I just kept looking at you

Summary:

The whole UA is obsessed with love alarm, except for one Bakugou Katsuki who refuses to download the app, and he gets pestered by his friends to get one. But if he does, then the feelings he has been trying to hide would come to the light, and no one wants that.
Nevertheless, he decides to use the app just once when he is alone in his room, and he gets one heart. Making him believe that his love could not be one sided after all. Except, it might have not been Kirishima who made his love alarm sound.

Aka, the love alarm au that no one asked for.

Notes:

I have not read the story on web toons, I only saw the show on Netflix. All you need to now, is that the app is supposed to tell you when someone in a ten-meter radius is in love with you. In the show it’s only shown a circumference, but I wondered if it could actually work as a sphere, and it just so happened to fit with this scenario, so here we are. By the way, the Todobaku would only be hinted at first, but they are endgame, so bear with me.

Chapter 1: Hidden feelings

Chapter Text

When Love Alarm arrived to Japan, it took only a couple weeks to be everywhere. There was publicity in every corner and there were a few new shows that were written around that concept. It was the hottest trend, and there was no sign that it would go down any moment, so it shouldn’t have been a surprise that every teen had already downloaded it, even those from the UA hero course were obsessed with the thing.

At first there were only a couple of persons who had it, but of course the curiosity of knowing if they were liked by someone was too strong to resist, then the rest didn’t want to be left out and got it. Now, every single student in UA had the stupid thing. All but one.

“Come on Bakugou, you won’t regret downloading it!” Mina chided with her head resting on the blond’s desk. It had been like that since a week ago when it became official that he was the only person, teachers aside, that didn’t have love alarm downloaded. And it was just his luck that his self-proclaimed friends were the most obsessed idiots of them all.

“I don’t fucking want to have that shitty app” was his typical response, and it worked most of the time. A growl usually did the trick.

“It’s not shitty!” the girl yelped scandalized as if he had somehow insulted her whole beliefs. Which he suspected was kind of accurate. She had made it her personal purpose to make sure everyone she knew had the application.

“Yeah man, look what it did for Midoriya and Uraraka” Kaminari said and pointed at the blushy couple at the back of the classroom.

Uraraka was broke, but apparently, she thought having a smartphone was so important so she could download the app. At least he hoped that came from the money she earned at her Hero practices, and not from her parent’s pockets. The very same day she got her new phone and installed Love alarm, she went straight to Midoriya to make his alarm sound. And shocking news, he made hers sound too. So now everyone had them as some sort of example that the app helped people find the love of their lives.

“Any person with fucking eyes could have told they had a fucking crush on each other” Bakugou explained, holding back the gag that formed in his throat whenever he saw how sappy the couple was. When he turned back to face the idiotic pair, he pushed Mina’s face off his desk and then frowned at the electric boy, “they had to be fucking stupid if they really needed a phone app to realize their feelings for each other”.

Kaminari blushed slightly at that and took his hand to the back of his neck to scratch lightly in shame. He gave a quick look to the other side of the room and Bakugou didn’t need to turn to know he was staring at Jirou, “okay, maybe they are not the best example, but without it, I might have never known Jirou liked me back!”

“Totally!” exclaimed the pink girl with excitement, “not even I knew she had a thing for him.”

“Whatever” he rolled his eyes with fake uninterest. That might be a better example of how no one could fool the thing, which was the actual reason why he didn’t want to get the thing. But of course, he would never admit that to anyone.

“Come on” Mina leaned over his desk slightly to be closer and then wiggled her eyebrows suggestively, which already indicated she was going to say something annoying, “don’t you want to know how many persons like you?”

His mind was filled involuntarily with images of his redhaired best friend, the same ones that appeared in his dreams almost every single night. Like he had said before, he didn’t need a cellphone app to tell him when he likes someone, because he was well aware of just how madly in love he was with Kirishima. He knew that the moment he turned the app on, then he would make Kirishima’s love alarm sound every time they were in the same room.

Despite popular belief, he was fully conscious of his feelings. However, he was not sure if they were reciprocated. Kirishima was constantly following him around like a puppy and he did everything he could to save him back at Kamino, even putting his place in the hero course at risk. But then again, so did Deku, and here he was, making round face’s love alarm sound every ten minutes instead of his, so he couldn’t generalize behavior patterns as a sign that someone liked him. Especially since he was in love and couldn’t thrust his judgment on something like that. He would most likely see what he wanted to see.

“Like that would help me become the number one hero!” he responded with the one thing he could always retort to avoid giving a real deep answer.

