Work Text:
Y/n bobbed her head to the music blasting through her headphones as she applied some more eyeliner to where her eyebrows should have been. Y/n had shaved her eyebrows off years ago, saying it was because they got in the way of the makeup she wanted to do.
Y/n was going for her usual makeup, white base, heavy loads of eyeliner. She moved her face closer to the mirror so she could get a better view of herself. It always took her a while to do her makeup, being a perfectionist, and all. She had to wake up way earlier than her roommate and use softer lighting so she didn't wake her up.
After she finished her makeup, she teased her hair and walked over to her closet, picking through her clothes until she found something she liked. Think black lace, flowy sleeves, corset, belts, and loads of silver, drapey jewelry. Y/n buckled her platforms up and draped the skirt over them.
She had been told multiple times that it was kind of overkill for her to get ready like this almost everyday just for class, but y/n liked it. She liked the routine and liked making herself look the way she wanted. Of course, sometimes she went out without the full look, but most people didn't recognize her when she wasn't in her usual attire.
Someone had tried to make fun of her for it once, but y/n shut that shit down quick. One nasty right hook later, and nobody ever tried to mess with her again. She still got stared at, but nobody wanted to find out from personal experience what it was like to get hit by y/n.
So, just three weeks into college, y/n had already established herself as someone you did not make fun of to their face. She also made a few friends, her roommate being among them. She'd originally been a bit worried about being paired with some random person, but those worries were quickly squashed when she met Nobara.
The first time Nobara had seen y/n in her usual attire and makeup, she'd called her gorgeous and asked for eyeliner tips. Needless to say, y/n had no reason to be worried.
Y/n headed out to class with a stuffed bag and a little pep in her step. She was getting her first official assignment to do with her major, fashion design. Y/n was all jittery, excited to finally start designing.
~
The project ended up being simple on paper, but it was not simple to execute. They were told to create a mood-board and sew a wearable garment, a skirt, getting a seven day deadline. Y/n was going through fabric samples, sitting cross-legged on the floor, back hunched over. She pinned and unpinned a few samples, trying to figure out a cute pattern.
"What do you think of this one? Does it give soft grunge?" y/n asked the girl next to her, Aoki.
She knew most of her classmates at that point, and Aoki was very pretty and had a good eye for matching fabrics.
"Hm." Aoki leaned over to look at her messy mood-board. "Yeah, it looks good,"
Y/n nodded and pinned the fabric samples to her board.
~
On y/n's way out of class, she was trying to stuff some fabric samples into her bag when she ran into someone. She stumbled back a bit and slapped her hand on the wall to catch herself. She heard a small yelp and the sound of multiple things clattering to the ground, making y/n looked up quickly. She saw a guy already bending down to pick up the things that had spilled out of his bag.
"Oh my god! I am so sorry," y/n said, also bending down quickly to help him pick up his stuff.
She continued to pick up his pencils, why did he have so many pencils? She observed the fact that his hands looked... very nice. Pale skin, veins popping when he flexed his lithe fingers. Y/n looked up after holding out the handful of pencils she'd collected, eyes widening subtly. This guy was cute, in a nerdy way. He had black rimmed glasses, a thin scar across his nose, bags under his dark eyes, and messily styled dark hair.
"Uh, i-it's okay," he said quietly.
The clothes he was wearing did little to hide the fact that he definitely had some muscle on his bones.
Ah, y/n had always been into cute nerds.
The guy stood up quickly and awkwardly offered her a hand, which y/n took. Her hand slid into his soft one, and he pulled her up easily before quickly letting go. The tips of his ears were red and he looked like he was about to bolt.
Y/n opened her mouth to say something, but the man quickly turned and almost ran away. She pouted to herself and adjusted the straps of her bag on her shoulder before walking to her next class.
~
Y/n sighed loudly and dramatically dropped down in her desk chair. Nobara paused her typing and turned to face y/n, raising a questioning brow.
"What's up with you?" she asked.
"I saw the cutest little nerd today, but he ran away from me before I could ask for his name," she groaned.
Nobara turned her chair around, a grin slipping onto her face. "You like nerds?"
"So much," she said. "he was- just- ugh!" she threw her hands up. "I need to find him."
"What'd he look like?" Noabra asked curiously.
"Dark hair and eyes, pale, looks like he barely sleeps." Y/n spun around in her chair. "He had this scar across the top of his nose, too," she said, running her finger across the bridge of her nose and part of her cheeks.
Noabra's eyes widened and she whipped out her phone, fingers flying across the screen before she stood and quickly made her way over. She shoved her phone in y/n's face.
"Is it this guy? Oh my god, please say yes," she said excitedly.
Y/n's eyes crossed briefly before focusing on the screen. She perked up and grabbed the phone.
"Oh my god, it is! You know him?" y/n asked, standing up quickly.
"Girl, that is Yuji's older brother," Nobara said, laughing in delight.
"What?! They don't look alike at all," y/n said in disbelief, zooming in on the picture.
