skatepark skill differential

Summary:

"Hey Taichi."

"Yeah?"

"Are you showing off for that guy over there again?"

Notes:

Inspired by Waggle's omitai art, I love it so much and this one just gave me a skaters vibe ♥

Work Text:

"Yuki-chan! Yuki-chan!! Yuki-chan, look!!!"

"Aha …" Yuki rolled his eyes, fixing the wheels on his skateboard as Taichi zoomed past him, up over the half-pipe edge and back down the other way.

"How high was that!?"

"Pretty high."

"Higher than last time?"

"No clue, didn't see that. I'm kinda busy here, you know?

"Okay! I'll do it again!!"

"I swear …" Yuki sighed, turning his attention to Taichi again.

"WoooOOOOO! Hell yeah!"

… sure, that was pretty high.

"Wait, lemme do it again! WOOOOOO!!!"

Dangerously high.

Yuki narrowed his eyes, casting a glance to the other side of the skatepark, and sure enough … that guy was here again.

"Hey Taichi."

"Yeah?"

"Are you showing off for that guy over there again?"

"W-W-W-What!? Yuki-chan!!! D-Don't point at- aaaaAAA, don't! That's embarrassing!! Yuki-chaaaaaan!!!"

"Ah, so you're not showing off for that guy over there?" Yuki gestured in the guy's direction again, only somewhat hiding his grin.

"Nooooo! Yuki-chan, pleeeeeease!!!" Taichi pleaded with him, nervously looking over his shoulder and hoping no one noticed.

Not Yuki, at least. But if someone noticed Taichi being all cool and stuff, that'd be fine! That'd be totally fine!!

Still, it hadn't happened yet. Probably because that guy was really good, and Taichi was kinda new at this … he probably looked lame most of the time … but that's fine, he'd keep trying! At least Yuki was with him for moral support … or the exact opposite sometimes.

"A-Anyway! I'll try that jump again! It's cool, isn't it?"

"I guess."

"… hey, Yuki-chan?"

"Aha?"

"It'd be cooler on the, uhm … the bigger half-pipe over there, wouldn't it?"

"The bigger half-pipe where that guy is sitting?"

"The only bigger half-pipe!"

"Ah, that one? Yeah, sure. It'd be cooler to jump there, I guess," Yuki shrugged.

"Okay! You're so right!! I'll go there then!!!"

"He is absolutely showing off," Yuki huffed to himself as Taichi skated away. "I swear, he's gonna get himself hurt one of these days …"

Well, but he couldn't really say that he didn't understand where Taichi was coming from at least a little bit. The guy was pretty cute … seemed pretty cute? It was hard to tell, because Taichi would begin hyperventilating if anyone even suggested going close enough to get a better look - so Yuki didn't. But from a distance, the guy seemed alright? Pretty cautious … probably had to be: as tall as he was, his center of balance was probably pretty awkward. Still, Yuki had never seen him fall - and they'd been watching him a lot. But he did seem to always have bandaids on hand for when one of his buddies scraped their knees. Sometimes they mocked him for it, but he seemed to take that in stride … and somehow still managed to convince the idiots to put the damn bandaid on their wounds.

Seemed like a responsible guy at least. Not bad for Taichi, not bad at-

"AaaaaAAAAA- !!!"

… not bad at all, Yuki grinned as he watched Taichi's epic fail of a jump that somehow resulted in him landing right in the guy's lap.

"Woah, are you okay?"

"… a-aa… e-eh…."

"I think he's fine," Yuki rushed over to help before Taichi said anything stupid.

"Oh, you're his friend, right?"

"Mhm. Sorry about that, he's kind of an idiot."

"No, that's fine," the guy smiled, still holding Taichi by his shoulders. "I've been watching you guys- ah, I mean … you're still learning, right?"

"Pretty much."

"Then you really shouldn't skate on the big one."

"Yeah, I told him."

"Wha- but- Yuki-chan- you said- ???"

