Beauty

Summary:

Who defines what beauty is or where it comes from, and what does it even mean?

Working in an industry that is hardly about anything else, and being the father of a gorgeous little girl, Taehyung always thought he must have a clear view on that issue. You, on the other hand, lost sight of the sheer concept of beauty a long time ago.

But maybe you both have no idea after all.

And perhaps the beauty of life itself will teach you the true meaning behind it.

Chapter 1: Prologue

Chapter Text

April 05, 2013

“___, you’re such a coward! “ Jimin called up to you laughing, while you were still clinging on to the fence post and wondering if you should really do it.
Was it a good idea to sneak into Mr. Lee’s backyard even though everyone knew he was crazy and liked to kill people when he caught them doing it? Well, probably not but Jimin being Jimin, thought he knew better and talked you into it — as he always did.

And that’s how you ended up here.

"Come onnn! I know it was my idea to sneak in here but I sure as hell do not want to spend the night in this creepy ass backyard, ___!“ He groaned, jumping nervously up and down while rolling his eyes in your direction.

"Will you please finally shut your mouth and stop yelling, Jimin? What if Mr. Lee hears you?“ You whisper-yelled, nervously looking around.

"Don’t tell me you believe those stupid rumors about him killing people. I know he’s mean, doesn’t know how to smile or laugh, and probably never took a shower in all those hundreds of years he’s been alive but that doesn’t mean he’s a murderer.“ He smirked and reached his hand out to help you down. You hesitantly took it, not liking the weird feeling appearing in your stomach, as soon as your feet touched the ground.

"He’d long be in prison if that was the case.“ Probably sensing your discomfort he took your hand in his, gave your knuckles a soft kiss, and smiled at you. Not just any smile. It was that 1000 dollar Jimin smile that makes everybody instantly fall to his feet. It made you feel at least a little better and you even got yourself to put an unsure smile on your lips.

There were a lot of rumors surrounding Mr. Lee — none of them have ever been confirmed of course — and you believed that most of these rumors simply existed because people are assholes. They always need something, if not someone, to talk about and in this case, it seemed to be the weird, old man who was always sticking to himself, rarely left his house, and never liked talking to anyone.

The backyard itself wasn’t even special or unordinary. It was the aura surrounding it, that gave you the chills.

"I know those rumors aren’t true, Jimin. I just don’t want to be here.“ You murmured, staring at a dark wooden shed just a few meters away from Jimin and you. Something wasn’t right about it… Something just wasn’t right. Glancing at the old farmhouse at the end of the fence, you saw the lights were still out and everything seemed to be okay. Nobody seemed to be awake at least.

"Then what are you afraid of?“ He intertwined your fingers, pulling you forward. "I’m with you. I won’t let him take you, babe.“ You groaned quietly, still afraid that Mr. Lee would hear you both being on his property.

"What exactly is the reason for us to be here, Chim?“ You quietly asked, while pushing yourself closer to his back. "I mean, I don’t want to spoil the game or anything but what are we getting out of this?“

Jimin chuckled, turning around and looking into your eyes. "Just trying to make memories ___. Live a little will ya?“

Now you were the one who couldn’t hide a small laugh. "Trying to make memories? Of what, Jimin? We’re literally wandering around a crazy man’s garden. I mean there’s not even anything here!“ You giggled.

You really didn’t get it. If it was literally any other place, walking around at 1 in the morning with your boyfriend would be somewhat romantic but this just wasn’t it. Jimin shrugged, going further. "Who knows? Maybe we’ll find the bodies of all those who came before us.“ He wiggled his eyebrows and made some weird hand gestures, making you roll your eyes.

You knew he was joking. But somehow you didn’t feel the need to laugh. Maybe because you were suddenly reminded of where you were and what you were doing. Even if Mr. Lee wasn’t a murderer, which — let’s be real — he probably wasn’t, you were still committing a crime by trespassing onto his property.

"You’re such an idiot.“ You mumbled, not very impressed.

"But you love me anyway.“ He winked.

"I might change my mind about that when we’re back home.“ You threatened jokingly.

He once again started to turn around. "You know, it’s hard to believe you when you say that nowadays because you always—" he suddenly stopped talking, eyes fixed on something behind you, going wide as he completely froze in his spot.

"Chim?“ Confused about his sudden change in behavior, you tried to check what was behind you but Jimin stopped your head from turning far enough.

"___, I want you to slowly start walking back to the fence as soon as I count to three, okay?“ He lowly whispered to you.

You started to get nervous and him not telling you what was suddenly wrong, didn’t help at all.

"Jimin what—"

"___, please just listen, okay?“ He interrupted you, getting hectic all of a sudden. “I will count to three and you will slowly walk to the fence and climb up.“ He seemed very on edge and eager for you to move already but you had different plans.

He always did stuff like that. Making fun of you for being too much of a scaredy-cat or not outgoing enough, trying to scare you when you were already on the verge of running away. He never did it in a mean way of course. It was just your boyfriend being a little shit whenever he got the chance to and even if it got annoying at times, you learned to love even that side of him.

He knew exactly how to get on your nerves and how to push your buttons the right way. You usually fell for it or played along but not this time. It was late, you were tired and you really really wanted to not be there.

"Chim, if you think you can scare me, it’s not going to happen.“ Letting go of his hand, you crossed your arms and moved slightly away from him. "I’m honestly not up for your shit tonight, just stop.“ The unimpressed look on your face and your cool facade was suddenly washed away as you heard a low growling very close behind you.