She'd met Yuji once. He'd come over to their dorm to bring over some food when Nobara wasn't feeling well. He reminded her of a hyper golden retriever.
"Different dads," Nobara supplied.
"Ah," y/n said, nodding her head.
"Want his number? I'll ask Yuji for it," Nobara asked.
"Please," y/n said desperately.
Nobara took her phone back, and then a few minutes later, y/n was saving Chosos number in her contacts and formulating a message to send him.
"They're so different," y/n said suddenly, fingers hovering over her keyboard. "he was like, so awkward and quiet."
"Yeah, that's Choso." She laughed. "He's never had a girlfriend before, I don't think he's ever even talked to a girl properly."
"I like 'em kind of pathetic like that," y/n grinned, making Nobara snort as she walked back over to her desk to sit down.
Y/n turned her chair around and rest her elbows on the desk, her bell sleeves falling down her forearms slightly as she bit the inside of her cheek. She slowly typed out her message, read it over, then hit send.
She sighed and leaned back in the chair. It took all of five minutes before she got a response.
Y/n was not embarrassed at how fast she clicked the notification.

Getting to know Choso was easier than she'd thought, but only if they conversed through text. Trying to have a conversation with him in person was... a little difficult. However, y/n was not a quitter.
Choso was cute, scarily smart, and adorably awkward. Slowly, it became easier to talk with him face to face, but Choso still got flustered very easily and y/n couldn't help but tease him sometimes.
She learned he was majoring in computer engineering, and y/n thought it made sense. She'd smooth talked her way into his dorm one night and sat on his bed watching him code with a focus that she recognized, because it was exactly what she was like when she was zoned in on a sewing project.
She'd wanted to ask Choso out, but then midterms hit her like a ton of bricks, and she needed to, unfortunately, spend time away from him to focus. They still texted, but he was also busy with his midterms, buried in layers of coding that y/n could not bring herself to understand.
She also had a personal vendetta against his fashion sense, which was, to say the least, terrible. She'd been trying to hint at it subtly at first, but after two weeks, she just came out with it and said his clothes were a personal offence to her, and then she'd picked through his closet while he sat on the bed with his legs crossed under himself. It wasn't that the clothes itself were inherently bad, it was how he paired them together.
Y/n spent three hours pairing outfits together and making him try them on, and Choso did it all without complaint, even if his face was a little red.
After their midterms were over, y/n was determined to get her date with Choso. It had been easy to tell that he also had a crush on her, so she wasn't afraid he'd say no, but it was still a little nerve wracking to be the first to ask. Although, she knew that if she didn't ask, she would keel over and die from old age before he asked her out.
So, after her classes were finished, y/n headed over to his dorm, full of determination.

Chosos life had gone in... a direction he hadn't expected when he started college. He'd expected to be pretty much friendless and move through college like a ghost, graduating with perfect grades and go on to his dream job, but that was not what happened.
It had started that way, but his expectations were quickly derailed the day he bumped into the most beautiful woman he had ever seen in his life. Her makeup and outfit had intrigued him, and the way her soft, slightly raspy voice apologized when she'd knocked the contents of his bag out onto the floor had made him lightheaded.
So, he'd ran away, like a coward.
But, to his surprise, only an hour later, he received a text from Yuji saying some goth looking girl was asking for his number through Nobara. Then, only a few minutes later, an unknown number texted him with a few smiley emoticons and introducing herself as y/n, the girl he'd bumped into earlier.
He'd stared at his phone like it was lying to him for all of two minutes before using the next three minutes to formulate a response.
Choso had never really... talked to a girl before. The most he'd had was short, three word conversations in high school during group projects, in which he ended up doing all the work and his partners coasted off of his help.
Choso had half expected y/n to ghost him after getting to know him, but to his surprise, she didn't. No matter how awkward or quiet he was, y/n just kept showing up.
Choso had never given much thought to his type in women before, but after meeting y/n, he had to admit to himself that maybe the reason he'd never given much thought to the other girls in high school was because none of them looked like her, or treated him so kindly.
The first time he saw her without makeup, he was surprised, because he always thought she was beautiful, but she was a whole different kind of beauty without makeup. He liked her regardless of if she was wearing makeup or not, but he honestly hadn't recognized her at all. She'd showed up at his door with an armful of snacks, wearing only fuzzy pj pants and a shirt with a wide neckline that slipped off her shoulder.
He'd nearly passed out when she'd told him who she was and shouldered her way inside, demanding a movie night.
Of course, she also teased the hell out of him sometimes, but it wasn't in a mean way, more so like she was... flirting with him. Which, he didn't really believe at first when he'd told Yuji about it, but his little brother had insisted y/n was into him.
Choso had a hard time believing that at first, until Yuji almost knocked him upside the head and told him that y/n wouldn't have asked for his number just to be his friend.
And, well, he couldn't really argue after that.
That brought him to where he was now, in his dorm, wearing a hoodie, headphones, and some sweatpants. He was lucky enough to have a single, so he didn't have to bother trying to keep his keyboard clacking to a minimum.
