Work Text:
Melissa King did not do things for herself. When she was younger, she did what her parents and teachers expected of her. She always did her homework, was respectful and polite to others, and strived for excellence.
Once her parents had passed and she became her sister’s full-time caretaker, she did things for Becca. They watched Elf, because that was Becca’s favourite movie. They got pizza from Angelo’s, even though Mel preferred Sal’s Pizzeria because Becca didn’t like their crust. They even took the long way through the park on their way home from Middle Hill because Becca liked to go past the duck pond, even though Mel’s feet would be killing her after work. But still, she persisted. She loved her sister and would do anything for her; it was who she was raised to be.
Consequently, this meant Mel was nearing 30 and had no idea who she was as a person, outside of her sister and her job at PTMC. She loved medicine, and she loved her sister, but she didn’t really know what else she liked outside of that.
That was, until she met Frank.
After their second shift together on the fourth of July, the pair had become somewhat of a dynamic duo. More often than not, they could be found working the same cases, sharing a break in the staff lounge, or taking a moment outside in the ambulance bay. It had become a running joke among the Pitt that if you saw one of them, the other couldn’t be far behind. Nobody could dispute that they worked well together; they had some of the highest success rates and patient satisfaction scores when paired together.
Naturally, their working relationship started to bleed into their personal lives.
It started with a ride home.
Three months after their fourth of July reunion, Frank was gathering his belongings from his locker, tucking his spare hoodie in his colourful backpack, while Mel checking something on her phone beside him.
“Shoot,” she murmured under her breath. When Frank looked towards her, he noticed she had scrunched her nose in frustration. She always did that, and he always thought it was adorable.
“What’s wrong? Is Becca okay?”, he asked, concerned.
“Oh, um, it’s fine, Becca’s fine, the bus I was supposed to take is cancelled so I’ll just have to wait for the next one”
“Do you want a ride? I really don’t mind, I’m sure you’d like to get home sooner than later”, he offered with a soft smile.
“Oh! Um, no thank you, that’s fine I can wait, I’m sure you want to get home to your family”, she could feel the blush travelling up her neck and across her cheeks and she looked down to her feet. She gripped her hands together firmly in front of her, watching as her knuckles turned white.
Frank let out a small, almost imperceptible chuckle, but she noticed. She looked over at him questioningly and saw he had matching red cheeks himself. He winced before reaching an arm to awkwardly scratch the back of his neck,
“Uh, not really. I haven’t really told anyone yet, but Abby and I got divorced a few months ago. She has the kids this week, so I’m not really in much of a rush to go back to my lonely apartment. Honestly, letting me drive you home would probably be doing me a favour”.
He couldn’t bring himself to look at her, deciding to stare down towards his feet instead. God, this was embarrassing, he thought to himself.
Mel was certain she was in shock. She had certainly not been expecting that confession when she mentioned his family. Suddenly, she began to connect the dots in her mind. Pieces of their conversations were starting to make more sense to her, especially how his stories never seemed to mention his wife. Ex-wife.
Mel thought about Abby more than she probably should, and the threshold was particularly low, considering she was her coworkers’ wife.
But was Frank really just a coworker? They were inseparable when they were on shift together, they texted and called most nights and had met for coffee on multiple occasions when they both had the day off. Certainly, they were friends at this point? Honestly, he might even be her best friend apart from Becca.
The problem was, as hard as she tried Mel didn’t have platonic thoughts about Frank. This is what lead her to thinking of Abby.
Every night when she was drifting off to sleep, allowing her mind to wander, her thoughts always lead to Frank. She thought of his hands, strong and careful, and the way his biceps peaked out from under his scrub top. She also thought a lot about his mouth. How it would feel on hers, on her throat, on her aching nipples, on her…
But then, through her lust-filled haze, she would remember his wife and kids. He was happily married, and he would never leave his wife for someone like her.