The nape of your neck was littered with goosebumps as you looked into your boyfriend's eyes, who himself looked downright frightened. You had never seen this look on Jimin. In the three years you’d known each other, two of them as a couple, you’d never seen this look of sheer terror on his face. And for someone who was constantly finding himself in some sort of trouble, that must mean something.

You finally turned around, almost wishing you hadn’t when you suddenly saw what Jimin had been staring at all along. A huge black German Shepherd was standing only a few meters away from you, baring his teeth in an alarming body position as if he was about to attack.

"Jimin?“ You barely whimpered with fear.

"Shhh, ___ just — stay still. Try not to make sudden movements or something.“ You noticed Jimin trying to stay calm for your sake, yet the tone in his voice deceived him. "Please just do what I asked of you and start walking to the fence.“ He whispered close behind you.

Trying to gather all your courage, you slowly attempted to move forward, however, as soon as you lift your foot up that huge beast in front of you was already running in your direction. You felt like a deer caught in headlights, unable to move until you were suddenly dragged out of your spot as Jimin pulled you away.

You were both running as fast as you could, heart rate spiking, "Jimin, it’s close!“ You screamed, after sneaking a look behind you.

"Don’t look back just run, ___!“ Your boyfriend was picking up the speed if that was even possible.

Even if it felt like hours and your lungs were already burning, you finally reached the spot you came from. Now there was only the hardest part left to do; you had to make it over the fence somehow. While Jimin, athletic as he was, jumped up the fence with ease, pushed himself up, and finally swung his body gallantly to the other side, you stood in front of it as if rooted to the spot. When you arrived it took you forever to climb those giant, old wooden posts. How on earth were you going to make it now in a matter of seconds while a bloodthirsty beast was hot on your heels?

Well, long story short — you could’t.

Your eyes went wide when the last thing you heard was Jimin frantically screaming your name before you were pushed to the ground.

October 03, 2016

Taehyung sighed deeply, looking out of the window and into the night sky as he was listening to the steady breaths of his daughter, who was sleeping peacefully in her tiny crib.

She was without a doubt the most amazing, precious thing in his life. Just two months into being a father, he couldn’t imagine his life without her even just for a minute. What the hell did he do before he had her? He simply couldn’t remember and he sure as hell didn’t want to.

His gaze swayed down to her tiny face, taking in all of the little details one could notice about her. She had his nose. Altogether Hyejin looked just like her mother but Taehyung was proud that she had at least his nose. He smiled to himself as he looked at her.

Such a perfect little princess. His little princess.

A sad smile came over his face as he noticed more and more of Hyejin’s facial features that reminded him of his wife.

Jisoo was… She was a touchy subject to him. He didn’t really know when it began but he certainly didn’t enjoy thinking about her as much anymore.

Taehyung didn’t even know where she was most of the time. Hell, he didn’t even know where his wife was right now! Furrowing his brows together, he took a quick look at his phone, checking, if Jisoo had sent him a text. It was no surprise that she hadn’t but it still irritated him to no end.

Their daughter was two months old for heaven's sake and he could count the times his wife had brought her to bed, or even hold her for more than a few minutes before immediately turning her back to him on one hand.

He wished everything in his life could be as perfect as the little angel, sleeping soundly in her bed but that was sadly not the truth. A lot of things in his life were anything but perfect — Obviously starting with his marriage…

He just couldn’t understand.

It wasn’t Hyejin’s fault. It wasn’t her fault that her parents are a bunch of idiots who tend to forget about responsibility once they’ve had a few too many glasses of wine.

She may not have been planned but she was most definitely not anything he could ever regret. At least that was his way of looking at the situation they got themselves into. His wife, however, seemed to see it in a different way.
Not that their problems only just started after Hyejin was born. No, Taehyung and Jisoo hadn’t been intimate with each other for months until the night that led to Hyejin, and even then it was all just a huge coincident. They both just happened to be inside their shared home at the same time, drank a little too much, and lost themselves in old memories and feelings. And that’s how it happened.

He clearly remembers the day Jisoo came running to him, make-up absolutely smeared and ruined from crying so hard. She had been completely devastated as she told him about the pregnancy test she took that came out positive.

Taehyung didn’t know what to feel when she told him. He was surprised, yes, shocked even. But was he sad? Did he feel the need to cry and sob as much as Jisoo did? No, not at all.

He had long known he wanted to become a dad someday. Jisoo and he hadn’t really talked about that before but he just assumed that she wanted it as well. His opinion on the subject was clear and he never made a secret out of his wish to have children someday. Why would she have married him, if he had different plans all along, right?

Sure, at 21 they were still young but they weren’t too young to be parents and they were already married anyway. Wasn’t that just the next step?

Marrying at just 19 may have been quite risky but at that time it just felt like the right thing to do. Taehyung knew he loved her and she loved him just as much, at least he thought she did. But now, just two years into their marriage it seemed as if their flame was about to go out already.

Jisoo never said anything about it but Taehyung knew. He just knew she wasn’t into it — wasn’t into him anymore. She wasn’t into their marriage anymore. He would even go as far as saying she wasn’t into Hyejin. It wasn’t like he was reaching, she was never fucking here. She rarely ever saw their daughter, never asked about her and rarely ever showed any kind of affection. It was sad but it was the truth.

He sighed once again, tenderly stroking his daughter’s hair and even booping her nose lightly. He quietly laughed as she scrunched her face together, obviously not liking the way her father was disturbing her sleep.

With a final look at his sleeping daughter he eventually left the room, turning the lights off on his way out.

As he walked down the floor he once again took his phone into his hand about to send his wife a message, asking if she intended to come home that night.

Unsurprisingly, she didn’t answer and she also didn’t come home.
