Chapter Text
“Oh DREAM!” George shouts from behind him, to the left. Dream’s feet hit the ground in quick succession as he sprints across the forest. The endereye falls a few blocks before him and he grabs it, throwing it up again. He’s frantically following the particle trail of the pearl, hunters hot on his heels. This is the closest manhunt they’ve had in a long time. A fight to the finish, anyone’s game. The endereye breaks and Dream curses as he pulls out another one from his limited supply. It has to be enough.
As he reaches down to grab the eye, an enchanted sword cuts into the back of his heel, causing him to collapse. He scrambles to stand again but he’s too late. Sapnap’s blade slams into his chest, piercing through his chest. Dream’s hands come up to the blade, staining them crimson red. He heard cheering somewhere above him. He doesn’t even have time to feel anything other than shock before he is dead.

Dream jolted awake, frantically grasping at the green fabric of his hoodie. The fabric was unscathed, soft and worn. He focused on slowing his breathing, feeling the wholeness of his hoodie and the bed around him. The sun was slowly peeking through his blinds, streaking the floorboards. Dream allowed the familiarity of his room to soothe him, tying him to reality.
He didn’t usually have nightmares, not really. Sometimes he would fear the future or regret past decisions, but not nightmares like this. Manhunt was fun. He enjoyed the adrenaline rush, feeling the wind whipping past his ears, the terrain under his feet, the triumph of delivering that last blow to the dragon. Manhunt had always been a fun skill-based pastime. It was never serious and never mattered. They always played in a separate world so no lives were lost or wounds obtained. There was nothing to worry about.
After gathering his thoughts, Dream dragged himself from bed, his joints popping as he stood. He made his way to the kitchen, Patches greeting him and winding around his feet. Happily petting her, Dream filled up her food bowl and watched her eat for a few seconds before going to the fridge to feed himself. Settling on leftover pumpkin pie, he sat down at the table to eat when his communicator buzzed.
Gogy: you make the new world yet? im ready to kick you ass! 09:53AM
Dream chuckled as he brought his plate to the sink. Putting on his mask, he opened the admin panel and began to set up the new world for this manhunt. Entering his codes, the world began to swirl and pitch, making Dream’s stomach drop. Slowly his vision blurred and reformed in a new world. He was somewhere in a mountain range, snow covering the ground. Not the best spawn, but manageable. Pulling out his communicator, he messaged the group chat.

Dream tucked his communicator back into his pocket, waiting for the others to spawn in. Once the group was assembled, Dream punched Sapnap in the shoulder before taking off, full sprint.
“He’s going!” Bad yelled, immediately starting his pursuit. Dream jumped between jagged rocks with ease, sprinting for the small patch of trees about thirty blocks ahead. George split off to the left, probably going to grab materials, while the other three chased at his heels.
Ant hit him twice, preventing him from getting wood. Dream dashed away, off the mountain into a spruce forest biome. Ducking and weaving between trees without pattern, Dream quickly lost the hunters in the maze of trees. Gathering wood and berries as he ran, Dream set his sights on a desert biome through the trees. Getting a temple would give him a huge upper-hand.
Bad caught up to him, shouting his location to the others and barely missing a hit on Dream’s shoulder. He can hear the thundering of running feet behind him as he dodges, taking off towards the desert.

Hastily-made iron sword in hand, stone pick hanging from his belt, Dream slowly crept through the cave systems. He heard his friends’ voices from nearby, bickering amongst themselves. He just needed to get past them so he could get out and find a lava pit. Deciding against getting closer, Dream began to dig up, building his way towards the surface again.
“If I put it in the furnace, it's mine!” George shouted.
“Well, I took it out of the furnace!” Sapnap retorted.
“It’s my food! I got it!”
“Well, now it’s my food”
“Bad! Tell Sapnap to give my food back.”
“Sapnap, you need to—”
“Guys, shhhhh. I hear something.” Dream froze with the people below.
“…That was digging, right?”
“Yeah, he’s nearby.”
“Get the furnaces.”
Shit.
Dream started digging again, with more urgency this time. No need to be quiet if they already knew he was here. They also probably knew he was going up. He rushed to chip into the stone, swinging quickly to crack the blocks, stacking the crumpling stone below him to boost him up.
Finally reaching the surface, Dream found himself on the edge of a forest and a plains biome. Perfect. The instant he was out of his pit, Dream began to run into the plains, scanning the ground for the light of lava. He could hear the hunters exiting the cave behind him. He needed to hurry.
The sun beat down on his neck, making him sweat in his iron helmet. He really needed better gear but time was not on his side. He veered to the left, trying to throw off the hunters, but he miscalculated and they ended up even closer than before. Dream could hear their taunting from behind him as he ran, trying to decipher the codenames of the plans they were discussing.
Dream ran forward, not looking back as the hunters split off again. Probably saw a village or want more resources, he reasoned. Cows and sheep turned their heads as he bolted past, one of the hunters dangerously close behind him.
An iron sword sliced at the back of his thigh, causing him to stumble and cry out. The fresh cut stung painfully, wetting the bottom of his pants with blood. Regardless, he kept running.
Coming around a hill, Dream nearly slammed into George. How was he here? Whirling around, Dream moved to sprint to his right, spotting Sapnap approaching from that direction. In his peripheral vision, he could see Ant coming over the crest of the hill. Fuck, they’d surrounded him.
Dream immediately raised his iron sword and opened his inventory, grasping for the singular enderpearl he had acquired. Not nearly fast enough. George hits Dream’s shoulder, slashing across his bicep. He curses them for gathering full iron gear so fast. The advantage of having four sets of hands. Sapnap’s sword cuts into his side, cutting under his ribs. Dream grunts, gritting his teeth against the pain. He’s not going to win this.
It’s Ant who delivers the final blow, his sword cutting across Dream’s neck, causing blood to gush down over his front. Dream drops his sword to clasp his neck, desperate to stop the bleeding. It’s fruitless when he falls to the ground, vision blackening with blood loss. He dies seconds after he hits the ground.
