Slow-burn with both Halsin & Astarion and Tav & Astarion content in a healthy way. Lots of angst, so much comfort your teeth will hurt and a whole lot of healing.

“What happened?”
“The wizard’s magic exploded.” Lae-zel shifted her weight, still watching the vampire and arch-druid worriedly. “Astarion?”
Astarion shook his head despairingly, tears choking the words from his throat.
“I’m so sorry.” Gale came near hesitantly. “It… the spell deflected like there was nothing there to bring back. I… I don’t know what else to try. I’m sorry, Astarion. I’m so sorry.”
Astarion sobbed miserably, clutching Halsin’s head closer and pressing his cold lips to the still-warm forehead. He had no words, no ideas, no plans. No concept of what to do now or where to go next.
Behind him, Karlach gasped breathlessly, the tiniest sound of hope.

Astarion's swirling thoughts were interrupted abruptly as they passed through a gate; they had moved into a shadier part of the market and his escort's grip had tightened less-than-protectively on his arm. Shit.
The vampire's eyes searched his face, a cold chill of fear running through him at what he found. Dumb though he was, the man knew something.
“I think your master would be very interested in knowing where his favorite slave is.”
