Chapter Text
“Today we will be discussing the different species.”
His class practically vibrated in their seats. Discussing the supernatural species was always a favorite topic for his classes. And everything year without fail, there was always one student that-
“Mr. Aizawa, what species are you?” Ashido asked excitedly.
Shouta gave her a blank look, “We're not discussing me Miss Ashido, we're covering the different species.”
She pouted but left it be.
Of course, he knew better than to assume that the class of teenagers had dropped the topic in its entirety. Years of teaching teenagers had taught him that once they were focused on something they'd never let it go. Every year when this lesson came up in the curriculum he braced himself to be asked about his own species. It was irrelevant. Unrelated. It needn't be brought up. Yet students always poked and asked. Each year he denied them an answer and urged them to move on. Some classes would actually drop it, others would push the envelope, and then a few would go to extremes to find out. Unfortunately for him, he already knew what type of class he had this year.
Shouta resigned himself to his fate. This class would not be one to abandon the pursuit.
Sure enough, the next time they had class after starting their new chapter on the different supernatural species his students were huddled up trying to deduce his species. Aizawa sighed as he stood behind the desk. This was going to be a long year…
“Please return to your seats so we can start the lesson.” He commanded.
The class scurried to their seats, some looking him over as if that would reveal what he was. He nearly scoffed at the notion. Instead he reminded himself that curiosity was normal and he ought to encourage it rather than diminish it.
“To begin, we will go over the six commonly found species. Would anyone like to give me one of the various species?” He asked his class.
A few hands rose from the typical students as well as a few from the others. He called on Denki Kaminari who looked confident.
“Witches!” He said excitedly.
Shouta huffed in amusement. He shouldn't be surprised that his class would offer up their own species.
“Good.” He praised, “Witches are a magic filled race capable of casting spells, creating potions, and making wards and runes. Who else has one?”
“Dragons.” Bakugou said from his seat, smoke wafting from his nostrils.
Aizawa nodded, “Dragons are a diverse race with many subspecies. Appearances vary and abilities often include the ability to interact with fire in various ways.”
“Faerie!” Hagakure cheered.
“Faerie also have various appearances and a few subspecies as well.” He began, “They are often conduits of magic, similar abilities to witches but their power isn't inherent the way witches are. They draw power from the magic in the world. Some subspecies can fly, others can shapeshift. Anyone else?”
Asui raised her hand politely, he gave her a nod.
“Mer folk?” She offered.
Aizawa nodded, “Most mer people can shift to walk freely on land though they can't hold the transformation for extended periods of time. They're sea dwelling primarily and there are many sects to their race.”
No one seemed particularly interested in listing the last two species so he simply did it for them.
“Werewolves and Vampires are the last two. Both are one of the few races capable of converting someone though as we all know that is strictly prohibited in modern society. Werewolves can transform at any time despite popular belief, though their power is strengthened during peak lunar cycles. They have strong pack dynamics. Vampires are primarily solitary outside of covens in comparison. Another common misconception is that they cannot exist in the sunlight. This is false. In reality, their power is dampened, or rather their power is stronger at night.” He finished with a huff.
Despite himself he still asked, “Are there any questions?”
Multiple hands shot up.
“Do vampires drink blood?”
“Are wyverns a dragon subspecies because my cousin is one and-”
“Wait, are fairies and fae the same thing?”
“If a Mer and a Dragon marry and have a baby would it just be a sea serpent?”
“Can I go to the bathroom?”
“Are you a witch or a werewolf?”
Aizawa sighed and rubbed his temples, “Yes, you may go to the bathroom. Vampires can drink blood but they do not have to. Wyverns are technically a subspecies, yes. Fairies and Fae are subspecies of Faerie. If a Mer and a Dragon procreated it would be up to genetics. And I will not be answering any questions about my own race.”
The class let out various noises of disappointment but Shouta had long since decided he didn't care how disappointed the classes he taught got. His race was his business and his alone.