She was brave enough to admit to herself she had a bit of a crush on him. Ignoring the fact that he was devastatingly handsome, which anyone with eyes could see, she liked how he made her feel. Safe, taken care of, loved. He was patient with her, and slowly but surely was becoming a pillar in her life.
Sure, he was taken. Still, she could dream.
Except, it wasn’t a dream anymore. He wasn’t married.
Every conversation, look, and touch raced through her mind. She had thought she was going crazy. Maybe he was just flirtatious by nature, maybe he didn’t realize he was affecting her the way he did. But a small part of her considered in this moment, that maybe, they had actually meant something to him to, maybe he was doing it on purpose.
“Oh!”, she managed to squeak out, breaking the thick silence permeating the air. He finally looked up and met her gaze and couldn’t help but notice the softness of her features, a look of care and affection he never could have anticipated.
“Frank, I’m really sorry, I’m sure that must have been hard for you to process by yourself”
He thought he was dreaming. He had expected pity, quite honestly. That was usually how this conversation ended for him. He should have known better, this was Mel after all. Sweet, kind, Mel, who sees the best in everyone despite their downfalls. It was what had drawn him to her in the first place after all.
“Thanks, Mel, that’s really kind of you to say, but I promise I’m okay. Honestly, it was a long time coming. We got married when she got pregnant with Tanner and I think we probably only made it as long as we did because we thought we were doing what was best for the kids. We hadn’t loved each other like that in a long time, but I think we’re finding out we make much better co-parents and friends than partners”, he finished with a chuckle to himself.
He watched as she processed the information, before humming to herself and responding,
“That makes sense. I’m glad to know that it was mutual for the both of you, but I’m sure it must have still been stressful. How are the kids doing?”.
“I’ll be honest, it was tense for a while, but we’re definitely through the thick of it now. The kids seem to be coping well, so far they really like the idea of going to ‘Dad’s place’”, he smiled fondly. “If you really want to reduce my stress levels, though, you’ll let me drive you home”, he added with a wink.
Mel couldn’t help the blush that rose to her cheeks, before subsequently rolling her eyes playfully, “Fine, but I’m picking the music”.
“Whatever you want, Mel”, he said fondly before placing a hand on the small of her back and guiding her out of the locker room and towards the staff parking lot.
Mel couldn’t help but notice the affection in his eyes as he spoke to her. Like his statement didn’t just apply to the music. Maybe she wasn’t going crazy after all…
✦✦✦
As they rounded the corner to her apartment, Mel felt nervous. Ever since Frank’s confession, she had been seeing their interactions in a new light. The way he had kept a gentle, guiding hand on her lower back the entire walk to his car, the way he opened the passenger door for her to get in before moving around to his side, the way his gaze lingered on her a little too long every time he stopped at a red light…
She had decided that when they got to her place, she would invite him up. The worst he could do was say no, and she would have the day off tomorrow to wallow in self-pity before she saw him again. Mel wasn’t particularly good at picking up on social cues, but she liked to think she knew Frank, and maybe, she wasn’t entirely misreading this situation for once in her life.
Suddenly, Frank was pulling up at the curb outside her apartment, and all of her confidence seemed to leave her body. Then, he reached a hand on the headrest behind her as he was reversing to park, and she felt her entire body flush. She was certain that if he moved his gaze an inch to the left he would be able to see how red her entire face had become from his proximity.
Once the car was completely stopped, he looked over at her with that same fond look from before in his eyes and smiled. She could feel herself melt into the seat of his car when he smiled at her with that look in his eyes. Honestly, as far as she was concerned, he shouldn’t even be allowed out in public with a face like that. Criminal.
“Would you want to, um, maybe come inside? I know you said you don’t really want to go home, and Becca isn’t here tonight, so maybe we could order dinner? Watch a movie?”, she rushed out. She knew she would lose her nerve if she held off any longer and just hoped he didn’t pick up on how nervous she was.
She watched his features shift as he processed her proposal. She fought back the urge to wince in anticipation of his response.