“As if!” the girl threw her hands in the air with exasperation and an eye roll attempt that look more like she was doing funny faces. In that moment, the sound of a love alarm at the back of the room got her attention. Surely from the half and half boy, who seemed to get hearts so often it was annoying. A smirk formed on her face before teasing, “I bet you are just scared you won’t even have half of the hearts Todoroki has”.

Now it was time for Bakugou to smirk teasingly, he found out months ago about how his classmates would often throw challenges like this to get him to do what they wanted. As if he would fall for the same trick endlessly. Besides, Todoroki’s heart alarm only annoyed him because he never turned the sound off, not because he was jealous of the attention he got. He threw his head back in a mocking manner before speaking again, “like I care how fucking popular that half n’ half bastard is.”

“Are you seriously going to let him win like that?” Kaminari kept teasing him, not ready to go down without a fight.

“I’ll tell you both what I told Jeanist…” he grinned deviously and lift his hands in the air to show the tiny explosions he always used as a threat. He wanted it to be crystal clear for them, “I don’t care who is more liked, just who is fucking stronger!”

The pair looked defeated at each other, as they were clearly not going to get what they wanted. They turned around to head back to their sits, and once Kaminari thought they were out of earshot he sighed, “guess we’ll never know who’ll win the bet.”

Bakugou snorted angrily. The shitty extras thought he was deaf, but he already knew there was a current bet on who’s love alarm he would make sound and the idiots were probably just trying to get the answer. He knew from the whispers that at least half of the class bet that he didn’t like anyone, and the rest were divided on Midoriya and Uraraka. Which was the origin of the crazy theory that he was in love with one, jealous of the other and therefore hated the app for bringing them together. Surprisingly, that wasn’t Todoroki’s assumption. To his horror, the half n’ half bastard was actually the only one who hit a bull’s eye and said he would make Krishima’s love alarm sound.

That of course made him angry, but part of the anger came from the fact that everyone could tell he had an ulterior reason to not get one. So maybe he was scared like his friends were saying, it still wasn’t their damned business to discuss. He didn’t mind if no one liked him, and his attitude was proof of that, but the idea that the one he was in love with, didn’t love him back, was simply devastating.

Still, that was also the only way he could find out if Kirishima liked him back without having to risk being rejected. He only had to wait for a moment where they were alone in a ten-meter radius while being separated so the redhead didn’t know what was happening.

So that’s why he was now in his room with the lights out, an hour after loudly saying goodnight in the common room. The app fully installed and waiting for him to turn it on. He sat on his bed with his head pressed to the wall he shared with his best friend, and waited silently for there to be sound on the room next door.

After what felt like a lifetime, he heard Kirishima’s footsteps bumping loudly and then there was a bouncing sound of Kirishima throwing himself against the bed. Which was the best indicator that he was alone, since he insisted it was manly to be a good host. He smiled lightly at the reminder of the redhead’s dorkiness, but then shook his head to get his mind back on track.

Not even a second after turning the thing on, he heard two love alarms sounding at the same time, one came from behind the wall where his head was resting –just as he expected–, and the other one from the device he was holding in his hands. He looked at the number one shining below the beating heart on his cellphone as if it would disappear if he blinked.

A million thoughts rushed through his head, all revolving around a certain redhead. His mind was a complete mess, and he couldn’t care less about the huge smile forming on his lips or the obvious blush he felt spreading all over his face. All he cared about, was that the boy he was madly in love with had just made his love alarm sound, just like he yearned since he first heard his classmates gossiping about the (maybe not so anymore) stupid app.

He would have laid down happily on his bed for an eternity, staring at the one proof that his love was requited, but he heard the receptor of his feelings yelping loudly from the other side of the wall and Bakugou turned the damn (blessed) thing off and pretended to be sleeping.

A quick series of footsteps could be heard, followed by the door swinging open and then a yell asking, “is anybody there?”.

When no one replied, he heard the boy walking up to his room, but stopping before knocking. Probably not wanting to wake the explosive boy up. And then heading back to his own room.

Bakugou imagined how cute the red head must look with his confused expression, wondering what on hearth had happened to make his love alarm sound for a brief second. He also wondered what would have happened if he had left the thing on so he could find out it had been him who made it sound, maybe they could had gotten together that same night. But that was not the way Bakugou Katsuki worked. He would wait for the perfect occasion to rebel himself. Preferably on a way that didn’t need love alarm to play match makers like the other idiots.

He uninstalled the app and deleted it from his search history before going to sleep, just to make sure there was no proof of what he did that night.

He also went to sleep with a big smile on his face.
