Summary
You like the life you've built for yourself in Vienna, you've worked hard for it and you've got plenty to show for it: you're rising through the ranks at a respectable clip and with god as your witness if you don't take first chair in the Opera by the time you're forty it'll only be because you've graduated to the Philharmonic instead. Music is your life's work, and you love it, love the act of pulling art out of thin air, temporary and ephemeral. But it's still work, both the dedication to the craft and the endless social acrobatics of kissing the right ass at the right time to always stay one step ahead of your lazier, less devoted colleagues, and it wears on the bones. Vienna is great, but it's not Sweden at your mother's for Christmas and it's not Italy with Alberto in summer.
Maybe it could be, though, if you gave it a chance.

Summary
He still won't look at you, but he comes close. His eyes focus, but when he tries to let them meet yours, they slide off the other side of your face. His throat works hard with the effort to find words, and produces nothing.
But his hand leaves yours and re-anchors itself on the side of your face, his thumb tracing over your cheek, pushing stands of wet hair behind your ear. You can see his blunt claw pass through your field of vision from the corner of your eye, not even remotely threatening. Those should be sharper, you think, irrationally. Maybe I'll file them for him.
You tilt your face into his touch, questioning, let him cradle your fragile human skull in the large palm of his hand.
"Please," he manages at last, hoarse and flimsy.
Oh.
Well, of course.
