’s the power makes the world go'round

It was a crowded party, people made groups outside and inside of the fraternity, occupying each space enabled. Some were dancing, some were just talking to each other, there were some that had taken a beer keg, hoarding it, and there were those who served shots for anyone who wanted to test their resistance. The party was to celebrate the end of the exam period, now they were free until the next semester and they were ready to drink and enjoy the night.

They started with a beer pong game, in which they were a team as always. They showed right away that it was their specialty and one by one, they defeated their opponents. They had to drink now and then but they celebrated every victory. When there were no more challengers, they moved on to a new game.

We’re talking away
I don’t know what I’m to say
I’ll say it anyway
Today is another day to find you
Shying away

After a few shots, they were seated on the ground, playing suck and blow cards. Olivia watched the rest of the players carefully, and then she got the perfect technique to take the card when it was her time to suck. However, she still didn’t handle very well the technique to deliver it by blowing it. The first time she was ok, the second she almost lost the card and by the third time, the card fell, resulting in a kiss with Rafael.

Everyone laughed about it, including both of them, after all that was the point of the game, right? However, beneath all the jokes and laughter, lay a truth reflected in Olivia’s eyes. She would never say it out loud because Rafa was her lifelong friend and she wouldn’t dare to lose him for such a foolish thing, but for a while, she had realized that what she felt about him was much more than a friendship. It had taken her a while to acknowledge what she felt, then she tried to know if there was a chance that he felt the same, making some hints as jokes. As he never said anything about it besides the jokes, Olivia had decided that she won’t do anything about it. She’d rather be his friend, than not have any relationship with him.

But that kiss made her feel something very deeply.

You’re all the things I’ve got to remember
You’re shying away
I’ll be coming for you anyway

When the clock struck 1:30 am, Olivia went outside the fraternity, needing some air. She had always been very careful when consuming alcoholic drinks at parties or wherever. She had grown up watching her mother drunk and she had dealt with her hangovers, so she had promised herself to never get that drunk. That night she was one or two drinks over her self imposed limit. She was dizzy and happier than usual, so she needed some fresh air to clear her mind, and a wall behind her to make sure that the floor wasn’t moving.

Rafael went out of the fraternity with some friends. They were smoking and he made some smoke rings that he blew to demonstrate his ability to his friends. After a few minutes, he noticed that Olivia was out there too, and their gazes meet. He invited her to join them with a nod of the head and she approached after making sure that the floor wasn’t moving anymore. She turned down the cigarette they offered her, and she participated with enthusiasm in the conversation they were having.

I gotta take a little time
A little time to think things over
I better read between the lines
In case I need it when I’m older

By 3:30 am they had already left the party. The night was warm and quiet. The crickets hidden among the plants were the only thing they could hear, besides the music, and the dew had already moistened the grass. Rafael and Olivia walked in no hurry to arrive at the dorms. Always enjoyed each other’s company and the topics of conversation never seemed to run out when they were together.

With the boots in her hands and barefoot, Olivia walked balancing on the curb. After a long way, she lost her balance and fell over Rafael, who stumbled a few steps, but he didn’t fell.

“It seems that someone can’t keep their balance,” he said between laughs, holding her in his arms.

“Hey! That wasn’t that bad. Why don’t you show me how you do it?” she replied, she pouted and nudged him.

“Ok then, I’ll show you how this is done by someone who can take two steps without falling,” he joked.

After a couple of steps on the curb, Rafael also lost his balance and fell over Olivia, who didn’t have the same strength as him to hold it and they both fell to the ground.

I’m gonna take a little time
A little time to look around me
I’ve got nowhere left to hide
It looks like love has finally found me

“What were you saying? What was that about ‘someone who can take two steps without falling?” She mocked him.

“I have done better than you!”

“No, you don’t! Balance is not your thing” she said laughing and sat on the ground.

“Oh, yeah?” Before she could stand up, Rafael held her in his arms and tickled her. Olivia laughed right away, squirming in his arms. The advantage of knowing each other for so long was that he knew all her weak points.

“No, no… Rafa!” she exclaimed between laughs. They both rolled across the grass until she could escape from his arms. “I’ll get revenge.” She sat out of breath and with her back against a bush.

“Really? And how do you plan to do it?” He challenged her.

