Work Text:
Gyro was probably the biggest dork that Johnny ever had the pleasure of meeting.
They had spent a few months together, just as friends, and they’d seen each other though so much and learnt so much about each other that it seemed only natural to take a step towards a deeper relationship. But while Johnny antagonised over how exactly to ask Gyro to be his boyfriend, Gyro beat him to the punch.
They were in the park, taking a leisurely walk at the time. It was the same park they’d met, Gyro tripping over his own feet while chasing his friend Pocoloco and falling right into Johnny, taking him down, wheelchair and all. They walked around the pond, through the path that was shaded by trees, and came to a stop at the park entrance. The sun was beginning to set and that marked the end of their day out together.
“Thanks for taking me out today, Gyro.” Johnny said, smiling up at Gyro, ready to make his way home.
“No problem! Anyway, I had something to give you, so…” He dug around in his pocket a little and with a laugh he pulled out a piece of folded up paper and a pen. He handed both to Johnny with a suspicious grin that made the boy take them with extreme caution. “I will accept your answer now or through the post.”
“Who even uses the post anymore?” Johnny scoffed and unfolded the piece of paper.
Johnny Joestar,
Will you go out with me? (Please tick one, or all)
□ Yes
□ Definitely
□ Absolutely
Gyro Zeppeli.
Johnny blinked down at the piece of paper, then up at Gyro, then back at the paper. He couldn’t help but start laughing, bending over in a fit of giggles. He dropped the pen and letter in his lap and reached his arms out in a grabby motion, trying to hold onto Gyro’s hands. Gyro took a step forward and held on to the laughing boy’s hands, then he was pulled down, so he was kneeling in front of Johnny.
“Yes, I’ll definitely go out with you.” Johnny said between breaths of laughter.
“Absolutely?”
“Absolutely!” The two of them couldn’t stop smiling as they leaned in for a chaste kiss, a short peck on the lips, nothing more.
They both went home with joy in their hearts and a lightness to their bodies.
His palms were sweating, and his shoulders ached from being tense for so long.
Johnny took a few deep breaths as he looked at himself in the mirror, psyching himself up. It was just another date! They’d done this hundreds of times before! Of course, those hundreds of times didn’t also include a proposal while happening to fall on the same day as their 3-year anniversary, but that didn’t matter; it was just him and Gyro together.
He was definitely scared of asking the question, despite knowing that the older man would very likely say yes, yet that small uncertainty was making him shake with anxiety. He had spent such a long time planning everything out, making sure it would happen perfectly – he’d even employed the help of Hot Pants and Diego! – just so the special moment would go off without a single hitch. A few more deep breaths and himself slapping his own cheeks and he deemed himself ready.
He made his way outside, spotting Gyro leaning against his car on his phone. He called out his name and when he looked up he couldn’t help but smile. There he was. The love of his life who he was going to be tied to for the rest of his life (hopefully).
Diego had joked that Johnny was tying Gyro down but made the very clear distinction that he wasn’t tying him down but tying them together. They would be together, helping each other through everything and having each other’s backs, through the hard times and the good times. Sink or swim. Which Diego then joked made sense since Johnny would only ever sink seeing as he couldn’t swim. Hot Pants hit him round the head for the comment.
“You ready?” Gyro had asked him as they got into the car.
“Ready as I’ll ever be.”
They shared a meal at the Vietnamese restaurant that Gyro had taken Johnny to on their first date after asking him out, Johnny making sure they got the same seating as that time and a photo to commemorate the moment. He wanted to remember this day, even if it didn’t end the way he hoped.
Next, they made their way to the ice cream stand in the park that they had almost toppled over the day they met. They got a singular cone and shared it, Gyro licking a smear of the sweet treat off of Johnny’s nose when he almost dropped it.
Last stop.
They made their way to the gate at the entrance of the park, just as the sun was setting.
“Brings back memories, doesn’t it?” Johnny asked holding tight onto Gyro’s hand as they watched the sun dip below the horizon. He sighed at the sight, remembering the countless number of times they had returned to the very same place just to reminisce.
“It’s almost as beautiful as you.” Gyro squeezed Johnny’s hand, making him let out a snort of laughter.
“You’re a walking cliché.”
“And you love me.”
“Yeah… I do love you.” Johnny gulped and let go of Gyro’s hand. When he looked down at him he inhaled and bit his bottom lip. “I have something for you.” He said, getting a piece of paper out of the pocket of his hoodie, handing it to Gyro who raised an eyebrow at the strange gesture.
“A piece of paper? You better not have decided to be tired of be and gotten a restraining order.” He chuckled, unfolding the piece of paper.
My Dearest, Gyro Zeppeli,
Will you marry me? (Please tick one, or all)
□ Yes
□ Definitely
□ Absolutely
Johnny Joestar.
Gyro looked down at Johnny with tears in his eyes.
“I can’t get down on one knee, but I thought, maybe I don’t have to?” Johnny held out a pen to Gyro but instead of taking it, Gyro swept Johnny up into his arms and peppered his face with kisses.
“Yes! Definitely! Absolutely!” Gyro laughed, holding his Johnny close to him, not even bothering to hold back the tears. He’d never expected to be proposed to, especially not in the same dorky way he’d asked Johnny out in, but he couldn’t have ever asked for a more perfect way for it to have happened. It had a sweet sort of parallelism that was like something right out of a story book.
“You really mean it?” Johnny whispered, not trusting his voice to be raised any more in fear of nothing coming out.
“Of course, gattino, I love you so much, or course I want to marry you!” Johnny let out the breath he’d been holding with a goofy smile as he held Gyro’s face between his hands and kissed him. Hot Pants and Diego jumped out from a nearby bush, bursting party poppers and showering the two of them in confetti and glitter. Gyro and Johnny held each other close, kissing with tears running down their cheeks as the little pieces of tissue paper fell around them.
Johnny felt that maybe, just maybe, it was the best luck of his life to have Gyro literally make him fall head over heels for him when they met.
