Broken souls

Summary:

"You know, you're the first person in my life who saw me as a person and not as a weapon."

Notes:

I love Reze and how complex she is as a character and as a person as well, so I write about her a lot. This was a complete comfort fic for me. I hope you enjoy this alternative ending!!!!!

Work Text:

"Just come with me. Let's escape together, Denji."

He looked straight into Reze's eyes, and what he saw convinced him. Reze had a hopeful gaze on her face, as if begging him to accept. Denji really wanted to be with her; he liked Reze not as a weapon, but as a human being.

Denji thought for a little while before answering, but he finally gave a response.

"Let's do it. I like you, Reze."

The fireworks started illuminating the clear sky while they looked at each other with a spark in their eyes.

Reze knew that this was her opportunity to be happy—something she had never been.

And for Denji, this was his chance to live his dream, to be with someone who genuinely loved him.

Reze's cold hands reached for Denji's, her lips getting closer to his.

They kissed to the loud but beautiful sound of fireworks in the background.

They were alone with their hopes.

One of Reze's hands caressed Denji's cheek while her tongue moved inside his mouth, and Denji's hand rested on Reze's hips.

At that moment, both with their eyes closed, they felt what they had been searching for.

One of them felt that someone liked him for who he was, and the other felt her humanity for the first time in a very long time.

After the long, passionate kiss, both started running to go far away, to a place where no one could ever find them.

Reze took Denji to a secret passage only she knew. It was dirty and smelled like shit, but it was the only way to escape.

"Where are we going?" Denji asked.

"To a safe place."

She was willing to do everything she had to to be free and live like a normal person. She was tired of fighting and killing others.

Her eyes started watering at the mere idea of having that type of life, without any major worries.

That thought gave her the strength to keep going. Reze was determined to continue. They kept crawling through the passage for six hours straight. Their arms and legs were tired, and their bodies were starving.

They came out into a perfect, colorful meadow just as the sun was rising, bringing the first rays of light of that day. Both broken souls stared at that beautiful landscape for a while.

"Imagine if we could see this sky every day."

"That would be great," he responded.

Reze walked through the fresh, long grass that touched their knees. They were aware that the Soviet Union and Makima would definitely go after them, so they had to make a plan to escape without fighting. Reze and Denji were very strong, but they wouldn't have been able to defeat both opponents.

"We have to make a plan for us to escape safely," Reze said.

"True, but I don't have any ideas."

"Let me think a little bit."

"..."

"I know. The URRS would do anything to get me if they were aware that I'm alive, but it would be different if they thought i was dead. The Soviet Union doesn't care about me as a person; they just want me to be their weapon. So, if they think I'm dead, they're just going to let another Soviet weapon do the job. But if Makima believes it and  sees my fake dead body, she will think that you were caught by the URRS. By the time they realize it was all a trap, it will be too late."

"It's a good idea. I like it."

Nearby was an old town that had just 5,000 people, but it was enough to find someone physically similar to Reze.

They continued walking faster to reach the town, where they first ate something. They were starving because they hadn't eaten anything since the night before.

They saw a ramen spot near the entrance of the town. When they sat down, the waitress took their orders and went to the kitchen to bring them their ramen.

"Thank you for the food," Reze said, once Denji had already tried the food.

He put the chopsticks down and waited for Reze to start with her meal. They ate in peace, looking through the window.

"So, the plan is to find someone similar to you, kill her, burn her body, and then put some bombs around her to make it look like it's you, right?"

"Yes, that's correct," Reze said, laughing as she listened to Denji trying to explain the plan. "You look so silly and funny when you're thinking."

"Really?"

"Yes, hahahahahaha."

When they had finished eating, they started scouting the people of the town.

They walked for three hours until they found a girl very similar to Reze. She was almost the same height, had the same body type, and had very similar eyes. Her hair wasn't purple, but that didn't  matter—it would be burned anyway.

Reze needed to take her to a remote place where no one could see her killing the girl.

She waited patiently for the girl to separate from her friend group. When she was alone, already returning home, Reze got close.

"Please, please, help me. My cat is lost."

The girl, willing to help, asked what the cat looked like.

"It's all white. Come with me so I can show you the last place I saw it."

Reze and the girl ran to a very small but deep alley.

"Here it is."

And then, Reze stabbed the girl to kill her.

"I'm sorry, but it was necessary," she said to the girl, with a fake smile on her face.

Denji came out of the corner where he was hiding.

"Are you ready**?**"

"Yes, just give me a moment."

She felt guilty. The girl had people who cared for her, who loved her, and Reze had to end her life. But there was no time to doubt; she transformed herself into the Bomb Devil to burn the body.

Reze tried not to make any noise or a big explosion, just a little one to make the corpse unrecognizable.

"That's enough."

Then she put the body with some bombs in the meadow they had been in before. She could do that because of how fast she was when using her devil powers.

"You're already here? How fast!"

"Yes, that's what I've been trained for. To be strong."

Reze transformed again into her human form.

"I know where the nearest train station is. Let's go there."

"Good for me."

They ran as fast as they could to get to the station. The sun was already disappearing and the temperature started to go down. Reze, with her white t-shirt and her shorts, held Denji's hand. Both were happy, smiling as if the world belonged to them. They felt safe, even despite the real danger.

"Here it is, the station."

They approached the ticket office.

"Hello, where is the furthest place from here that we can go by train?"

"You could go to the Kagoshima prefecture, but you would have to take two trains."

"It's okey, we will buy them."

"Perfect then."

Reze paid for the tickets and then they waited for the train to arrive. They were sitting on an old bench, side by side, with Reze's head on Denji's shoulder.

"Look at that star. It's beautiful, don't you think so?"

"Yes, it is, but it's not as beautiful as you."

Reze looked at Denji, on the verge of tears. Nobody had ever said that to her.

"You know, you're the first person in my life who saw me as a person and not as a weapon. This time that I've been with you has been the best time of my life. You make me feel human."

The train arrived and they stepped on it together to escape forever. And that's how, after eight hours of traveling, they arrived at that isolated island.