“Yeah, Mel, I’d love to”, he said after a beat, and smiled. She couldn’t help but grin at his agreement, and started to gather her belongings and unbuckle, before getting out of the car, him following suit beside her.
Together, they made the trek to her apartment.
This would become their new routine when their schedules allowed, their friendship blossoming within the walls of Mel’s tiny apartment. Some nights they would talk, other nights they would simply just enjoy each other’s company, until one night, she finally kissed him.
And ever since then, Mel has been embracing the idea of doing things for her. Because that’s what lead to her relationship with Frank, and she could never regret how that worked out for her.
✦✦✦
In January of the new year, Mel had decided she was going to find out who she was. Her and Frank had been officially dating for just over a month when she mentioned her resolution to him,
“I think I’m going to find my hobby this year”, she had declared that morning during a lazy shared-day-off Sunday brunch.
“That’s a great idea, sweetheart, what do you have in mind?”, Frank said in between bites from where he was perched at the dining table beside her.
“I think I’m going to try going to a ballet class! I saw an ad for it while I was waiting for Becca at Middle Hill and thought it could be fun. I think I want to do something physical, Becca and I have done our fair share of crafting, and I think it’s safe to say that’s her hobby and not mine”, she explained with a laugh to herself, noting how attentively Frank seemed to be listening to her, nodding along and considering every word she spoke.
“That sounds like fun, when would you start? Also, should I be preparing for full leotard and tutu? Or is that just Penny’s classes?”, he asked with a boyish smirk.
“Well, I certainly wouldn’t get your hopes up if I was you”, she said with a wink.
I can flirt, too, she thought to herself with a proud smile.
“Classes start next Saturday, and Becca has plans with Adam, so I won’t have to worry about her”, she added. He nodded, throwing her a lazy smile and reaching over to give her knee a gentle squeeze with his free hand, his thumb tracing absentminded circles over the fabric of her sweatpants.
“Sounds great, honey, I’m happy for you”
Mel smiled back. She felt happy for her too.

Week One
Abby considered herself to be a graceful person. She remained graceful when she accidentally got pregnant during undergrad, resulting in her and Frank’s shotgun wedding. She also kept that same grace when her husband admitted he was a drug addict and went to rehab, leaving her to take care of both of their young children by herself.
If she could navigate all of that with her dignity mostly intact, she figured she could manage a beginner ballet class.
And honestly, she was in desperate need of a hobby. With her and Frank finally establishing a stable shared custody agreement of their kids, she was finding herself with a lot more free time than she knew what to do with.
Naturally, she started baking. Ever since she was in high school, she had taken all of her frustrations out in the kitchen. When she got a C- on her pre-algebra test? She had made a key lime pie from scratch to soften the blow. When her first college boyfriend cheated on her with her best friend? She made enough chocolate chip cookies for her roommate to think she was dropping pre-law to open a bakery.
Safe to say, she was going through flour quicker than any reasonable person should. If having been married to a doctor taught her anything, having all of the sugar around the house was probably not great for her health, or her children’s. Not only was she a stress-baker, but she was also a stress-eater.
So, when she stumbles across an advertisement for adult ballet classes while waiting to pick Penny up from her lesson, she thinks to herself, Why the hell not?
That’s how she ends up standing in front of the mirror in the same ballet studio her daughter has class in Tuesday evenings, clutching a container of a homemade blueberry muffins (with crumble, thank you very much, she wasn’t an animal).
After putting the muffins on a table at the back of the room, she moves to claim a spot at the far end of the barre. She didn’t think she was going to fail miserably at this, but she also didn’t want to be in the center of the room for everyone to see if she did. She’s settling into her space, when she catches the face of the woman staking her claim in the prime real estate beside her.
Why does she look so familiar?
She’s trying to place how she recognizes her, running her gaze along her blonde hair, brown eyes, and soft features, when it suddenly dawns on her. Dr. Melissa King. She’s the woman from the wallpaper of Frank’s phone.
