Chapter Text

The internship week finished with the shocking news that the Hero Killer was arrested after confronting Edgeshot, while Hawks was noted for the incredible rescue work he did throughout the city to the extent of the chaos caused by the Nomu (more the arrest of a villain who burned down an entire section of the city and murdered two heroes that night).

Class 1-A is in high spirits, commenting on the news released on Sunday, despite concerns about an attack by the League of Villains. But all fall silent when Midoriya enters the room, which his most enthusiastic classmates immediately accost.

"Midoriya-kun, are you alright? It must have been shocking to find yourself in the middle of an attack like that!" Uraraka exclaimed as he searched for any sign of injury or injury.

"Um, yeah, I'm fine. Hawks-san gave us clear orders to only help with evacuations so we didn't run into any villains. Although there was a flying Nomu that almost took Monoma-kun away." Izuku mentions it with some shyness.

As all the chaos was settling down and their location was being cleared of civilians, that winged Nomu arrived and grabbed Monoma into his arms, being saved by Ingenium after other heroes managed to take the creature down. It was the highlight of their night, considering Todoroki asked them to stay together before going after the Hawks. All the details of what happened with the other villain were denied him, but Todoroki went into a gloomy mood. Izuku hopes that his friend feels better that morning.

When the door opens again, everyone rushes back to their seats and falls silent. Aizawa gives them a long look before moving to the front of the class.

"Welcome back." Shōta looks at the empty seat belonging to Todoroki, who wrote to her that morning announcing her absence, and frowns and sighs. "Now that the internships are over, it's time to resume classes. Exams are fast approaching, and if you don't pass..."

The class shudders as they witness their teacher's smile, internal panic over the upcoming exams settling in their minds as their teacher maintains a dramatic silence.

"But, before we focus on the next exams, we must review the reports sent by their tutors this week." Aizawa unlocks his tablet and begins to name each student to give them his conclusions obtained from the reports delivered. He doesn't dwell too much on them, motivating them enough to keep trying and showing them where they need to improve, according to the professionals who welcomed them.

He takes the whole class on it, even answering questions from his students and explaining about the summer camp held every year. The class ends very quickly, and Aizawa doesn't hesitate for a second to leave, leaving them alone to wait for his next teacher; he's sure Paper Master will be able to handle them no matter how boisterous they get.

And in a whirlwind of classes, the day ends. Izuku sadly looks at Todoroki's empty seat and leaves with the clear goal of finding his friend. Kaminari calls him when he is just leaving school.

"Midoriya! Ugh, good that I caught up with you! Do you know anything about Todoroki? He hasn't answered since Friday, and, well, is he injured? I know they didn't announce anything on the news, but it would be a big miss for the heroes if the same student from last time gets hurt in an attack." Izuku cuts Kaminari off on his ramblings and gives him a slightly sad smile.

"Todoroki-kun wasn't hurt, but I don't know what happened during the attack. He was with Hawks-san, and neither said anything outside what you hear on the news. He was in a gloomy mood all Saturday, and on Sunday, he didn't return with us, although that was because Endeavor came to pick him up." Izuku explains what happened, although he suspects that Endeavor was not there just for his youngest son, not because of his tense expression and the awkward environment surrounding the three of them (Hawks looked more serious than I'd ever seen him).

Izuku says goodbye to Kaminari and promises to write to share his findings about their mutual friend's condition. But it is not going as well as the teenager would like.

The aviary was empty, and although he went to look around the Todoroki residence, there was no one there either. The last thing he did was write to the group, but no one knew anything about it. Aizawa was the only one with some information, but it wasn't an explanation for Todoroki's absence either.

It isn't until the following Monday that, after a week's absence, Todoroki makes an appearance along with some shocking news that left the entire class at a loss for how to deal with their class president, who, for a change, arrived at a reasonable hour.

That morning they woke up to the news that one of the villains Hosu attacked was Todoroki Tōya, who, until that day, was believed to be dead by his quirk. Many details of his supposed death were revealed, including the assassination attempt on his younger brother, Shōto. The news included statements from Endeavor, Hawks, and the police officers who reviewed the scene. There was also a statement from Todoroki Rei and the other Shoto brothers regarding Tōya.

Izuku now better understands why his friend was in such a gloomy mood after the attack on Hosu, and he can't blame him for wanting his space in such a situation (besides, he's sure Todoroki had Hawks in all that time process). Although Izuku feels that the way the class (except Bakugō) is acting is not beneficial to the situation.

"I can hear them thinking, do it quietly," Todoroki comments before yawning. "Just because my brother is a psychotic villain doesn't mean that from one day to the next, I turned into a glass; however, any questions you have, don't ask."

The silence following his statement is tense, although Izuku observes that several agree with what his class president said. Any attempts at conversation (not that there were any) are cut off when their homeroom teacher walks in.

"Welcome back, Todoroki. Just in time for the preparations for the end-of-semester exams." Aizawa activates the projector and begins explaining the next week's dynamics. "The only classes they will receive during the exams are Heroic Fundamentals and Physical Education in preparation for the final heroics exam. In your first year, you take 21 subjects, of which 20 are graded."

Izuku opens his notebook to write down the exam schedule so he can better organize himself to study.

"Monday will be the exams for Mathematics, Biology, Universal History, and Japanese; Tuesday, they will be: Economics, Sociology, Health Class, and Technology; Wednesday: English, Physics, Modern Literature, and Art History; Thursday: Chemistry, Ethics & Laws, Geography and Orientation for Life; Friday: Artistic Expression, History, and Laboratory. Saturday will be their Heroic Fundamentals exam; they must be presented at eight in the morning."

The class nods as they write down their carefully planned exam schedule, wondering if the other hero class has the same or if they've changed it a bit (although it doesn't make sense for it to be that way).

Todoroki looks at his notebook with scattered notes unrelated to the exam schedule. The meaning of all the information clears only to his eyes.

The future is uncertain, and he is frustrated by it.

Notes:

It's been a while since I hadn't written anything because a) first I got COVID and b) I was doing my thesis, and after that, writing was almost painful. The good news is that I graduated and will soon start working. Maybe I can write more regularly from now on.

I will read the whole story again and make some corrections in the first chapters; I will take advantage of the fact that I have been away for a long time to see with new eyes what I wrote a year ago.

To everyone who has been waiting, thank you for waiting. And as an additional note, the events of this chapter will be deepened later from Shōto's perspective, along with the external consequences of the event.

Thanks so much for reading!

Notes:

This fic is self-satisfied, plain and simple.

I hope you like it.
