Chapter Text

New York

Politics. It always comes back to politics. Every outfit, every hobby, every sentence, just everything was always looked at as if there was meaning to it. Everything he did was a reflection of his father, Senator Crouch. There was nothing more in this world that Barty wanted more than to watch his father burn. Flames and all. No part of his life could go without a remark from his father. A small comment on his dirty converse, a statement of anger disguised as disappointment when a grade dipped below the A minus range, and probably the worst: the insults toward Evan Rosier

Barty tolerated a lot from his father. He allowed Crouch Senior to strike him, yell at him, or insult him. This generosity did not extend to when his father would berate his sick mother for not cooking his steak well done or when he would make snide, thinly veiled homophobic remarks at Evan. The lack of tolerance is actually what got him in this situation in the first place. What is that situation you might ask?

At this point in time Barty Crouch Jr stands in a corner with shards of a glass vase his mother loved next to him. His foot having multiple shards lodged into it, while his face having a small gash from where the pieces ricocheted up due to the force of impact.

It wasn’t a well kept secret that Barty Crouch Junior and Barty Crouch Senior didn’t get along. Most people saw it clearly, but none could imagine that Senator Crouch would be able to bruise and bloody his own child. Barty stopped thinking he was a good person when he was nine years old. It was the first time he had felt the want for his father to disappear, to leave him and his mother alone. At 13 he realized that he didn’t want his father to disappear, he wanted him to pay, to burn. From then on, he had small rebellions like playing music a little too loud, coming home a little later, or making his own friends.

Insert Evan Rosier.

A living Angel. A beautiful boy with soft blonde hair and eyes like a hurricane. He was perfect. He was beautiful like a painting being displayed in the Louvre. Evan was the sun and Barty was in his orbit. He was the best thing that could ever have entered Barty’s life.

At 13, Barty made contact with those blue eyes for the first time. A tap on the shoulder changed the trajectory of his whole life. If it wasn’t for Evan Rosier, Barty would probably be on the Pre-Law track to misery.

A simple “do you need a pencil” gave Barty a whole new outlook on life which is why he will never let his father insult Evan as long as he lives.

No one had paid attention to what Barty said like Evan had. Evan remembered his favorite color, the first book he read, the day his mother had been diagnosed, the way he loves olives with his entire being even though Evan could never understand why anyone could ever love to eat something so odd.

If you would ask Barty, he'd think that Evan Rosier was made to love him. Some power up above believed that Barty was lovable and not a disappointment.

At this point he's used to it. The pain he's forced to receive from his father. He might even love it as crazy as it sounds. It makes him feel like a slightly better person when he defends his mother from his father's wrath. He doesn't mind seeing his face bloody if it means his mother will be happy, but she's not. She stares at him with pity and pain. That's when a wave of guilt washes over him. The person he loves most in this world looking at him likes a child who doesn't understand the nuances between right and wrong. That's when it clicks.

It will never be enough. He will never be enough.

-

It is two am when Sirius Black is woken up to the sound of the landline incessantly beeping in his ear.

A rough voice talks rushed and quietly, "Hey it's me. Can you come pick me up"

"I'm sorry, who is this?"

"What do you mean who is this?  It's me!" The audacity of this caller. Waking Sirius up and then having the nerve to talk back. What in the fresh hell is happening.

"Bro, I think you have the wrong number because I literally do not know who the fuck you are."

"Regulus, I swear to god." Is that... shit.

"Wait, Barty, is that you."

"You've been friends with me for years and you just recognize my voice." Barty saying obviously exasperated.

"It's me, Sirius. You dickwad."

"Oh. Oh. Shit. Sorry Sirius." It's almost hilarious to Sirius to hear the realization set in that he indeed is not Regulus.

"I feel like I'm going to regret this, but where are you?"

A relieved sigh is heard first and then a mutter comes through "111 West 57th street"

"Oh you rich bastard. Steinway tower. Making me come uptown to goddamn billionaires row. You're lucky your Reggies friend."

'Fuck off" the line cuts.