"Oh noooo, Taichi, what is it?" Yuki faked concern. "You're never speechless, was the fall that bad? He must have gotten scared, poor thing …"

"Oh … that's okay," the guy awkwardly smiled, putting his arms around Taichi. "See? It's okay, I caught you … Taichi-kun."

"A-A-Ahhh …. hi!!! T-Thank you, a-ahhh … ?"

"I'm Omi."

"Thank you, Omi-san!!!"

"Ah, you're welcome … are you okay?"

"Yeah yeah yeah yeah! I'm-"

"Not so fast," Yuki practically shoved him back down into Omi's lap as Taichi tried to stand up.

"Huh?"

"I saw that, your foot slipped pretty bad," Yuki crouched down, grabbing Taichi's ankle. "Hmm … mhm, yeah, it is exactly as I feared - this is at least a strained muscle! You absolutely can't walk on this or it might become a sprain!"

"What? But I feel fine …"

"Must be the adrenaline," Yuki shrugged, standing back up. "Absolutely no walking!"

"… o-okay? But then-"

"Omi-san, if you wouldn't mind- he lives just down there," Yuki pointed down the street. "That house on the corner, see?"

"Ah- yes?"

"You look pretty strong, I'm sure you could carry him, right?"

"W-W-Wha-"

"Yes, I think so," Omi nodded, slowly standing up with Taichi in his arms. "Are you okay, Taichi-kun? Does it hurt?"

"… a …. a little bit, maybe …?"

Good boy, Yuki thought as Taichi finally played along.

"I'll be careful," Omi promised, holding Taichi close to his chest. "Let's get you home, okay?"

"… okay …"

"Yuki-kun, are you coming with us or … ?"

"Oh I really shouldn't," Yuki sighed. "His little sister can't stand the sight of me ever since I let it slip that unicorns aren't real, I best not approach their house for my own safety."

"… huh … I see …"

"Plus I was just fixing my board anyway! Got the whole axle unscrewed, I can't leave it like that! Taichi, I'll hurry up and sneak by later, okay? You'll be totally fine with Omi, don't worry!"

"I'm not! Aaa- I mean, I'm not worrying! I will be fine … I think … Omi-san, I'm so sorry …"

"Don't worry … I fell all the time too when I started. Even sprained my wrist once … and so many cuts and bruises, ahaha … I carry bandaids all the time out of habit now. Let's get you home, Taichi-kun …"

Yuki caught one last glimpse of Taichi's face over Omi's shoulder as he walked away with Taichi in his arms. Whether that was panic or gratitude in his friend's eyes, Yuki couldn't tell - but he still gave him an encouraging smile and a big thumbs up anyway.

And like a good friend, he also texted him to check up on the situation once he fixed his board and got home.

> "So? How was it?"

> "Yuki-chan!!!! WHAT DID YOU DO!?"

> "Nothing. Did you make it home safe?"

> "Yeah!?!?! What do you mean NOTHING!?!?"

> "Was it a comfortable journey?"

> "Yuki-chan!!!!!"

> "What? We've never seen him that up close before. His chest looked nice and firm to lay your head on, no?"

> "YOU CAN'T JUST SAY THAT"

> "I sure can in private. Unless he's still with you?"

> "Obviously not????"

> "Hey, you never know. Did you at least get his number?"

> "No."

Ugh … unbelievable! What a waste of his scheming effort to not even-

> "… but he did say he can show me how to do it without falling on the big pipe. When my foot heals. He said I can come up to him anytime."

> "At least something!"

> "Do you think I should …"

> "Duh?"

> "But I'll be nervous."

> "What the fuck for."

> "… I like Omi-san, you know?"

> "You don't say."

> "Yuki-chan!??? YOU KNEW!?"

> "Taichi, I am moderately disinterested in your antics - not blind."

> "Is it that bad ?"

> "You went the same color as your hair when he skated shirtless in the summer."

> "I DIDN'T!!!!!"

> "Absolutely did."

> "NO?????"

> "Aha."

> "Yuki-chan!!!!"

> "Just go say hi next time."

There was no reply.

Maybe Taichi short-circuited at the thought.

Notes:

Part two with Omi's POV now exists too because I couldn't help myself.
