Work Text:
I walk on stage with the rest of the band, everyone getting into their spots and causing the crowd to scream out. It’s my turn to start.
“I like you girl, but you don't seem excited
Since she walked in where has your mind been?
You talking to me, but thinking of her
Your secret is safe, I won't say a word”
It’s a semi-tame song, different from the ones Bakugou or Mina write. Though, I liked it and even asked permission from Jirou before showing it to the band or releasing it as a single.
“We should slow down, I was moving too quick
You don't say you love me, just bite your lip
I can read the signals from a mile away
I know she is on your mind and that's okay”
It’s about Jirou and how she likes girls. I hadn’t found out until just before she’d wanted to ask Momo out, I just thought she wasn’t interested in any of my pick up lines or flirting - though, most aren’t so it didn’t strike me as anything out of the ordinary.
“I think she likes girls
Every time she flaunts
You wanna get real and tell me
What you want
I think she likes girls
I think she likes girls”
She’d always looked at Momo more than anyone else, but doesn’t everyone look at their friends more than the annoying disaster I am? How was I supposed to know she had a thing for girls if she didn’t come out and tell me straight up? I thought everyone knew I wasn’t the brightest of our friends.
“I think she likes girls
I can't make her stop
She wants to kiss on lips but she's scared to get caught
I think she likes girls
I think she likes girls
She likes girls, girls, girls
She likes girls, girls, girls
She likes girls, girls, girls
I think she likes girls”
Jirou was surprisingly super supportive about the song when I’d first shown her, singing it along with me and helping me smooth out the rough edges. She’d even brought out her guitar and we picked out the chords to go along with the lyrics. She only laughed at me a little when I told her I’d just found out too.
“If you craving her body you shouldn't hide it
You told her the truth the flame was ignited
Lost in the night you touching her skin
Leaving the club, the kissing begin”
It was thanks to that moment that Jirou was able to write her own song about Momo, though I don’t know if she ever showed her what it was. They’re dating now, I would think so. But how many times was I ever right about anything?
“We should slow down, I was moving too quick
You don't say you love me, just bite your lip
I can read the signals from the mile away
I know she is on your mind and that's okay”
Jirou was also there when I first told everyone about my own sexuality - when I came out as bisexual to the Bakusquad plus Jirou and Shinsou. And she was the one who helped me gather the courage to eventually tell the entire class. It was an anxious day, that’s for sure.
“I think she likes girls
Every time she flaunts
You wanna get real ’n’ tell me what you want
I think she likes girls
I think she likes girls”
The crowd gets louder as the song goes on, getting used to the sights and sounds of the concert. They sing and dance along, many holding up their pride flags and sending warm spirals of euphoria through my body at the sight. Did you know how many letters we received about people coming out and finally accepting themselves after releasing this song?
“I think she likes girls
I can't make her stop
She wants to kiss on lips but she's scared to get caught
I think she likes girls
I think she likes girls”
“She likes girls, girls, girls
She likes girls, girls, girls
She likes girls, girls, girls
I think she likes girls”
Phones are brought out, videos and pictures capturing what they can of the moment. I wonder if they’ll plague their Snapchat stories with endless videos of our concert or if they’ll keep them secret to enjoy by themselves.
“Feeling lonely, feeling in
She met her on the dance floor
She knew she had to have more
She's feeling faded, it's not pretend
She met her on the dance floor
She knew she had to have more”
This was Jirou’s favorite two verses. She had them stuck in her head forever after we went over the song. I had to keep bugging her about singing it out loud, I didn’t want her spoiling it for anyone before I could finish and show it to the others.
“Feeling lonely, feeling in
She met her on the dance floor
She knew she had to have more
She's feeling faded, it's not pretend
She met her on the dance floor
She knew she had to have more”
A flag is thrown on stage near my feet and I go to pick it up, dropping down to the height of many fans and handing the microphone off to a girl near my feet. She jumps up and catches my hand before I let go and make for the flag, smiling wider than should be possible.
“I think she likes girls
Every time she flaunts
You wanna get real ’n’ tell me what you want
I think she likes girls
I think she likes girls”
She starts off quiet, but progressively gets more upbeat and confident with it. She also draws out notes where I usually don’t and adds a more deep feeling to the song.
“I think she likes girls
I can't make her stop
She wants to kiss on lips but she's scared to get caught
I think she likes girls
I think she likes girls”
She hands it back excitedly when I smile at her and reach for the microphone, jumping up and down and shouting to her friend next to her. I give her a small wink as I go to finish the rest of the song, walking back to my original place with the flag slung around my shoulders.
“I think she likes girls
Every time she flaunts
You wanna get real ’n’ tell me what you want
I think she likes girls
I think she likes girls”
Seeing everyone so happy and hearing all the positive things this song has brought to the amazing people that truly needed to hear it, it warms my heart and I finish the song better than ever before in my opinion. I want Jirou to know how much her friendship means to me in this small moment in time.
“I think she likes girls
I can't make her stop
She wants to kiss on lips but she's scared to get caught
I think she likes girls
I think she likes girls
She likes girls, girls, girls
She likes girls, girls, girls
She likes girls, girls, girls
I think she likes girls”
Before this song, I had no idea. But now, I know she likes girls - almost as much as I like cheesy pick up lines.
