“You loved me?” Wednesday asked, her voice soft and hopeful. Enid wanted to cry at the emotion pouring out of the usually stoic goth girl.
“I still do,” she whispered. Wednesday’s breath hitched in her throat as she swallowed, trying to hold back the tears that she would have never dared let Enid see when they were younger.

Wednesday disappears after graduation, leaving behind a heartbroken Enid. It wasn't until she read Wednesday’s autobiography 5 years later that Enid discovered the real reason for her departure.

Summary
Wednesday doesn’t fully grasp how she has found herself in this position. One moment she is by her desk, angling her body in the chair to retrieve a fresh stack of papers for her typewriter, the other she is on the floor. The fallen chair by her side and with spikes of pain going through her left shoulder and lower abdomen. Trembling. Gasping for air.
Yes, she certainly was lucky nobody could see this dreadful display of weakness.
