Comment on OTW Finance: 2021 Budget

  1. I really think the site could use a page selector or page number finder. I hate having to go through each eight pages just to find newer works. Also adding a random work generator could be useful in getting lesser known creators works seen and letting users who have read the top twenty pages of ;hits, kudos, and last updated, find works that they haven't read before. I also think that there should be a dark them, or warm theme (I just use invert on my phone tho), I've just learned the basics of html and css, and I really like this site but it looks outdated.

I of course recognize that I have no clue how everything works and making those changes would be costly but I think it might be capable of bringing even more users and making it easier for creators to get noticed. I also wonder if you would be capable of selling original works like wattpad or jjwtc ( I probably spelled it wrong but it's basically a chinese webnovel site). I think a lot of those fanfiction works on here are amazing and I sometimes follow the writers, but there might be incentive for making their own works if they could make money.

But I guess this might all be planned anyways...because this in Beta??? Right? I don't know. Lol.

I also think that it'd be cool if you made an app. But I don't know that might be your plan anyways.

    1. Hey, I don't work for ao3 nor anything, but there is a dark theme, you just need to scroll down and click on "choose skin > reversi", it should do the trick.

And you can just search works using tags or clicking in random pages, I don't see why ao3 would implement a tool just to generate a random fic when the point is that the user makes their own experience and don't have their data/tastes collected by cookies.

Also, allowing authors to sell their work in the platform would actually go against their terms, because fanfiction is in a grey area and as long as creators don't make a profit out of it, the site (and its users) is free from any possible law suits. I believe it'd be very difficult to allow original works being sold too, too much trouble for a site that already has a handful to deal with =v

As for the app, ao3 most likely won't be doing it bc Google/Apple actually have restrictions about content and that's something ao3 fights against, plus, the app would probs need to have ads, something that the archive also doesn't want.

AO3 is run by the Organization for Transformative Works, a 501(c)3 nonprofit. That doesn't necessarily mean that they absolutely could not allow authors to charge for original works on the site, but it does mean that they would have to be extremely careful about doing so because if they don't do it just right it would put their nonprofit status in jeopardy. Hosting creative works for free is a public benefit and one of the OTW's main functions as a nonprofit. Allowing individuals to profit from their writing is a private benefit, and one that that they don't have to do in order to accomplish their other public functions. Which means that if the site became more popular for people profiting off their writing than people posting free writing, they could lose their nonprofit status. Plus, it's the Organization for Transformative Works, so there might be an argument to be made to the IRS that allowing people to charge for original works at all would be so far from the group's actual purpose that it wouldn't be allowed, period.

I'm sure there is probably some way they could do it very carefully and make sure it stays within the necessary limits, but tbh I'd rather they put their time and energy into maintaining and improving what we've got instead of trying to turn the site into something else and running the risk of losing their nonprofit status entirely.

Also, there are a ton of ways to find new random fics. IDK how you normally search for fics - by fandom tag? Ship tag? Either way, you could try adding another tag that you like, like a particular AU or trope, to the search filter to only see those fics. The smaller set will make it easier to find new things you haven't read. Or go to the bottom of the filters where it says "more options" and look at things only with a certain word count, or only posted within a certain date range.

Also, when you're in a tag and have it sorted by date posted or whatever, you don't have to click through page by page if you don't want to. Click on any page other than the first, and in the URL you'll notice at the end it says "?page=2" (or whatever page you're on). If you want to randomly jump to page 50 and see what's there, replace the 2 with a 50.

    3. Hi, maybe you know this already but when you search for new fics in your fandom, if you click on the search button (on top of the home screen) and then on "edit your search" button (so far you don't have to put any keywords in, just leave it blank) you'll get a page where you can choose from what fandoms you want to search, what characters, pairings etc. And on the bottom under the "sort by" button you have pre-selected "best match" but you can change that to "date posted" to see the newest fics first! or to "date updated" so you will see first the fics that are updated more lately!

the same thing applies to using filters on the right-sided menu, whether on web or mobile version, while browsing certain tags (e.g. fandom or pairing tag). there it's the first clickable space - "sort by" and you can change it to "date updated" or "date posted" to see the newest fics first!

      hope that helps.