Honestly, this is just her luck. Only she would end up taking a ballet class with her ex-husband’s new girlfriend. She realizes she’s been staring too long, when Mel suddenly looks over, meeting her lurking gaze.
“Hi! My name’s Melissa, but everyone calls me Mel! You brought the muffins, right? They look really good!”
Oh my god.
Abby quickly realizes that Mel has absolutely no idea who she is. Oh, this is going to be fun, she thinks to herself. She can’t help but smile to herself before she replies,
“Hey, it’s really great to meet you! And yeah, I’m guilty of the muffins, I bake when I’m stressed”, she finishes with a chuckle.
Mel laughs, and they launch into conversation about what lead them to joining the class. Maybe she should have told Mel her name, but where’s the fun in that? She would pay good money to see Frank’s reaction when he finds out that she and Mel know each other. She still liked her ex-husband, but truly, where was the harm in her having a little bit of fun? Did she not deserve that after everything?
As her and Mel start getting to know each other, talking about their jobs and families, Abby can’t help but understand how her entire family has become so fond of this woman; she really is wonderful.
Am I in love with her too?, she thought to herself with a small smile. She was just so downright adorable.
Suddenly, the instructor claps her hands together, breaking their conversation and drawing the attention of the room as she starts to explain the class and what they’ll be learning.
She can’t help but tilt her head slightly at the teacher as she takes her. She’s wearing a neon orange sports bra, paired with neon green athletic leggings. Well, it certainly wasn’t her style, but she would keep that to herself. She doubted Mel would be the type to engage in that kind of conversation anyways, she seemed way too nice. Still, she noticed the blonde eyeing her suspiciously, before tracking her gaze to the teacher and making a face that Abby could only describe as, I’m thinking the exact same thing.
Halfway through the instructor’s ‘Introduction to Class’ speech, Abby is only half paying attention; she’s simultaneously racking her brain for recipes in her repertoire she thinks Mel would like. She’s determined to befriend the blonde, if it’s the only thing that comes out of this class.
By the time they finish stretching, Abby decides that Mel would love her lemon bars.
✦✦✦
Week Two
Mel walks into her second ballet class with a newfound pep in her step. She had left her class feeling refreshed in a way that she doesn’t think she’s felt since she was a kid. Ballet was specific, and she liked the clear instructions. She also liked the way her body felt after; loose, pliant, and strong.
And if she was excited to see her new friend, who was to say. Mel still couldn’t believe she had managed to speak to someone else in the class, let alone have actual pleasant conversation. As it appears, baked goods are an excellent icebreaker.
She can hardly contain the smile on her face, when she walks into class to see the woman from last class waiting at the back of the room, two Tupperware containers in hand. She reaches up a hand to wave and smiles wider when she sees the redhead match her grin and wave back.
Quickly kicking her shoes off, she begins to make her way over.
“Hey! How’s it going? The double containers are slightly concerning”, she chides playfully. She hopes the woman picks up on her joke; tone is always something she struggles with.
“Hey Mel! It’s good to see you. I’m doing good, no need to worry, one of these is actually for you! I like you enough to not make you share with the rest of the class”, she volleys back, handing the container over.
Mel can’t help but feel her heart warm at the sentiment. She had always struggled to make friends; she always felt like she was putting in effort for someone who didn’t reciprocate her feelings of friendship. To have someone directly tell her they liked her would always be music to her ears. She stares at the container in her hand before she replies,
“Really! You didn’t have to do that, thank you!” She cracks the lid to take a peek inside, “Oh my gosh, are these lemon bars? They’re my favourite! This is seriously so sweet of you!”
“It’s really no problem! I’d rather give them out than be stuck with them at home. I really cannot express how much baking occurs in my kitchen; the amount of sugar I go through is… concerning”, she laughs. As she finishes, they both hear a noise coming from the entrance and see that other people are coming into the room.
“Hey, let’s go get our spots before someone else takes them”, the redhead whispers conspiratorially in Mel’s direction. Both women begin to walk towards the barre and go back to discussing baking.