Sirius takes the C and heads uptown. He really hates the subway at this point at night. It's the druggies and the crazies just waiting to attack. It reminds him of his mom. But then again, she would never be caught dead on a train. He steps off and walks over to Steinway tower to see a silhouette resembling Barty sitting by the water fountain.

"Hey" Sirius says quietly, hoping to not startle Barty.

"Sirius." Barty turns around and the state looks all too familiar to what Sirius would look like if he forgot make his bed before leaving school.

"Shit."

"Yeah... Senator Crouch strikes again! This time it's not a bullshit bill to present to congress, but actually hitting his kid while his sick wife stares up at him in shock and acceptance!" Barty says sarcastically as one tear escapes his left eye.

"I'm sorry Barty"

"Shut up.

"..."

"Do you mind if I stay over tonight. I would've gone to Evan's but he has family over. I left him a voicemail i’ll be at yours so i’ll leave early."

"Don't worry about it. Calm down. I'll ask Remus to help you out with the face stuff."

"No."

"Huh. What do you mean no?"

"It's just that um. Shit, how do I say this. I like it when Evan does it. He does it in this like specific way and shit."

"Sure.. Specific way. Whatever man, suit yourself, but let's go, 'kay." Sirius is not dealing with another homoerotic friendship, he has his own to deal with. Plus he just wants to sleep.

-

Evan Rosier has always been a sweet person. Old ladies would pull his cheeks and give him toffee. Parents liked him. Teachers loved him. He was a good guy. So it came as a total shock to most when he became attached to the hip with ‘rebellious son of Senator Crouch: Barty Crouch Junior’. People were still nice to him but wary of the bad boy next to him.

More like wannabe bad boy. Evan knew Barty like the back of his hand, and Barty was anything but. He shrieked at butterflies, got overtly sweet drinks at Starbucks, and ate olives like it was his last meal.

Barty was a dork, but he was Evan’s dork.

Evan decided to become a doctor when he was 14 years old, which was coincidentally the first time Barty had come to his home after a bad interaction with his father. Evan knew he was lucky he had loving parents, a supportive household, and a close relationship with his sister (Pandora). He recognized that his friends did not have the stability he did and made it very clear he and his family would allow anyone to come at anytime if they were in a situation they deemed unsafe. So when Barty came at 11:30 at night with a split lip, Evan let him in, told his parents what happened, and tried to fix Barty’s lip to the beat of his abilities. Barty had made one thing very clear: No cops, No authorities, and No doctors.

At 14, Evan realized how much he loved Barty, and how lucky he was to have his family.

At 15, Evan had cried in Pandora’s room about how he thinks he’s in love with Barty and their friendship will be over if he ever says anything. He decides then, that it doesn’t matter what he and Barty are. As long as they are together in some capacity. Not having him could never be as bad as losing him.

At 16, Evan’s heartbreaks for the first time when he sees Barty and Amelia Bones making out against a locker.

At 17, Evan realizes his life cannot revolve around Barty. He decided enough is enough goes on a date in forever with Gideon Prewett.

For the first time in awhile Evan feels like he floating and can not fall. He feels relieved that nothing is going to break or change. He feels happy and nothing can change that. He goes on a date, has a nice time, raves about it to Dorcas over the phone knowing that Pandora is secretly listening from the home landline, and goes to sleep without a second thought.

It’s nice. He happy and most importantly he’s not thinking about Barty.

Evan wakes up to sound of rain and it feels as though all the happiness from the day before has gone. Something feels wrong.

His answering machine is beeping. Who the fuck could’ve called. Maybe it was Gideon. He presses a button, and the machine beeps and a familiar voice creeps in.

”Hey Evs. Sorry about this. I know you have family over and this is probably the last thing you want to take care of but, um me and my father had y’know an altercation. I was being stupid and wasn’t thinking and it all spiraled, but i’m okay. I think so. There’s a bit of glass but other than that I should be okay. I’m going to go over to Reggie’s tonight, but i’ll pop by in the morning so you can fix me. My personal doctor. I love you, Rosy. See you tomorrow” Barty’s hoarse voice comes through and hits Evan like a truck.

