logical fallacies

Summary:

Annette and Felix have an argument. Neither plays fair.

Written for the 2026 FE ArtScuffle.

Notes:

For chillydeer for the artscuffle! She wanted a mid-argument kiss. I've written those for serious situations in the past, I'm pretty sure. This is not that!

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

The war council had ended three-quarters of an hour ago, but Felix and Annette had remained behind in the meeting room, presumably so that they had a private space to yell at each other.

“I can’t believe you told the professor it was a bad idea,” Annette said, shaking her quill menacingly at Felix. “Why would you do that?”

“Because it’s a bad idea,” Felix repeated for the fifth time or so. “There are plenty of envoys to the Alliance. Why should we send our best general?”

“Don’t distract me with compliments!” Annette said. “I told you you’re not allowed to compliment me when I’m mad at you.”

“I don’t see why you’re mad at me,” Felix said. “I’m right. You should stay here.”

Annette puffed out her cheeks and waved her quill threateningly at Felix. The effect was, unfortunately, adorable.

“You know what I think?” she said, changing tactics. “I think you’re just jealous. You’re jealous of Claude.”

If she thought she would catch Felix off guard with this, she was sadly mistaken. He glared, but no more than he had before.

“Why would I be jealous of Claude?” he demanded. “He’s good with bows, I guess, but he’s terrible at sword matches. Even with axes, I don’t see why he –”

“You’re jealous of Claude,” Annette interrupted, “Because Claude is emotionally intelligent.”

“I’m emotionally intelligent!”

“No you’re not!” Annette huffed. “And if you were, you would know you weren’t.”

Felix had long suspected that Annette’s chief debate strategy was to introduce a logical paradox so unsolvable that he had no choice but to declare her the winner. The best defense, in these situations, was to change the subject himself.

He took a step closer, braving the quill that Annette was still brandishing with every accusation. Felix uncrossed his arms and leaned a hand against the desk behind Annette, moving closer to her.

“I’m smart enough to know I don’t like it when you’re not nearby,” he said. “And I’m smart enough to know you feel the same.”

Annette looked up at him with a look of pure annoyance, and for a moment, Felix faltered.

“You do, right?” he asked.

Annette reached up and grabbed Felix by the jacket, pulling him in for a kiss.

“I told you,” she said suddenly, pulling away. “That you’re not allowed to seduce me when I’m winning an argument.”

“What about when you’ve already won?” Felix asked.

Annette thought about this for a moment.

“That’s fine, then,” she said, kissing him again.

Luckily, no one would be needing the meeting room for the rest of the day.

Notes:

yaaaay artscuffle was super fun this year! I might try to upload some of the things I wrote but they were all super short so I'll have to see if there's anything good in there. watch this space, don't touch that dial, etc etc. (Side note: I think I wrote a fic about Felix being jealous of Claude for last year's scuffle, too, and it was also the only thing I uploaded? It's because Claude is so handsome and better than Felix in every possible way.)

I also might post some stuff over on Bluesky, so follow me over there if you have one!