“I’m not sure, I’ll find a way.” Olivia narrowed her eyes planning her revenge. She stared at him with her arms crossed against her chest, which could be intimidating if not because, a moment later, she was laughing again in Rafael’s arms. Somehow she got free and when she turned around to face him, their lips met in a kiss.

I was beat incomplete
I’d been had, I was sad and blue
But you made me feel
Yeah, you made me feel
Shiny and new.

As they parted from the kiss, their gazes met. For an instant everything was too real, everything intensified around them: the noise of crickets, the grass under them, the music in the distance that kept playing. None of them moved, no even an inch, fearing that anything could fade the moment. But it didn’t. They kissed again. Olivia rolled over him to kiss him as she had dreamed of for a long time.

Rafael sat with Olivia on his lap. He reached out to kiss her neck and she threw her head back to make room for him. She ran her fingers over his shoulders and took off his shirt, then she took off her sweater. He took off his t-shirt and she took off her top, remaining only with her bra. They took a moment to observe each other, admiring the curves that they had longed to contemplate and caress with their hands. Olivia wondered if it was a product of alcohol and if what they were doing was correct, she knew there was no turning back if they finished all. She didn’t know what that could mean for their friendship and was scared about it, but any trace of logical thinking was banished when Rafael kissed her neck again, and this time he went down kissing her chest and gentle nibbles on her skin.

They felt like teenagers, exploring their bodies for the first time. But they weren’t beginners, they had enough experience to give each other lots of pleasure. Rafael put his hand inside Olivia’s pants, and with one finger he played with her clit. Before long her wetness was something he just couldn’t ignore then he introduced a finger inside of her. Feeling more and more aroused, Olivia sought his lips to kiss him, in a poor attempt to stifle a groan. She moaned anyway a few minutes later. The first one of many that night.

Like a virgin
Touched for the very first time
Like a virgin
When your heart
 beats
Next to mine.

One by one they took off their clothes until they were totally exposed in front of each other. From instant to instant, he was inside of her. He was laying down with his back over the grass, she was on top of him, sitting with her legs kneeling on either side of his body. When Rafael tried to move and speed up, it was time for her little revenge. Olivia held him by the shoulders, making him stay against the ground. She moved her hips in a steady and slow motion, very slowly. With a sly smile, she stared at him without losing eye contact at any time. He licked his lips feeling how the heat increased, accumulating in his core.

“Ok, ok… you had your revenge,” he said after a couple of minutes, feeling like he couldn’t keep like that any longer. With his right hand, he caressed her breast, while his left hand caressed her waist “Could you…?”

Olivia bit her lower lip in satisfaction at the sight he gave her back. Then she speeded up her hips movement. Waves of pleasure invaded their bodies with each movement. He ran his hands over her body, caressing every inch of skin that he could. As she rode him, he played with her clit, caressing it until she closed her eyes ecstatic with pleasure. He heard her moan, groan his name and beg him. He felt her shake and surrender to him completely. He drove her beyond orgasm and when they finished, they fell exhausted side by side.

Me and you and you and me
No matter how they toss the dice, it had to be
The only one for me is you, and you for me
So happy together

The sun had not yet appeared, but the sky was beginning to get clear. They had dozed cuddled behind the shrub. Olivia rested on Rafael’s chest, with his shirt on but unbuttoned. She opened her eyes, aware of what had happened and where they were. She knew they had to leave before sunrise, otherwise, they’d find lots of morning runners. With her left hand, she caressed his chest, running her fingers gently over his skin.

“Rafa… hey, Rafa. Wake up.”

“Five more minutes…” he replied with his eyes still closed.

“It’s dawning, we have to get up.”

It took her a few more minutes to wake him, he was a very heavy sleeper. They sat on the grass and Olivia straightened her hair. She sought to cover herself as much as possible with his shirt until she got her pants on. It wasn’t like he hadn’t seen it all last night, but it was the custom.

“Hey… About last night… ” he said and scratched the back of his neck.

She looked at him expectantly. She was afraid that he had some regrets, that he blamed the alcohol or maybe said it was a mistake, but after a while, she just knew by his face that he didn’t regret it. She smiled and took his hand, and intertwined their fingers.

“It is a gift to love your best friend.”

Then he smiled in relief, stood in front of her, put a hand over her waist and the other over the back of her neck and then he kissed her. Then they kept walking.

I can’t see me lovin’ nobody but you
For all my life
When you’re with me, baby the skies’ll be blue
For all my life