Shit. He shouldn’t have lied about having family over. He could’ve helped Barty before, but now he’s probably spending more time in pain that he should. How is he going to be a doctor is he can barely get his priorities straight. No. Evan remembers, he’s allowed to do things for himself. He’s not evil for going on a date. He should’ve been there for Barty, but he’s allowed to have fun. It’s hard for Evan to make time for himself, and put himself first. Especially when it comes to Barty.

Wait. Did he call Evan ‘Rosy’. He’s never done that before. And wait! He said ‘My personal doctor’. And most importantly he said ‘i love you’. Not love you, but I love you. He’s overthinking this. Barty was probably in shock from his father’s actions.

Pushing him out of his thoughts was the doorbell ringing. Always on time, Barty.

”Hey there Rosy. Dig the new cuts. I think the glass gashes make me look hotter than i did before.”

”You’re a crazy bastard”

”See, but i’m your crazy bastard.”

”Oh shut up and go sit on the bathroom sink and i’ll go get the kit to fix you.”

”Is that how you’re going to treat you patients Dr. Rosier. Tsk Tsk. These children aren’t going to stand a chance.”

”i hate you” Lie. Evan Rosier is a dirty, dirty liar.

Evan hates having to fix Barty. It hurts knowing that Barty’s father is the one who is inflicting this upon him. What Evan hates more is being this close to Barty. Evan can see every pore and follicle on his face. Barty can feel Evan’s breath on his face as he puts antiseptic on him.

“Has anyone ever told you that you have a slutty waist?” Barty says breaking the comfortable silence and placing a light touch upon said waist.

“What the actual fuck Barty.” He pulls back, increasing the distance between them, while also increasing the strength of the grasp Barty has on Evan.

“Just observing.”

“Shut up.” Evan turns to the side looking slightly frustrated while blushing. Barty still has not taken his hand off.

“Oh Ev, you know i was complimenting you. I’m sorry if it made you feel uncomfortable. Thats the last thing i’d ever want you to feel.” Barty’s eyes look desperate and genuine.

”Calm down Bee. How’s Reggie doing.”

”He seems okay, but Potter needs to realize what he’s missing. Also do you want to go to a Star Wars thing with me, Friday night. Actually did you know…” Evan loves the way Barty’s eyes light up the moment he’s about to rant about Star Wars. His eyes sparkle.

Evan thinks to himself, he wants this nerdy Barty for the rest of his life.

Barty keeps talking until a message relays from the phone.

“Hey Evan. It’s me, Gideon. I had a great time on our date. Was wondering if you want to go to the Met Friday night. Call me when you get a chance! Bye”

Fuck

”Who the fuck is Gideon. He sounds like a douche frat boy?” Barty’s mood instantly changes.

”I went out with him and don’t say that about him.”

”You’ve known him for like a week and you’re defending his honor. Woah.” Barty jumps off the counter and heads toward the door. The stupid voicemail from stupid Gideon keeps playing in his head.

“What kind of name is Gideon, anyway?”

”Better than Bartemius.” What the fuck is up with Barty.

“So are you going to fuck him?” Barty says crossing his arms

”What the fuck Barty?” Evan is so confused and honestly angry.

“Are you going to get fucked by him after a cute art date. Are you going to blow him in the bathroom at the Met.”

“What is wrong with you Barty? Why are you acting like this. You know what. Maybe I will. Maybe I will sleep with him, but guess what it doesn’t fucking matter. It’s not you goddamn business. What I do and who I do is not you fucking problem.”

“I didn’t mean it like that.” Barty steps toward Evan. Their faces barely apart.

“How did you mean it then, huh? You basically just called me a whore for going out on one date. Just because we’re close doesn’t mean you can say shit like that. I’m honestly fucking annoyed right now. Barty I love you, I really do, but you’re a cunt.”

“I’m sorry.”

”You should leave, Just make sure to put ice on the effected areas” Evan feels like he’s going to cry

”Evan-“

”Just go, please.

“Evan I’m sorry-“

”I’m not mad just go away.”

Barty just fucked it up with the one person he loved and cared about the most.

Fuck.
