  1. Why exactly is AO3 still endorsing Egon Murk's right-wing troll platform xitter? I don't see how endorsing a right-wing fascist propaganda medium is in alignment with... anything AO3 stands for.

      Hi,

The OTW does not endorse or support any particular social media platform. For tens of thousands of fans, X/Twitter is the primary place where they discuss fannish topics and keep up with fan-related news. As such, the OTW has a presence on X/Twitter so that we can provide news to our fans. This is important for increasing our ability to reach fans and making sure that OTW news is accessible to them.

      1. For tens of thousands of fans, Mastodon/the fediverse is the primary place where they discuss fannish topics and TRY to keep up with news, but sites like AO3 deny accessibility to those news there by conscious decision to not engage with fans who use a platform that is actually made by people for people. You do not go everywhere the fans are.

And in that, there is always a DECISION what you consider important enough to do, and what you don't. There are fans on every platform on the internet. You just pick which one you deem important - and in continuing to support xitter, you send the signal that you support 'fans' who support right-wing propaganda, lies, disinformation and anti-human rights campaigns, because that is what xitter stands for in its current status.
you do not support fans who uphold AO3's founding principles of self-organized fandom spaces, or you would support fans on mastodon.

        1. Hi, This is Gabe.

"This year, we added two new social media platforms to our posting rota: Bluesky and TikTok[.]"

It's pretty integral for marketing to have a Xitter, No matter how shitty the platform is. I'm not really in with the fandom culture, (I'm the founder of steam, not a teenager. Sadly. I'd do anything to not be 62.) but I'm pretty sure they were just saying something sporadically without much thought behind it.

Unfortunately, There are more Xitter users than Mastedon/Bluesky, But atleast they're making SOME effort.

Maybe one day we'll see a mass move of businesses away from Xitter to Bluesky/Masterdon, But if you're an open-source non-profit, You really need anyway to get the word out and receive donations.

          1. I'm not a teenager either. and neither are the people posting from official AO3 accounts.

The mass move is already happening, and if nobody brings it up, then of course, it won't be heard. I know media outlets that have analyzed their response ratio and they get more traffic from mastodon than twitter, though they have a theoretically much higher number of "followers" on xitter. anyone who has actually taken a look at their followers on xitter the last 1,5 years knows that almost all new accounts are fake, trollfarm accounts just bought to make numbers. relevance of the platform has been crashing and is nearing nonexistant, especially with democratic (and I don't mean the us party, I mean people living and valuing democracies) audiences.

also, mastodon is entirely open to being integrated with APIs, meaning open to crossposting without having to pay money to access features like that.

But everybody puts more energy into arguming why it it's unreasonable to even LOOK at Mastodon, than doing even the most superficial test of whether it might just be worth a look.

    2. I believe they have a Twitter simply because its a big platform, it's easy to use, and it reaches more people that way! Like Twitter or not, you can't argue the amount of people still on it, thus AO3 uses it because there's traffic there to get the word out about updates, site downage, and security issues. It's all about what works for business I guess, instead of opinion. They're just trying to get on all big name social platforms they can. Besides, I highly doubt republicans are using ao3 to read anime yaoi fluff at 3am like the rest of us. More than half of them are above the age of 40 anyhow and don't even know how to mute their cellphones lol.