Mel isn’t even sure how they get there, but suddenly she’s launching into a passionate explanation about medieval agriculture. Much to her surprise, her friend seems just as fascinated as she was when she learned about it for the first time. She doubts the other woman particularly cares planting and harvesting practices, but she listens with such ease, nodding along and asking questions, that Mel can hardly think about stopping any time soon. It’s not often that she speaks to people, apart from Frank and Becca, who listen to her so intently. Part of her is shocked the redhead hasn’t walked away to go find more interesting conversation elsewhere.
Once again, they’re interrupted by the instructor beginning class, but Mel is already thinking about what questions she wants to ask her new friend next (#1, her name, she’s still not sure how she hasn’t managed to swing that one) and secretly trying to deduce what baked good she should be expecting next.
✦✦✦
Week Three
Abby was downright giddy walking into the ballet studio this week. Over the break between classes, she had devised a plan. She wanted to start dropping hints as to who she was. As much as she was enjoying getting to know Mel as friends, she was starting to feel guilty having an upper hand in their friendship.
But even though Abby wanted to just tell her, she had to admit she was still having fun. Which is where her plan comes into place.
Cookies.
They’re probably one of the most shareable desserts. So, if Abby brought Mel two dozen cookies, surely she would have to share. And maybe, if everything went to plan, she would disclose the who.
She was nosy, what can she say.
So that’s how she finds herself standing at the back of the room with two gigantic perfectly normal sized containers of chocolate chip cookies. She had perfected her recipe well before her and Frank were even married; brown butter, chilled dough, flaky salt on top. What kind of amateur would she be if she didn’t have a personal chocolate chip cookie recipe?
Other than her two beautiful, kind, wonderful, children, her cookie recipe was her pride and joy.
She realizes she’s lost deep in thought when she suddenly hears a noise, noticing Mel entering the room. She notes that her and Mel seem to be the only people in this class who are chronically early each week.
“Hey!”, she says grinning at the blonde and waving enthusiastically. She leaves the bigger container of cookies on the table and makes her way over to where Mel is putting her belongings down with her other container in hand.
She watches as Mel lights up at the sight of the container. She’s worried, in the back of her mind, that she’s going to accidentally Pavlov the poor girl and she’ll start drooling at the sight of Abby and Tupperware.
Oh well, not the worst reaction her ex-husband’s girlfriend could have when seeing her.
“I come bearing cookies!”, she says, meeting Mel where she’s standing and handing the container over. She watches smile up at her,
“Oh my gosh this is SO sweet! There’s so many! You really didn’t have to, thank you!”
“You’re so welcome! I’ve really been enjoying your company during class, it definitely helps distract from the pain I’m totally not experiencing”, she jokes before adding, “I also may have realized I never introduced myself, I’m Abigail or Abby – whichever works”, she said with a flush to her cheeks. There never really was a good way to go about introducing yourself so late into knowing someone, but she figured it would be easier for her to tell Mel than to watch the blonde work up the courage to ask. So awkward, she thinks to herself.
“It’s great to meet you Abby, I’m so excited to finally put a name to your beautiful face. Seriously though, this is enough cookies to feed a family. I’ll have to share with my boyfriend and sister”
And there it is.
Abby can’t help the smile that grows on her face at the mention of Mel’s boyfriend. A small voice in the back of her mind saying, I know something you don’t know.
“It’s totally no problem! Let’s go claim our spots at the barre and you can tell me more about this boyfriend of yours”, she says with a wink in Mel’s direction. She watches the flush creep onto Mel’s cheeks, but she follows her anyways.
Could you really say that you wouldn’t do the same if you were in her shoes? She thinks not.
She lets Mel talk about Frank until the beginning of class. And if she makes comparisons between him and her ex-husband…
That’s between her and the barre.
