Chapter Text
Noah woke up before the sun.
The house was too quiet.
Not the peaceful kind of quiet. Not the kind that settles over a place like a blanket. This quiet felt hollow—like someone had scooped out the middle of everything and left only walls and ticking clocks behind.
Snow pressed heavy against his bedroom window. The glass had frosted around the edges overnight, and the world beyond it was blurred white and pale blue. The storm had passed sometime before dawn, leaving the yard buried deep enough that the mailbox looked like it was drowning.
He rolled onto his side and reached for his phone before he was fully conscious.
No new notifications.
He stared at the ceiling for a minute, listening to the hum of the heater and the distant creak of the house adjusting to the cold. His mom had left early for work. He’d heard the garage door rumble open around six. His stepdad wouldn’t be home until tonight.
Which meant it was just him.
He turned back to the window. Snow day, technically. Christmas break had already started, but this was the kind of storm that shut down everything anyway—roads buried, sidewalks erased, the world temporarily paused.
He reached for his phone again.
Still nothing.
He told himself not to text first.
He lasted thirty seconds.
Noah: "u alive or did the snow take u out"
He tossed the phone onto his chest and watched the message sit there. Delivered.
The typing bubbles appeared almost instantly.
His stomach flipped the way it always did.
Eli: "barely. my dad made me shovel at 7am
i think i lost 3 toes"
Noah snorted and rolled onto his back again.
Noah: "tragic. should i plan the funeral now or later"
Eli: "later. i have to finish the driveway first"
Noah smiled at the ceiling.
It felt different texting him when they weren’t physically in the same room. Quieter. More dangerous somehow. There was no way to read his expressions, no way to see the way Eli’s eyes crinkled when he was teasing.
But there was also something softer about it. Something honest.
Noah: "how bad is it over there"
A pause.
Eli:."bad enough that tyler tried to sled down the front steps
he wiped out"
Noah laughed out loud.
Noah: "tell him i said karma"
Eli: "he says ur a traitor"
Noah hesitated.
He pictured Eli outside—hood up, cheeks red from the cold, breath clouding in the air. Snow sticking to his hair. Gloves damp. That stupid half-smirk he got when he was pretending not to be miserable.
He missed him.
And it had only been two days.
He typed before he could overthink it.
Noah: "i wish i was there
The message hung in the air between them.
A minute passed.
Two.
He felt ridiculous for sending it. It was just a storm. They’d see each other soon. Why did everything feel bigger when it came to Eli?
The typing bubbles appeared.
Disappeared.
Appeared again.
Eli: "yeah?"
Noah swallowed.
Noah: "yeah"
Another pause.
Longer this time.
He imagined Eli stepping away from Tyler. Going inside. Taking his gloves off. Maybe reading the message twice.
His phone buzzed.
Eli: "i wish u were too."
The room felt warmer suddenly.
Noah sat up, pressing his back against the headboard.
Outside, wind pushed loose snow off the roof in soft cascades. The sky was pale and endless.
They texted through breakfast.
Through the late morning.
Through everything.
---
By noon, Noah had moved downstairs. He curled up on the couch with a blanket and watched snow drift sideways past the sliding glass doors. The world looked untouched.
His phone vibrated again.
Eli: "ok serious question. if we weren’t snowed in... where would u wanna go today"
Noah thought about it.
He thought about the way their first kiss had felt under the bleachers—cold air, adrenaline, hands trembling just slightly. He thought about the way Eli’s fingers had brushed his jaw like he was afraid Noah might disappear.
He typed slowly.
Noah: "somewhere no one else is."
The typing bubbles came immediately.
Eli: "cyptic."
Noah: "like a lake, or the woods, or somewhere stupid like that."
A pause.
Eli: "not stupid."
Noah stared at that for a while.
Noah: "what about u??"
It took longer this time.
He pictured Eli thinking. He pictured him sitting on his bed now, maybe hoodie swapped for something warmer, hair still messy.
Eli: "i was thinking. there’s that lookout spot past miller ridge. the one u can see the whole valley from i've always wanted to go up there in the snow."
Noah’s heart kicked hard.
Noah had looked at it and thought: someday.
Noah: "that would be insane in a good way"
Eli: "we could go when the roads clear like in a few weeks before school starts again"
Noah felt the idea settle in his chest like something fragile and glowing.
A plan.
Not just “hang out later.”
Not just “see you soon.”
A specific place.
A specific time.
Together.
He chewed on his lip before responding.
Noah: "just us?"
There it was. The thing he was actually asking.
A long pause.
