Rinse and Repeat

Summary:

Lilly Mateo had a hard life when she was younger; she was a closeted trans woman with heavy internalized transphobia and misogyny, ran away from home after hurting her mom, and ended up homeless for a while before her life turned around.

What happens when she goes back to the place her life turned around?

Chapter 1: Return

Chapter Text

Lilly had no idea why she was doing this. It was a stupid, broken headset from an old abandoned building. It didn’t mean anything at all. It was fucking stupid.

Years ago, when she was struggling and homeless, she’d found this abandoned building. An office from the 1990s that she slept in for a few nights. It was full of old, clunky computer desktops, the walls beaten down by weather, and plant life taking over everything. She’d decided to explore the building out of curiosity and boredom that night, and that’s when she found the headset. It had the same logo on it as did every computer and wall- C&A. Whatever that meant.

It had been the one thing not destroyed by time, and it was completely out of place in the building.  Modern and sleek compared to the chunky and old school technology all around. She put it on for fun. It hadn’t actually done anything.

So, what was the point of doing it again?

She was doing better now. She had a home, a job, friends who cared about her… But, something deep in the back of her head told her she had to do this.

Her life had taken its positive turn right after she put that broken headset on. Maybe it was just a stupid ritual, but she wanted to do it one more time, just to acknowledge where she came from, and the journey she had taken.

She pushed her hair out of her face and put the headset on.

Lilly opened her eyes. She’d expected the headset not to work, just like the first time, but this time, when she opened her eyes, she was met with a barrage of color. Bright yellows, blues and reds flooded her vision. A gasp distracted her from looking around the virtual reality now surrounding her.

“Oh my God, Jax?” A wobbly voice called out. Lilly looked around, no one was responding to the time, but there was no way this NPC could mean her, right? But then, a pair of arms wrapped around her. She jumped back when she actually felt the hug. That was not how VR worked.

She went to pull the headset up and her hand met not the cool plastic casing she expected, but the fluffy hair of her bangs.
