Chapter Text
Jane was typing up some emails in her “room”--she figured she could call it that since Thor had invited her to stay here at his family's ever-so-big mansion/palace since she’d lost her apartment last week. She heard a heavy knock on the door, Thor. This time something didn’t feel right about the way he knocked or the way he looked at her when she beckoned him to come in. It wasn’t the sweet smile she was used to in the short time that they have been together, it carried an air of nervousness and maybe if she let the dark part of her mind in, sadness.
She got off her bed to greet him “What’s wrong Thor? Did someone put something in your coffee?” she smirked.
Thor chuckled, “No, no I assure you I found nothing in my coffee. Can we talk?”
Jane swallowed nervously at his tone. “Sure come and sit down.” She gestured him towards her desk chair, which made him look like a giant sitting in a child’s chair since Jane was much smaller than him.
“I wish to be honest with you, Jane. Being with you has made me better in many ways and I will forever cherish what we have.” Thor paused and looked at her with sadness. “But it has also made me realize the things that I took for granted, Sif being one of them.”
Jane’s heart ached, she could almost taste what he was going to say next and happy wasn’t an emotion she was going to feel for herself. “I’m in love with Sif and I wish to be with her.” In that moment she felt her heart shatter to pieces as her brain registered what he had said.
Jane wasn’t one to forgive instead of hate after someone had just said they don’t love her anymore, but at least the guy’s being honest with her about it. It was pretty obvious Thor was a good man, so she should be supportive about his decisions.
“Shoot your shots buddy, I'm sure Sif will feel the same way and you’ll make a great couple together!” She looked up at him and put a smile on, knowing very well from the deep cracks inside her heart that happiness was very far from what she was feeling.
Thor had a big smile on his face. “I thank you, Jane. You will always be a very dear friend of mine and you can stay here as long as you need. You will always be welcome.” Jane cringed internally, looking at her paycheck and her bills combined it seemed like she would be stuck here for a long while until she was able to afford a place of her own again. She didn’t want to depend on the Odinson family’s generosity, but without them she might as well have been living in her car since Erik had moved out of state only just recently and Darcy moved back in with her parents.
“Now, you go on to tell Sif and tell me what happens.” She led him to the door with a smile plastered on her face.
Thor grinned, “Have a great day Jane, I’ll surely come back to you with the news!”
Jane watched as the space between her door became smaller and smaller until she was sure he was gone. She released a choked sob as she let herself fall onto her bed, her mind wandering to how all this came to be. She remembered how James, the guy at the lab, had set her up on a date in front of everyone and she spilled her coffee on him for interrupting her work, and then how her and Thor had gotten on so well at the bar. She let out a soft sob at the painful memory. Images from how she lost her apartment and Thor kindly letting her stay here to the first kiss they’d shared together. They all came together as one big knife that stabbed her right in the chest.
Her and Thor had only shared a kiss together in the sad month that they were together. Thor was always too busy with his friends and Jane spent most of her time in her small corner of the lab at Odinson Industries trying to get one step close to figuring out how the black holes in space worked. She was always so close to finding out how it worked, but someone always had to disturb her. Here she was, face down on--not to mention--one of the softest beds she had ever felt, worrying about trying to keep her job. They could always just replace her, she was, after all, one of many low security scientists at Odinson Industries. Ok Jane, be strong about this. Stop worrying about your job or your lack of apartment or the fact that you now have a front row seat to watch Thor and Sif start their budding romance. Her inner voice coming from the good side of her brain was right, she needed to put her big girl pants on for this and suck it up until she made it better.
Somehow, Jane managed to get out of bed again and let the curious scientist get the better of her mind. She reached for her good pair of jeans and a flannel and put it on her quickly, rushing out into the hall to explore the big place. She started on her floor and was quickly fascinated with all the expensive paintings that must have cost a fortune. This floor was mainly empty bedrooms that she presumed were guest rooms but looked more like huge apartments with ridiculously large bathrooms, closets, living rooms and mini kitchens. Jane turned right to the next hall and was surprised with the elegance of it. She noticed that it was much darker in this hallway and the color scheme was different, while the other hallway was light blue and gold with chandeliers, this one had dark green walls with black trim and black chandeliers. She also noticed that there were way less doors in this hallway than the ones she’d seen before. Her eyes landed on one door on the end of the hallway; it seemed dusty and unopened. Before she could think of going back she headed over to it and opened the door.
Her eyes widened at all the bookshelves, there were so many books. They covered the walls from floor to ceiling. She spotted everything from mystery novels to every kind of physics textbook that was out there. Her head turned to the rest of the room, spotting a large black bed fit for royalty and dark green walls with black trim just like the hallway through the darkness.
She heard a cough behind her. “Please, do tell me what you are doing in my room?” She jumped in shock and turned around. Jane was screaming internally, there was Loki Odinson, CEO of Odinson Industries, shirtless right before her. This man was her boss, no, he was the boss of her boss, no he was the boss of her boss’s boss. He was the one who ran it all. What is he doing here of all places?!!! Her inner voice was screaming.
She glared at him, “Please do tell me what you’re doing here.” He looked down at her with a smirk. “So feisty, I like you.”
She rolled her eyes, “That isn’t answering my question asshole.” Jerk. Jane had only seen him from afar when he did his yearly location checkups, and even then he seemed pretty intimidating, not to mention he was known to be practically married to his job, but so are you.
He raised an eyebrow, “You didn’t answer mine.” She clenched her teeth in anger, she felt a headache coming on and this was one of those moments where she wished she had an Advil for every time someone was being an annoying jerk to her.
She looked up at him, trying not to look anywhere else, but her eyes failed her when they quickly swept down his toned chest, her face lighty turning a nice shade of red “I was exploring.”
She felt him tilt her chin back up so that she was looking up at him again, the feeling of his fingers making a shiver go down her spine, “Has it ever crossed your mind during one date of yours with Thor for you to ask my brother if he had any siblings?” He growled, glaring at her.
Her eyes widened, brother? Her mind came to a revelation; her and Thor had only gone out on one date, so she’d passed the question off for next time and just assumed that he was the only child since he seemed like one. She’d pushed the fact that she knew someone that had the same last name to the back of her brain since it could be common in a different country. Her eyes swept over his features, trying to find one similar feature that they shared but she found none. It even seemed as if their personalities were the complete opposite too. “I never got the time to ask him that and he seemed like the type that was an only child so I just assumed so.” She cringed, he may be the biggest asshole she’s talked to but that just seemed so unfair, even for her that was a low blow.
He chuckled darkly at the look on her face, “Oh dear everyone always forgets about little Loki.” He said bitterly. She suddenly felt pity for him. He’s a total ass, her inner voice said and she knew she shouldn’t feel bad, but she couldn’t help it, it was no wonder why he’s such a jerk.
“Do tell my brother that I say hello,” he mocked.
She glared at him, “We broke up two hours ago.” She grumbled, she wouldn’t let him know they were still friends, she wouldn’t give him the satisfaction of having that tiny piece of information.
His mouth made an ooh sound “It’s a wonder why you’re still here.” That’s it, she clenched her palms in anger and made her way back outside in the hallway. She stormed back to her room, as much as she wanted to explore more she was far too angry for this. She felt as if he set a ticking bomb inside her ready to explode at any moment. As she moved closer to her room she didn’t notice a dark figure following her trail in the shadows.
“Everyone always forgets about little Loki.” That was her last thought in her mind before falling dead asleep in her bed.
