Chapter Text
Prologue
Everything rang around him. Cries, screams, bombs, they were all drowned out. Wemmbu didn’t even look back, he took another orbital strike and let loose. Another bomb erupts, bodies fly up and come down just as quick. Rapid death messages show up on chat, he just silently turns it off continuing to release more destruction after another.
He flies up, his wings spread up catching the wind flow as he circles around capital city as if it was his prey. He wasn’t supposed to be this detached. He wasn’t supposed to be this used.
Wemmbu perches on a broken piece of arch, he looks down and observes the way the royal guard still fights against cindercrest. A broken laugh breaks free, usually when there is one culprit bombing crowds it should’ve been obvious for the guards to turn on that one person. But here, the royal guard army and cindercrest still fought each other like idiots.
He hears rushed footsteps behind him. Wemmbu doesn’t turn. He knows who's behind him but still he doesn’t turn, his hand tightly gripping the cracking gambit.
“Wemmbu! Bro what do you think you're doing!” Flamefraggs. His rival…his friend. Wemmbu maybe back then would’ve turned and laughed, shrugged and flown away. But this Wemmbu doesn’t do that, he keeps staring at the broken capital city in front of him.
“Stop being a coward and fight me!” Another hesitant laugh is released from Wemmbu, it sounded pathetic more than ever. More footsteps. He still doesn’t turn.
“Wemmbu..why.?” Parrot this time, his grip on Gambit hesitates…weakening. His voice sounded so hurt and maybe just maybe if Wemmbu was any more human he would’ve let out a cry, turned to Parrot and beg for forgiveness. But all Parrot's weak protest only reminded him of what happened..back at the caves. Back with Arachnid…Back at that godforsaken meeting room.
Egg was supposed to stay hidden and safe. Alive. Not dead, lying on the ground with gold blood flowing out of him and the declaration “Eggchan was slain by Yungy” ringing through chat.
His hand shouldn’t have been stained gold. Eggchan was supposed to live with Wemmbu, in a house far away from the main server with a custom pond in the front yard just for him. He was supposed to be there. He can still feel Eggchan's cold body, he can still hear his plea.
“Wemmbu…forgive them. You need to live and forgive.
“No! No no no just wait! Goddamn it wait, Egg…Please just give me a second.”
“Parrot. Shut up.” His words ring out and he finally turns. He turns and sees what he never wanted to see. He sees Flames' furious face, despite the blindfold Wemmbu sees. The furrowed brows, his tight grip on fragger, his tense form. He sees Parrot, his betrayed expression. The pitiful eyes, cowering form, firm grip on his totem.
Then he sees something else. He sees Theo..He sees Lomedy. And suddenly he feels something. Rage. Jealousy. Grief
Suddenly his wings flare out behind him, tail wrapped tightly around his legs, pupils shaped in slits and gambit lighting up. Parrot stumbles back, Theo grits his teeth and shields Parrot. Flame pushes Lomedy away and prepares to attack with Fragger. Watching Parrot and Flame both holding onto their other half makes him nauseous.
Wemmbu wants to scream, he wants to tell them. Tell them that it was their fault. It was their fault he died. But for some reason Wemmbu doesn’t do that.
Maybe it's because he knows the truth. It was his fault all along.
That thought echoes in his head and before he knows it his grip on Gambit finally loosens. The heavy mace lands on the ground with a thud, his hand loosely wrapped around it as an action more as a desperation to ground himself then to attack. His wings weakly relaxes beside him, a physical representation of how mentally ruined Wemmbu feels. His gaze locks onto Parrot, he can see the obvious confusion and hurt. Then Wemmbu's gaze drifts down to his hand, his wings and his mace.
His hand is still stained, layers and layers of red blood but it still doesn’t stop the stench of him. His wings were ruined, tattered and barely attached. It was a miracle they still carried his weight. Something breaks deep inside, the usually kept Wemmbu was now nothing but a mess of dirt and grime. Gambit..oh his poor gambit. Cracking and fraying at each corner, the handle turned from the brown wood to a maroon stained stick.
“...Wemmbu..Please jus-”
“Wemmbu please….”
“-ust talk to me!” “Parrot, stop trying to reason with him! He killed half of Capital city. We can’t for-”
“Forgive them..”
“-give him! Fight me Wemmbu!”
Everything rings out, Wemmbu can’t hear anything. He can’t feel anything. He only sees and remembers. He remembers Jaden's firm grip on his wrist, trying to stop him from leaving. He remembers chasing down Arachnid and Yungy. He remembers killing them. He remembers flying to Capital city. He remembers the orbital strikes, the macing, the totems. Then he sees. He sees the death messages, He sees Flame, Parrot, Theo, Lomedy. He sees them all. The anger, the sadness, the desperation.
What he doesn’t see is Parrot pulling Flame from advancing to Wemmbu. Because as much as hurt fills Parrot he notices everything. He notices Wemmbu's frozen, dazed expression. And then it hits him all at once. The gold specks, below all the layers of blood, glistening on his hand and clothes. He sees the earrings that He had once given to Wemmbu gone from where it used to sway on Wemmbu's earlobe.
Flame tries to break free from Parrot, turning to yell at Parrot to let go before he himself freezes. Confusion fills him, his gaze stuck on Parrot's devastated expression that no longer looked as if it was from the bombed Capital city. Then he turns to Wemmbu, who remains still and quiet. And then it hits him.
It seems it hits all of them, even Theo. Because Flame hears Theo release a low curse under his breath.
For the first time since Wemmbu's bombing of Capital city, silence reigns over the group. Lomedy stumbles back, Theo relaxes his stance and Parrot..Parrot steps forward. Wemmbu still remains..quiet…grieving.
“..Wemmbu..I-” Parrot stumbles over his words, he doesn’t know what to say. He knew the right script, the right words, the right comfort to give to Spoke when he thought Mapicc died. He knew because he understood.
But with Wemmbu..Parrot had nothing. No words, no comfort, no script. Instead Parrot flares his own messed up wings and glides towards the broken off arch that Wemmbu was perched on. He faces the taller end demon. For a second Parrot stared while Wemmbu's eyes drifted towards the floor. Parrot doesn’t say anything, he just slowly wraps his arms around Wemmbu's thin form. Wemmbu eyes widen slightly, he bites his lips as a futile attempt to stop himself from sobbing.
He doesn’t even wrap his own arms around Parrot..because he doesn’t intend to stay for long.
“I’m sorry…I’m so sorry Parrot..” “I know Wemmbu..”
“No..no you need to understand…this wasn’t supposed to happen..” Wemmbu whispers out, his voice carrying a type of emptiness Parrot never heard before. Confusion lights up Parrots face, especially when Wemmbu lets out a wet laugh.
“Can you tell Minute about his death? Please…an-and tell him to take care of his books.Tell him please..”
Parrot then realizes, he realizes a second too late. Flame and Theo yells out, Parrot tries to grip the falling body as fast as he could but he is never fast enough for Wemmbu. Wemmbu had pushed Parrot before he fell.
He should’ve seen it coming.
