Chapter Text

Stark Mansion, January 1st, 2014.

"Happy 2014!"

Among their friends, coworkers, and complete strangers, Steve and Natasha kissed each other, saluting the future ahead of them.

"Love you," they both whispered, the words carrying more weight than ever before. A second kiss followed — quieter yet deliberate — a declaration that they were done hiding.

For a brief moment, they were just another couple, lost in each other among the cheering crowd. However, the instant they were recognized as Avengers, they became the center of attention, surrounded by curious eyes and whispered gossip. It didn't matter anymore.

Hand in hand, they chose to be seen, stepping into the light without hesitation. Happy to be together, the Soldier and the Spy danced as if the ballroom belonged to them alone, the world around them fading into insignificance.

As the night progressed, fellow Avengers and others began to join in. First came Thor, twirling Jane and laughing, followed by Clint and Bobbi, their exuberance infectious. Coulson and May glided onto the dance floor like seasoned professionals, with Sam and Darcy close behind, turning heads as the sexy sight. Another hot combination, Ward and Skye, pulled the shy Fitz and Simmons onto the dance floor, their laughter blending effortlessly with the music. Finally, Tony and Pepper arrived in style, accompanied by waiters bearing glasses of champagne for everyone. As the hall emptied, even Bruce and Betty approached timidly, exchanging smiles.

The New Year promised hopes and dreams, yet challenges would always follow for the Tower's remarkable residents. Hawkeye's impulsive marriage last November subtly shifted the dynamic among both the Avengers and the many others who called the Tower home, prompting everyone to reflect on their personal lives and future aspirations. With hearts full and eyes set on the horizon, they pondered a common yet profound question…

What do I want from life?

REFERENCES:

The characters backgrounds are a combination of the MCU movies and TV shows (Agents of SHIELD & Agent Carter), with the addition of Marvel Comics (Main Universe aka Earth-616, & Ultimates) and Marvel Cartoons (Avengers' Earth Mightiest Heroes & Avengers Assemble).

My Betty Ross is portrayed by Jennifer Connelly, from her role in Hulk (2003). I began writing this series in 2013, before Anthony Mackie was cast as Samuel Wilson. Therefore, my version of Falcon is based on the Avengers Assemble cartoon, but I depict him as a young adult (21) rather than the cartoon's teenage counterpart (17).
