The Weight of Stars

Chapter 6: Home

Chapter Text

Earth smelled alive.

That was the first thing Billy Keikeya noticed.

Not metal.

Not oil.

Not smoke recycled endlessly through ventilation systems.

Life.

Real life.

Wind moved through tall grass beneath a pale blue sky while distant mountains stood against the horizon like something from a forgotten dream. Birds called somewhere nearby, unseen and wild. The air itself felt strange in Billy’s lungs after years aboard ships.

Fresh.

Human.

Around them, survivors from across the fleet wandered the hillside in stunned silence. Some cried openly. Some laughed. Some simply fell to their knees and touched the ground as though afraid it might disappear if they blinked.

After everything…

They had made it.

Billy turned slowly in place taking it all in, overwhelmed almost to the point of dizziness.

Behind him, the battered remains of the fleet rested in the distance beneath the sky. Raptors crossed overhead one final time while people unloaded supplies, embraced one another, and stared at the new world waiting for them.

Earth.

Real Earth.

And for a moment, it felt like all the suffering might finally have meant something.

Then Billy remembered Laura.

His joy faltered instantly.

He turned quickly.

She sat several yards away beneath a tree, wrapped in a blanket despite the warmth of the afternoon. William Adama sat beside her on the grass, one arm around her shoulders protectively.

Even from a distance, Billy could see how weak she’d become.

The journey had taken what little strength she had left.

Laura looked pale beneath the sunlight, exhausted in a way sleep could no longer fix.

But she was smiling.

Gods, she was smiling.

Billy walked toward them quietly.

Kara Thrace sat nearby tossing small stones absentmindedly while Lee Adama unpacked supplies beside her.

For once, no one was arguing.

No alarms.

No war.

No cylons hunting them through the stars.

Just wind moving through grass.

Laura looked up when Billy approached.

“There you are.”

Billy crouched beside her immediately. “You should’ve told me you came out here alone.”

Adama snorted softly. “She ordered everyone away.”

Laura gave Billy a tired smile. “I wanted to see Earth properly.”

Billy looked at her carefully.

Her breathing was shallow now.

Uneven.

Fear tightened in his chest immediately.

Laura noticed.

She always noticed.

Her hand reached for his gently.

“Don’t,” she whispered.

Billy swallowed hard. “Don’t what?”

“Spend my last day looking terrified.”

The words shattered the fragile peace around them.

Kara stopped moving entirely.

Lee looked away.

Adama’s arm tightened around Laura instinctively.

Billy felt like all the air had vanished from the world.

“No,” he said immediately. “No, Laura—”

“It’s alright.”

“No it isn’t.”

Laura’s eyes filled softly with tears.

But she looked calm.

Too calm.

That terrified him most of all.

She looked like someone who already knew she was leaving.

Billy dropped onto the grass beside her fully now, gripping her hand tighter.

“You’re supposed to stay,” he said quietly, voice breaking. “You were supposed to live here with us.”

Laura smiled sadly.

“I did live long enough.”

“No.”

“Yes.”

Her thumb brushed gently across his knuckles like she was trying to comfort him instead.

Gods.

Even now she was taking care of everyone else first.

Kara suddenly stood and walked a few steps away, visibly emotional for once. Billy heard her curse under her breath roughly while wiping at her face.

Lee looked close to tears too.

Adama remained silent.

But the look on his face—

Billy would never forget it.

It was grief before loss.

The unbearable pain of watching someone you love slip away slowly while being powerless to stop it.

Laura shifted weakly against him.

“I’m tired.”

Billy immediately leaned closer. “Do you want to lie down?”

She nodded faintly.

Together, Billy and Adama carefully lowered her into the grass beneath the tree. Adama sat behind her so she could rest partly against him while Billy stayed close at her side, still holding her hand tightly.

The wind moved softly through the hillside around them.

Sunlight warmed the grass.

Earth.

They had finally made it home.

Laura looked upward toward the sky for a long moment.

“It’s beautiful,” she whispered again.

Adama pressed his forehead briefly against her hair.

“Yes.”

Silence settled over all of them.

Not empty.

Just full.

Full of memories and grief and love and survival.

Laura’s eyes drifted toward Kara first.

“You found us here.”

Kara laughed shakily through tears. “Yeah, well… somebody had to fly the damn ship.”

Laura smiled faintly.

Then she looked toward Lee.

“You became your father.”

Lee let out a weak, emotional laugh. “Took me long enough.”

Finally her gaze settled on Billy.

And everything in him broke apart.

Because she looked at him with so much love.

So much pride.

“My Billy,” she whispered softly.

He started crying before he could stop himself.

Laura squeezed his hand weakly.

“You stayed.”

“Of course I stayed,” he choked out.

“You became family.”

Billy bowed his head, unable to speak.

Laura’s breathing grew shallower.

Adama looked terrified now despite trying to hide it.

“Laura…”

She turned her head slightly toward him.

And whatever passed between them then felt too intimate for words.

Years of love.

Years of missed chances.

Years of surviving each other.

Adama’s voice cracked completely.

“I love you.”

Laura smiled softly.

“I know.”

Tears slid down Adama’s face openly now.

No one looked away.

No one pretended not to see.

Because they were family.

And families stayed.

Laura’s gaze drifted upward one final time toward the endless blue sky above Earth.

Her breathing slowed.

One word slipped out in a slow breath.

"Love"

Billy tightened his grip on her hand desperately.

Then slowly…

Quietly…

Laura Roslin slipped away surrounded by the people who loved her most.

The wind continued moving through the grass.

Birds called somewhere in the distance.

And beneath the open sky of Earth, humanity mourned one of its last great leaders.

Billy lowered his head against her hand and cried openly.

Kara stood nearby silently weeping.

Lee wrapped an arm around his father’s shoulders.

Bill held Laura close even after she was gone, unable to let her go yet.

None of them moved for a very long time.

Because after years of war and running and loss…

They had finally found home.

And they weren't ready to live without her just yet.

Notes:

Sidenote, I love how funny Kara is in this, think I was writing this basing her humour from mine ;)
