Chloe couldn't believe it when her lieutenant told them that she and Lucifer had to infiltrate a neighborhood as a newly married couple. It was what she least wanted to do, especially after the latest events with him; telling him that she was terrified and that she didn't know if she could come to accept him and that he was dating Eva. Despite the fact that this had happened a few weeks ago and that they were working together again, the relationship between them had never been the same.
"Tell us more details about this operation, Lieutenant," he said intrigued.
"You will have to fake this cover for a couple of days, maximum a week. I don't think it will cost you much to find the killer, since you have the maximum percentage of case resolution and that is why I am sending you both on this covert mission. Our agents are already working on it, so in a couple of hours they will provide you with everything you need for the operation"
Lucifer and Chloe listened carefully to all the details of the case and what they had to do before leaving the lieutenant's office.
"Are you comfortable with this?" Chloe asked a little unsure.
"Yes, why not detective? It can be fun doing something other than solving everyday cases" he answered, taking his flask out of his pocket.
"Will Eva agree with you being absent for days?"
"Eva will be fine, she also has become very close friends with Maze, she will be entertained in my absence" he replied with a smile" I'm going home to pack, see you this afternoon detective.
Chloe went home to do the same. She packed everything she needed into a large suitcase and mentally prepared herself for what might happen. She told herself that it was just work and that she should keep her feelings for Lucifer at bay, even though it was difficult in the end. Once she was ready, she said goodbye to her daughter and Dan, who met at her house to pick up Trixie and she headed to the police station.
Once there she found Lucifer talking to some agents. He had come before her, something he didn't do often. The agents in charge of the case gave them the necessary materials and the reports of the neighbors. Once they had it all, they drove to their new home in Lucifer's Corvette. Upon arrival, Chloe was in awe of the house; it was a large two-story house with a garden and a small swimming pool. The living room had large glass windows and long curtains at the sides to allow them to be drawn and gain privacy. In addition to the living room, on the ground floor was the kitchen, the pantry and a bathroom. On the upper floor there was another bathroom, a double room with a bathroom included and a guest room.
"I'll keep the guest room" Lucifer said grabbing his suitcase "you keep the big one"
"You're sure?" She asked.
"Absolutely" he replied with a smile as he opened the door to her room.
Chloe watched him come in and started to go into her new room. It was spacious, larger than the one in her own house, and the bathroom was complete, it had a bathtub as well as a shower. The bed, in the center of the room, was excessively large and she thought she and Lucifer could sleep together and not even touch each other during the night. She was taking her clothes out of the suitcase and putting them in the closet when a knock knock sounded on the door. Instantly Lucifer's head popped out.
"I can pass?"
"Of course Lucifer"
"Woof!" Lucifer exclaimed when he saw the interior "this room is huge and what a bed"
"It's too big, don't you think?" She asked him, dropping the evidence.
"Yes it is, but you can have it all to yourself," he replied with a smile.
After a while discussing the rooms in the house, Chloe pulled out the reports to read carefully. She handed a few to Lucifer and they got to it. A couple of hours later, the doorbell rang.
"Hello!" A couple said in unison after opening the door.
"Hello!" Chloe answered when she saw them.
"We are your next door neighbors, I am Martha and he is Lucas" the girl commented with a wide smile.
"I'm Chloe and..."
Before finishing the sentence, Lucifer appeared next to her, putting an arm around her waist and pulling her towards his body.
"And I am Lucifer, her husband" he said with his typical charming smile.
The couple looked at him in surprise and nodded. Martha began to look at him with desire, up and down, at Chloe's watchful look of disgust. Although she knew it was all a lie, she couldn't bear to have others look at him that way.
"Well welcome to the neighborhood" said Lucas breaking the silence "since you are new you deserve a good welcome. We will have a party tomorrow night to introduce you to the other neighbors"
"Oh! No need" Chloe replied "I mean, we should throw the party ourselves since we are the new ones.
"Nonsense" answered Martha "we love parties and whenever we have had new neighbors, we have made one in their honor. It is already a tradition"
"In that case we will be happy to go" added Lucifer smiling.
As soon as the neighbors left, Chloe grabbed the report and jotted down some details about Martha and Lucas, while Lucifer prepared dinner. They both ate quietly and exchanged impressions about the neighbors they had met. When they finished, Chloe offered to do the dishes, but Lucifer stopped her, so she went to sit on the couch. When finished, Lucifer joined her.
"Detective, I wanted to tell you something"
"What is it about?" she asked intrigued.
"If we are going to pretend to be a couple we should be comfortable with each other" he said making a little pause "before when I grabbed you by the waist, you tensed"
"I'm sorry Lucifer" she replied shyly "you caught me by surprise"
"I know you are not entirely comfortable with me, so I will touch you as little as possible, detective."
"No, that's not" she tried to apologize.
"You don't need to explain it to me, I understand. I mean, at first I took it very badly, but now I understand that you don't accept me for who I am, I've never done it with myself" he said, getting up from the couch "so you can be calm detective"
Chloe tried to speak to stop him and tell him that things were not like that, that she had already accepted who he was, but she just watched him climb the stairs to the top floor. She was not prepared to have that conversation.
