Chapter Text

Oikawa moved through the streets like a man possessed.

He had waited barely thirty seconds at the bus stop before he simply grew too anxious to wait any longer and turned in the direction of your apartment complex. He bobbed and weaved his way through the night crowd, doing his best not to push anyone out of the way in his haste.

As he moved, he saw a couple at a flower stand, the man handing a small bundle of flowers out to the woman he was with - her face lighting up brighter than the stars in the sky. Oikawa hesitated for just a moment, wondering if he should stop and do the same for you.

No, he shook his head and continued his hurried steps down the street. You weren’t the type to want any flashy, cliche gestures. He knew he just had to get to you as soon as possible, to tell you what he had realized he was thinking and feeling before he ran out of nerves and time.

You had neatly settled yourself into bed, the softness of your fluffy comforter enveloping you like a cloud, when there was a series of loud banging knocks on your door. You startled a bit, jumping slightly in your bed as the knocking continued.

You flipped on the light in your main room, padding over to the door thinking there must be some kind of emergency from a neighbor. Looking through the peephole, you discovered that you were very wrong in your assumption, and opened the door with a confused look gracing your face.

“Tooru?”

“I don’t know what the future is going to bring for me,” He said, sounding out of breath. “I don’t know what I’m going to do, but I know I want you there with me.”

“What?” You stood there, dumbfounded. You hadn’t expected to see him after saying goodnight, let alone to have him standing on your doorstep and professing his feelings.

Oikawa took a step into your apartment, pressing right up against you as he shut the door with a flourish behind him. Your breath caught in your throat from the sudden closeness, nearly falling backwards from the movement until his arm wrapped around you and pulled you close. His other hand lifted and brushed your hair back away from your face, studying every inch of you.

“(Y/n), I am falling in love with you.” He said, a smile growing more with each word he spoke although his eyes were still serious. “I want to do it all with you, everything.”

“Are you sure?” You asked, finally wrapping your own arms around him slowly, clutching at the back of his shirt tightly as he did his best to pull you even closer. “Everything is… a lot.”

He chuckled, letting his head fall back momentarily as he laughed up at the ceiling before looking back down at you. You felt his hand squeeze at your waist, the hand that was once running through your hair now falling down to cup your chin in a gentle but firm grip.

“Somehow I feel like it’s not going to be enough,” He spoke softly.

You took in a deep breath, the air catching as you felt a giddy warmth spread up from your chest. You hadn’t been expecting this tonight, or even in the immediate future, but the longer you stood wrapped in Oikawa’s arms the more grounded and complete you felt.

“Hey,” You said after a few moments of silence, pulling away from his closeness to get a good look up at his eyes. “I’m falling in love with you too.”

Oikawa smiled. Not the show-stopper or the one he used in front of crowds, but one that was subtle and reached his eyes. “Good,” He said, leaning down to press his lips against yours. He couldn’t hold back the smile even as he was kissing you, the two of you laughing as he continued to press himself against you and keep the two of you attached in some way.

“Come with me,” He said. “Wherever I go, whatever happens, come with me.”

“Well, it’s not exactly how I always pictured all of us reuniting, but I suppose it’ll do.”

You had to control your laughter from behind your hand to avoid causing too much of a scene while the overhead speakers made announcements in a wide range of languages. Different sections of the crowd cheered when they heard information in their native language, barely understanding anything else that was said - but it didn’t matter. The atmosphere was electric, there was a buzzing in the air that you could just feel down to your bones.

You were seated pretty high up, in an observation deck reserved mostly for family and other VIPs to watch the matches from. Normally, someone from a visiting country would have to sit in the stands with the rest of the fans regardless of who they were a guest of, but Iwaizumi managed to pull a few extra strings and you were allowed to watch the game from up high with his wife.

The time seemed to have passed by in the blink of an eye and you were still in awe that you were able to find yourself where you were today. In Oikawa’s home country watching him face off against a team filled with old rivals, in the pale blue uniform of the country you two had been officially calling home for the last few years.

Iwaizumi’s wife wrapped a hand around your arm and pointed down below with her other one, eyes lighting up with excitement as your gaze followed her directions. Her finger pointed at a pair of figures hugging down on the court. You had to laugh because you instantly recognized the bright red hair of the younger boy Oikawa would occasionally facetime with who you had been surprised to learn was an old rival from high school. Iwaizumi’s wife continued to point out other players from the Japanese team, letting you know how they related to Oikawa and what they were doing now.

You listened as best you could, but your focus was primarily on your boyfriend.

He looked excited, thrilled. His eyes, while always holding a glimmer to them naturally, seemed to be alight with something even more today. You figured that the added motivation was due to a few new members to the Japan team that he was excited to play against, but you would later find out that that wasn’t the case at all.

“Are you really going to risk your future on a volleyball game?”

Oikawa turned, hands resting on his hips, and smiled at his old friend. Iwaizumi stood a few feet away, being sure to stay on the Japan team’s side of the court during warm-ups but still close enough that he didn’t have to yell over the crowd.

“Ah, Iwa.” Oikawa shook his head and matched his friend’s stance, arms crossed over his chest. “It’s not much of a risk if you already know what the outcome is going to be.”

“So you’re not going to do it then?” Iwaizumi deadpanned back. “I mean, you said you’d propose after you beat us today, but that’s clearly not going to happen.”

Oikawa let out a loud laugh, head falling backwards with his eyes closed. The sound of a horn over the loudspeakers told the players and coaches that warmups were done and the game would officially be starting. Oikawa nodded to his old friend as he turned away, speaking to his teammates with a fearsome glint in his eyes. “All right folks, are you ready?” He said. “This is going to be one extravagant family quarrel.”

His teammates all nodded, knowing smiles on their faces as the starting players moved out onto the court.

You watched as Oikawa was given the ball from the referee, spinning it in his hands while the rest of the world seemed to fade away. As the whistle blew to start the match, Oikawa threw the ball into the air, swinging his arms and took giant leaping steps until he was flying in the air. His form was perfect, the sound of his hand hitting the leather ball was loud. No matter how many times you saw it, watching Oikawa serve would always take your breath away.

You waited in the designated family waiting area for Argentina, making casual conversation with a few others there who you had been able to get familiar with while traveling and through special team events. The attention of everyone was pulled away from their conversations as the doors to the locker room opened and players started piling out.

Still distracted by what you were talking about with the mother of one of the players, you hadn’t noticed that Oikawa had come out and was patiently waiting for you to turn around. The older woman in front of you had a wide-eyed look on her face, which concerned you, until she silently swatted at you to turn around.

It was then that you noticed the entire room had gone silent. Confused, you looked to each of the faces that were gazing at you, your eyebrows furrowed together as you tried to figure out what was going on - until you heard his voice.

“(Y/n), baby, turn around.”

Whirling around, you finally took notice of Oikawa. Behind you. On the floor.

Well, on one knee to be precise.