Long enough that his brain started spinning.
What if that was too much?
What if he’d pushed too far?
What if Eli didn’t—
His phone buzzed.
Eli: "yeah. just us."
Noah let out a breath he didn’t realize he’d been holding.
Noah: "okay."
Another message came right after.
Eli: "like, we pack hot chocolate and freeze our faces off and pretend we’re in some dramatic movie scene."
Noah grinned.
Noah: "u in charge of the hot chocolate. i don’t trust myself not to burn it"
Eli: "deal"
They fell into easy conversation after that. Not heavy. Not intense. Just soft.
They talked about Christmas presents they hadn’t wrapped yet.
About how Tyler had tried to build a snow fort that immediately collapsed.
About how Noah’s power flickered earlier and he’d thought the world might actually end.
Hours slipped by.
Every time Noah set his phone down, he found himself picking it back up.
At some point, Eli sent a picture.
It was blurry. Probably taken with cold hands. Snow piled high in his front yard. Tyler in the background mid-snowball throw.
But Eli was in the corner of the frame.
Half-smiling.
Hair damp.
Cheeks red.
Noah stared at it longer than he meant to.
He typed before he could stop himself.
Noah: "u look cold"
The response was instant.
Eli: "u volunteering to fix that?"
Noah’s pulse stuttered.
He stared at the screen.
He could feel heat creeping up his neck even though he was alone.
Noah:."maybe."
Three dots.
Eli: "dangerous answer"
Noah laughed quietly to himself.
Noah: "u r the one who asked"
The conversation shifted after that.
Not in a dramatic way. Just a subtle change in tone. The kind that happens when both people realize they’re circling something real.
The storm outside picked up again mid-afternoon. Wind howled around the corners of the house. Snow hit the windows like handfuls of sand.
Noah sat cross-legged on the living room floor, phone in his lap.
Eli: "do u ever think about like how weird it is that this happened"
Noah knew exactly what he meant.
Them.
The first time their shoulders had brushed and neither had moved away.
The bleachers.
The almosts before that.
Noah: "yeah."
He hesitated.
Then added:
Noah: "i think about it a lot"
A longer pause.
Eli: "good weird or bad weird."
Noah’s fingers hovered over the keyboard.
He thought about the fear that still lingered sometimes. About the way he still felt a spike of panic if someone looked at them too long. About how small their town was.
But he also thought about Eli’s hand on his wrist that day.
About the way he’d said Noah’s name like it mattered.
Noah: "good weird. scary sometimes. but good"
The typing bubble blinked on and off like Eli was rewriting something.
Finally.
Eli: "same."
Another message right after:
Eli: "i don’t regret it. just so u know"
Noah’s chest tightened.
He hadn’t realized he’d needed to hear that.
Noah: "me either"
The heater kicked on again. The house felt less hollow now.
They started planning more seriously.
What day in a few weeks might work.
How long the hike would take.
Whether Tyler would notice if they disappeared for a few hours (answer: definitely, but he’d survive).
Eli suggested they go right after New Year’s. Before school started back up. When everything still felt suspended.
Eli: "like start the year somewhere high up with a good view"
Noah stared at that.
It felt symbolic in a way that made his stomach flip.
Noah: "that sounds like something u saw on pinterest"
Eli: "shut up. i’m trying to be poetic"
Noah smiled so hard his cheeks hurt.
They talked until the sky outside shifted from pale gray to deep blue.
Until the storm softened.
Until the world went still.
By evening, Noah’s phone battery was at 12%.
Noah: "if my phone dies. just know. today didn’t suck"
A pause.
Then:
Eli: "it didn’t"
Another pause.
And then:
Eli: "i like days like this even if we’re not in the same place"
Noah’s throat felt tight again.
He typed carefully.
Noah: "me too"
His phone buzzed one last time before he plugged it in.
Eli: "few weeks. miller ridge. hot chocolate. don’t back out on me."
Noah looked at the snow outside. At the untouched white yard glowing under the porch light.
At the world waiting.
Noah: "wouldn’t dream of it"
He set his phone down after that.
The house was still quiet.
But it didn’t feel hollow anymore.
Upstairs, he lay in bed with the curtains half open. The moonlight made the snow shimmer like something unreal.
A few weeks.
He let the thought settle into him.
A lookout.
Cold air.
Just them.
Something about it felt like standing at the edge of something bigger than he could name.
Outside, the last of the wind died down.
Inside, Noah closed his eyes with his phone still warm in his hand.
And for the first time all day, the quiet didn’t feel empty.
It felt full of what was coming next.