✦✦✦
Week Four
Mel walks into the ballet studio with a confidence she never could have expected when she saw that ad at Middle Hill. She had never expected that the first hobby she tried would bring her so much joy. She really was beginning to understand the merit in this ‘doing things for your own enjoyment’ thing.
As per usual, she walks in the room and immediately spots Abby, container of treats in hand. The woman really was a saint, like Frank had said about her when she had texted him about the cookies. She could feel her mouth watering in anticipation.
“Hey Abby! I swear I’m not just friends with you for your baking, but what do we have this week?”, she jokes with a smile. She wouldn’t want Abby to get the wrong impression of her kindness; she really did enjoy getting to know her each week.
Abby laughs before speaking, “Brownies! I had to make some for my kids’ bake sale, so I figured I’d just go all out and make some for class to”.
“Ooh yum! Thanks again! My boyfriend, sister, and I loved the cookies, I’m sure we’ll love these too. At least, I know Becca will, brownies are her absolute favourite. My boyfriend actually did this thing for our birthday last month, because Becca likes brownies and I like blondies, so he got a tray of each and laid them out in a checkerboard pattern for us like a cake!”, she rambles out. Nobody had ever accused her of being brief.
“Awe that’s adorable! Your boyfriend seems like such a sweet guy!”, Abby gushes. She can’t help the grin that grows on her face, he really was the sweetest, she thought to herself.
(Abby would never tell Mel that the makeshift cake had been her idea; Frank had come to her in a panic the week before the twins’ birthday hoping to get her opinion on the matter, because neither woman was particularly fond of cake – too sweet. She had suggested brownies, and after some deliberation the rest had been history. It may or may not be the reason she had made brownies in the first place).
Mel laughs before she says, “That’s debatable, it definitely depends on your definition of adorable. I think he is, but he’s definitely a huge dork”. She loved Frank, truly, he was so kind and compassionate to her, but she knew that he probably wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea. But that didn’t matter, because he was hers.
Abby laughed, before telling Mel about how her ex-husband was the same way. She appreciated how Abby spoke about her ex-husband; they had had an amicable divorce but still saw each other as they coparented their two young children. Mel was still working up the courage to ask to see a picture of them, she doubted they were as cute as Tanner and Penny, but she was still curious. But Abby always spoke about him positively, how he was a good father and worked hard to make amends after their divorce. It was a refreshing take, after seeing so many hostile couples in the ED.
Her train of thought is broken when Abby speaks, “Hey Mel, do you think I could get your number? Maybe I can let you know when I’m baking and you can make requests? Or we could get coffee sometime?”
Mel can’t help the grin that spreads across her face as she reaches into the pocket of her leggings to grab her phone, opening her contacts and handing it over to Abby. The redhead makes quick work of inputting her number and handing the phone back to Mel.
Mel sends off a quick message to her number, This is Mel!, before pocketing her phone once more and gesturing towards the barre. Both women settle into their spots, before they begin discussing what has happened in their lives between classes.
All the while, Mel can’t help the pride that blooms in her chest, I made a friend!
She smiles for the entire class, and can’t help but notice how sore her cheeks are on her walk home.
✦✦✦
Week Five
Mel wakes up Saturday morning, elated. She’s eager for ballet class, but even more eager to see Abby. The two women had been texting back and forth throughout the last week, forging a friendship beyond the barre.
However, her mood is quickly dampened when she looks down at her phone and sees a text from the aforementioned redhead.
Abby
Hey Mel! I’m so sorry, but my son has a soccer game today and I won’t be able to make it to class!
Mel can’t help but feel a little devastated, but her enjoyment of the class isn’t completely contingent on Abby, so she continues to get ready like normal and head out the door of her apartment to the ballet studio.
And, if she leaves a little bit later than normal, who’s to say?
✦✦✦
By the end of class, Mel embraces the way her body feels. She’s glad to know she can still enjoy the class even though she doesn’t have a funny redhead to keep her company. But it certainly wasn’t as much fun as normal.
On her walk back home, she decided to text Frank and tell him about her day.
Mel
