Take my bones (I don’t need none)

Summary:

Survival is just that. Survival. You eat. Drink. Fight. Suffer. Sleep. It’s a continuous cycle we all go through until we take our final breath.

But to live?

Margot forgot how to do that for a long time. After loosing her last group and surviving alone for the last couple of months, she stumbles upon something she wasn’t meant to stumble upon.

She finds people, new enemies and old friends, and tries to figure out how to save everyone while the world works against her.

Notes:

Hi all!

Wow, you really just have to start somewhere and the words just stumble from your fingers to the keyboard. This is the first work I plan to make longer. I’ll try to be consistent with updates but no promises, as I can only write when inspiration takes over my brain.

English is not my first language so please, if you find any grammar mistake, tell me so I can correct it.

Have fun reading!

Chapter 1: Prologue

Chapter Text

Your first kill will be a walker.

It's only been a few days since the virus spread. If you're lucky, you found other survivors. People just as fortunate, or unfortunate as you. You've been living on basic essentials, small portions of food and bare sips of water for days. You're hungry, thirsty, dirty and tired. But there is still something else left.

Hope.

Hope for help to come. That humanity as a whole can conquer whatever this hell was. The government would come through and save all of you. They probably had plans for situations like this. Right? Safe zones, bunkers, weapons designed to defend against the living dead. With the help on the navy, air force, army, and all the survivors humanity could win. Right?

You wait. You can't do much else. You try to find community, though with the tensions rising as the days pass, it's hard.
You have weapons now. Before, you could walk out of your house with only your clothes on your back and have no problem. Danger wasn't as prevalent. You carry a knife now. A gun, if you're lucky. A bow or crossbow if you're smart.

And finally, your first kill. You think it's a human at first. You see its figure and decide to approach. Maybe you have a smile, or a wary expression... but you're not worried. Because it's just another survivor. Right?

Then it turns around. You gasp, eyes roaming over the decaying figure of your first victim. Mouth gaping open, rotten teeth snapping at you, hungry for something no human should be hungry for. The smell of a dead body so close to you is shocking. Maybe you were a mortician before and it doesn't bother you as much. Chances are, though, this is the first dead body you've ever seen in your life.

Arms reach towards you, making you stumble back in shock. Milky eyes stare into your soul. You know it can't see you, can't see anything, really... but it feels like it can. See your fears, your terrified expression and reveling in it as it comes closer and closer.

You know what to do. The thought comes unexpected and unwelcome. Would you kill if your life depended on it?

The answer is usually a maybe.

"Depends on the situation."

"I don't know."

The real answer is yes. Because the scariest part of our humanity is the animalistic need for survival.

So you strike.

Killing a person is way different. Way worse.

Your first human kill will probably be someone you know.

Maybe your sister was bit and she’s begging you to not let her turn into one of those monsters. Maybe your best friend couldn't handle what survival meant and had gone crazy, forcing you to put them out of their misery.

Maybe it's a stranger attacking you in the woods, trying to do unspeakable horrors to your body and you can't do...

Anything.
Other.
Than.
Survive.

So it’s what you do.
