Work Text:
Footsteps padded down the hall. Loud and insistent like someone was looking for something specific.
The creaking of my door being pushed open followed shortly. I looked up from my desk and raised a brow.
Maka stood in the doorway in shorts and a sports bra, literally nothing else on her besides that. I couldn't blame her. It felt like a sauna in the apartment right now. I myself was shirtless and in an old pair of basketball shorts that had seen better days.
“What?” I blurted out as I raised a brow at her.
“I need your help.” maka crossed her arms as she spoke. Her face painted a very annoyed expression.
“Okay..” I trailed off, confusion written all through my tone. “With what exactly?” I continued after a moment while turning in my chair to face her more. The wheels of the chair slid slightly as I moved.
“I can't reach the box fan in the hall closet, and last time I checked you broke our only ladder.” She pointed an accusatory finger at me.
“Oh my death, it was an accident!” I groaned and rolled my eyes.
“You still broke it!” She yelled out, clearly pissed off already.
“Whatever.” I grumbled as I stood up.
I walked out into the hallway and opened the closet she was talking about. Grabbing the old box fan from the top shelf.
Why'd she have to be so short? I internally groaned again at the thought. She really loved to push my buttons.
“Thank you.” She leaned forward to grab the fan, her hand resting on my back for a second.
I paused. Her hand was on my back. Low on my back.
I glanced at her sideways as she walked away. My body heated up and not just from the summer heat.
She just walked away like it was nothing too. Not even looking at me as she headed into the kitchen.
“What the fuck.” I dragged my hands down my face as I groaned. She had to be messing with me.
I followed after her a few minutes later. She was in the kitchen setting up the fan on the counter to face her while she made a salad.
I leaned against the wall and watched her for a moment. She was all muscle at this point, which was fair considering she had been a meister for years now. And I definitely didn't get lighter.
I pulled myself out of thought when I realized I had been staring. I looked over to the TV to see what she had been watching. Which was some old documentary on soul bonding. How typical.
“Didn't you already watch this one?” I pushed off the door frame and walked over to her.
“Yeah, I just put it on for background noise.” maka mumbled while chopping up some cucumber and carrots. “Just needed noise.” She shrugged lightly.
“Every time you “just need noise” its because you're thinking about something too much.” I grabbed a cucumber slice off the cutting board. “Ive lived with you for 8 years, I know you.”
“Shut up.” She huffed giving me a less than pleasant look. “You don't know everything.” She jabbed a finger to my chest, pushing me back a little.
“Didn't say i did.” I pushed her hand down and raised a brow at her. “Seriously though, you alright?”
She didn't utter a word, just a nod as she turned back to the vegetables. She picked the chopping board up and let the cucumber and carrots fall into the salad bowl.
“Maka.” I scolded as I crossed my arms again. Tilting my head to the side slightly as I looked her over. “I'm being serious, what's up with you?” I pried again.
Maka leaned against the counter, her hands braced on either side of the salad bowl. She was quiet for a moment.
“Y'know the trip we’re going on with the others soon?” She blurted looking over to me for a split second.
“Yeah, the beach trip.” I nodded. “What about it?
“Blackstar rented a beach house, and it has three rooms.” Maka continued before going a bit silent again. “He put us together and won't let us change rooms or anything.”
“Oh.” Was all that left my mouth. We had shared a room before, but that was like 6 years ago now. We hadn't done that since we were kids.
“Yeah.” Maka rubbed at the back of her neck. A habit she had picked up from me.
“Cant be.. that bad.” I mumbled a little awkwardly now.
“We also got the master bedroom. Which only has one bed.” Maka rubbed a hand down her face.
I paused completely at the thought of that. We had slept in the same bed too, but that was even further back then when we last shared a room.
“Im gonna kill him.” I groaned as I leaned against the counter, facing away from maka now. “Im so serious.” I followed up.
“Yeah, I believe you.” maka responded, now sounding slightly amused by my reaction. “Might join you.” She Mumbled under her breath.
“Couldn't blame you.” I sighed. “Who did everyone else end up with?” I looked over to her for a moment.
“Blackstar is with kid, and Tsubaki, liz, and patty are sharing.” Maka hummed. “This is gonna be fun.”
“Yeah, sure is.” I let my head drop to look at the counter under me. “Im heading back to my room.” I blurted.
Maka gave a short nod as she went back to paying attention to her salad. Her hand moved to squeeze mine on the counter before she started stirring the salad.
I paused for a second and looked at her. She has been a lot more touchy lately. Not that I was complaining.
I walked down the hall and into my room quickly. Flopping down onto my bed the moment it was close enough. I buried my face into my pillow for a moment, internally contemplating if this would be the best thing ever or the worst.
It couldn't go that bad? It's not like we were complete strangers to each other. Sure, I still got a little blindsided by maka now. She was grown now, had curves unlike before even if they weren't massive. But she was gorgeous.
She wasn't even the type of girl I thought I would be into. Maka was strong, stubborn, and way too bossy for her own good. Yet here I was feeling like some.. Mutt who was desperate for her attention.
Yeah, i was Royally fucked. Completely fucked.