Choso heard a faint noise, so he slipped one of his headphones off his ear, and heard a knock at his door. He put his headphones aside and slid off the bed, heart rate ticking up. He knew it was y/n, she was the only one who came knocking on his door. Yuji just barged in when he came over.
He slowly pulled the door open, and saw y/n standing there, in her full face and layered black clothes.
Y/n leaned against the doorframe, looking him in the eye. With her platforms, they were the same height, so it was easy.
"Hi," she said, smiling.
"Hi," he replied, a little shy.
"I came here for one reason," she started, crossing her arms over her chest.
"What is it?" he asked, swallowing thickly.
"To ask you out on a date."
Choso nearly choked on his own spit. "O-oh."
"So, yes or no?" She quirked a meticulously drawn on brow at him.
"Y-yes," he said embarrassingly quick.
"Good." She leaned over and pecked his cheek, leaving a faint black outline of her lips there before she turned and walked away, heart thumping hard in her chest.
Choso stood frozen in his doorway for a full minute before he could finally move and close the door. He touched his cheek and felt the lipstick there, confirming what had just happened was real, and not, in fact, a dream nor hallucination.
~
Choso and y/n agreed on a movie date two days later, which was today. Y/n got ready with her usual makeup and a pretty outfit. She fixed her hair and did a spin.
"How do I look?" she asked.
Nobara and Yuji looked up from her bed. "Stunning, as always."
Yuji smiled wide and gave two enthusiastic thumbs up. "You look awesome!"
Y/n smiled and grabbed her phone, stuffing it in her bat shaped purse. Yuji had come over for a movie night of his own with Nobara, so they were sitting on her bed watching some weird movie that y/n did not even want to try and understand.
There was a soft knock on the door, and y/n felt all jittery as she moved to open it. There Choso stood, dressed in an outfit y/n distinctly remembered picking out of his closet as 'date attire' a few weeks prior. What caught her eye more, was the flowers he shyly held out to her. Y/n lit up and gently took the flowers from him.
"Thank you." She smiled, getting a cute smile in response.
"You're welcome." He shifted from foot to foot. "You look b-beautiful,"
Nobara plucked the flowers from y/n's hands and Yuji pushed y/n out the door gently with a wink thrown over her shoulder at Choso.
"Go, i'll put these in some water," Nobara said, closing the door behind them.
Y/n laughed softly while Choso rubbed the back of his neck nervously. Y/n reached up and freed his hand from his neck, smiling as she interlocked their fingers.
"Ready to go?" she asked.
Choso nodded quickly and gently tugged on her hand to lead her out of the dorm building.
"What movie are we seeing?" she asked, following along and ignoring the stares they were getting.
"The new horror movie you've been talking about," he answered.
Y/n lit up again and started to babble on about her favourite movies on the walk to the theatre. Choso was listening, trying to remember every detail that made her talk more animatedly. Choso was also a big fan of horror movies, so they talked back and forth about the topic. He was still a little shy, and quiet about it, but y/n didn't mind.
After getting to the theatre and buying the tickets, the pair stood in line to get food.
"What do you usually get?" y/n asked, swinging their joined hands lightly.
"Sour gummy worms," he answered.
"I like f/c," he said as they moved up in the line.
Choso ordered them popcorn, drinks, and the two aforementioned candies. The pair hurried to the theatre room and found decent seats before settling in.
In true cliche fashion, their hands touched any time they both went for the popcorn, and Choso blushed every time. Y/n found it disgustingly endearing and decided she'd very much like to see him all red more often.
The movie was good, and it had a freaky twist at the end that shocked both y/n and Choso so much that they were still talking about it when they left the theatre.
"I just can't believe it," Choso said in disbelief.
"I know!" Y/n threw her hands up as they walked down the sidewalk.
They talked back and forth the whole walk to the park, and y/n was sure she'd never heard him speak so much.
~
Y/n sat down on one of the swings, kicking her legs lightly. "Push me,"
Choso smiled and walked up behind her, placing his hands on her back as he pushed her gently. The moment was quiet, just the sound of gentle wind and the swing chains rattling. Y/n jumped off the swing after a minute and wobbled slightly, falling into Chosos side. He wrapped his arms around her waist to keep her upright.
"Are you okay?" he asked.
"Mhm." She looked up at him, causing their noses to almost touch. "I'm having a lot of fun," she murmured, voice soft.
Choso swallowed hard. "Y-yeah, me too,"
Y/n leaned in further, brushing their noses together, eyes flicking up to meet his. Choso licked his lips nervously, and y/n finally closed the distance. Their eyes slowly slipped shut, heads tilting better to accommodate their lips.
The kiss didn't last very long, but it was enough to have Choso breathing heavy, black lipstick smeared slightly across his lips.
Y/n grinned and reached up, swiping her thumb across his lips. "Oops,"
Choso turned bright red, hands tightening on her hips. That was his first kiss, and as far as first kisses go, he thought it was pretty damn good.
