Local stereotypical, misunderstood, well meaning jock Alex is riddled with epiphanies. About his childhood, about his lifelong dream of going pro, about the lack of passtimes he actually had the ability to find himself in, primarily due to his now absent father's ill intended cajoling. In the aftermath of an obligatory school project and an inadvertently insightful insult, Alex finds himself on a mission with Pelican Town’s social recluse to try and unravel some of these epiphanies. Quick witted and unapologetic, Alex discovers more things under the wing of Sebastian than just a new passion, and maybe, Sebastian does too.
Local stereotypical, prom queen, fashionista, mean girl Haley is tired of being bored, uninspired, and depressed. A highly regarded nationwide media competition has been served to her on a silver platter by her high school art teacher. Alongside one other girl. Purple haired, annoyingly talented, and unfailingly creative and unique, Abigail is just the kind of winner Ferngill Art Association is looking for. But to Haley's surprise, knocks at her door and asks for help. Maybe Abigail's what she needed to discover what the competitions theme, 'community' really means, by her own definition.

Haley struggles with the mundane domesticity of Pelican Town. Her failing photography career, her dull situationship with Alex, and her ever present dysfunctional relationship with her sister Emily and the rest of her family, all blur together in one nihilistic lump.
Haley needs some colour, could her emerging friendship with another resident of Pelican Town connect her with one of the most colourful girls in town? And can she stamp out the feelings that come with every sensible compliment, every blunt observation, and every soft touch?Sam has carefully eradicated every mildly romantic thought he's ever had about his best friend since they started. Now, freshly 18 he thought he was squeaky clean. But with the return of his father, Kent, he is awash with old emotions. Like how he hates the way everything they eat is infused with hazelnuts, or his sense of adventure, sneaking out was much more threatening with his father, or like the lingering glances, the lovesick sighs, the too long touches when handing over the console controller.
Most of all, the jealousy, when the lovelier blond of Pelican Town seems to be all over him. And vice versa.
