"This is all very unlike you," Severus mumbled.
Albus sighed. "Yes. I seem to be in a slump. A very comfortable slump."
Severus clutched his own knees, eyes on the carpet, tracing patterns in the lush fabric. Snappishly, he asked, "What is it you really want? What makes you hesitate to leave if you're not happy?"
"Have I ever been?"
That made Severus pause. "Happy?"
"Happy."
Severus had never deeply considered Albus's happiness. Much like his own, it had been inconsequential for many years, at the bottom of his priorities. He had implicitly understood it was the same for Albus.
