Behind The Song

Summary:

I feel most inspired to write while listening to music. This collection of flash fiction pieces are all loosely (or not so loosely) based on different songs from various artists.

Each chapter note will contain the pairing, song title and artist.

Notes:

Song: Did You Call Me Last Night
Artist: Ben Laine
Pairing: Calex- Casey Novak & Alex Cabot

Chapter 1: Did You Call Me Last Night?

Chapter Text

It had been about 3 months since Alex called things off with Casey. Neither one of them wanted this, nor did they see the end coming. The thoughts of that conversation still haunted Casey. No matter how tired Casey was when she would go to lie down, these thoughts wouldn’t leave. They stayed there as if they were on a string, hanging in front of her face, just out of swatting distance. She lied there, in darkness, the only light in the room now coming from her vibrating cell phone.

“Alex Cabot” turns to “Missed Call- Alex Cabot”.

She hadn’t seen that name on her phone since the night Alex broke up with her. Casey’s heartbeat sped up like a car accelerating down a highway. She didn’t know that the sight of Alex’s name after all this time would make her eyes well up with tears.

“What was Alex doing when she called me?” Was she alone, like all the nights she would spend after a long day studying? Or was she out at a party with what used to be their friends? Did she want me to answer? Should I have answered? No, if she would have wanted to hear my voice, she would have made some sort of effort to actually come see me.

“What a loser” Casey thought to herself, “you’re over her.”

It had been three years since the break up. Casey was finally better able to sleep, but still wasn’t over Alex. She tried moving on, but her heart belongs to the blonde woman. This woman still occupied her whole mind, though she tried to shake her out of her head.

Casey swung her bat at the yellowish-green ball hurling toward her face. She missed. Her phone was ringing. Still the same ringtone she had set for Alex three years ago. The song was their song, one she avoided for three years.

“Alex Cabot” again turning to, “ Missed Call- Alex Cabot”.

Again, her heartbeat sped out of her chest, tears welling up in her eyes. It took everything in Casey to not pick up her phone and call the woman back. She wanted to do this so badly. The thought of Alex calling her by accident was the only thing keeping her from calling Alex back, even if all she heard was, “You’ve reached Alex Cabot. Leave a message”.

“You fucking loser.”
