Work Text:

Cat was laying on her bed, fully invested in the episode of Drake And Josh that she was watching; in her hands she held an unopened box of Skittles that Sam had brought home from the grocery store for her.

The red head remembered the candy, ripping open the box and popping a few in her mouth. They tasted off.

"Hey Sam?" She sat up.

"Sup, kid?" Sam looked up from her own bed, pausing her parkour fails compilation.

"These taste weird.. come try one."

"I'm sure they're fine; buuut if you're offering" The blonde hopped off her bed, leaning over Cat's and holding her hand out expectantly. The other girl plopped a skittle into her waiting palm.

"Only one?" Sam pouted, eating it anyway. "hm... They do taste kinda funny actually.."

Without warning, Sam's hair was suddenly red, and Cat's blonde.

"Woah!" Cat jolted forward.

"What?"

"Your hair!"

The other girl raised a brow, grabbing a strand of her hair and pulling it into her view.

"...WHAT THE FUCK?!"

"Language!" Cat squealed.

"Shut up, you curse like a sailor sometimes and- wait" Sam grabbed her roommates hair, holding it in front of her face. Cat gasped.

"We swapped hair colors!" The former redhead squeaked in delight. "That's so cool!"

"How the chiz did this happen?!" The former blonde was much less excited.

Cat slapped her roommate's arm repeatedly. "The Skittles!"

"Did you forget to take your special vitamins today..?"

"How else could you explain it?!"

"...I dunno.. I gotta call Carly." Sam walked out of the room, dumbfounded.

"I wanna call someone.." Cat pouted, pulling out her pear-phone. "Oh! Jade would love to hear about this!"

The perky makeup artist held her phone to her ear, waiting for the goth to pick up.

After several seconds of ringing, she finally answered.

"What do you want..?" Jade growled over the phone, sounding like she'd just woken up.

"Hi, Jadey!" Cat squealed.

"Don't call me that."

"Sorry, what are you up too?!"

Jade groaned on the other line. "We'll I was taking a nap.."

"Oh! Okay, you can go back to that!"

"Thanks..?" With that, the line went dead.

Cat smiled to herself, grabbing the box of Skittles again. She blinked at it for a moment. "Damnit." she mumbled, remembering why she'd called the thespian in the first place.

The phone rang again, this time, Jade answered immediately.

"Whaaat?!" She hissed. "Did I not say I'm trying to sleep!?"

"I know, but I just remembered what I called you about! Can you come over?" She twirled her now blonde hair.

"Why?"

"Just come over!"

"Must I..?"

"Yes!!"

The pale girl groaned again. "Fine, I'll be there in ten."

The line went dead once more.

.
.
.

True to her word, exactly ten minutes later, there was a loud, insistent knock on the front door.

Sam jumped off the couch. "Hang on, brb." She muttered into her phone, setting it down and going to see who was making all of the noise.

On the other side of the entryway stood a very tired and angry looking goth. She'd cleaned up nicely for someone who was supposedly just taking a nap, but she still looked sloppy.

"Jade?" Sam questioned upon looking up.

"Hi." She hissed. "What happened to your hair?" the Raven haired girl pointed to Sam's red locks.

"Long story. Come in." She took a step back, allowing Jade inside. "What brings you here?" Sam flopped back on the couch.

"Cat." Jade rubbed an eye. "Where is she?"

"Our room"

She nodded, waving behind her when she walked off as some form of thanks.

.
.

Cat was examining her box of magic Skittles when her door slammed open. She jumped with a yelp of shock before her eyes fell on her old friend.

"Jadey!" She leaped off her bed, pulling the other girl in a tight bear hug.

Jade's stiff shoulders relaxed a little, but she still attempted to pull her off. "I said don't call me that." she scowled.

"Right." The blonde pouted.

"What happened to your hair?" She repeated her question from earlier.

"Me and Sam swapped hair colors!"

"...why?" The goth sat on Sam's bed, attempting to get as far away from the glitter and pink on Cat's side of the room as possible.

"Oh, it wasn't on purpose!" The perky girl grabbed her Skittles, waving the box around. "My Skittles did it!"

"Your...Skittles?" Jade leaned forward, her brows furrowed in slightly annoyed confusion.

"Yeah! They're like magic or something!"

"Did you forget to take your special vitamins today?"

"No! Jade, Im serious!" The blonde pleaded.

"Let me get this straight." The thespian stood up. "You woke me up from my after school nap and made me come over to your house to tell me a box of Skittles was magical?! You couldn't have just spouted this bullshit over the phone and let me go back to sleep?!" Her scissors were pointed threateningly in Cat's direction.

"It's not bullshit!"

"Sure seems like it." She slipped her scissors back into her pocket, crossing her arms underneath her chest.

"No, try one!" Cat shoved a blue Skittle into Jade's hand.

"I don't like Skittles."

"Just try it!"

The goth's eye twiched, but she sighed, relenting and popping the candy into her mouth. She swallowed it without chewing like a pill. "Wow, nothing happened." she deadpanned.

"Hold on!" The other girl grabbed a Skittle of the same color, chewing it like a normal person and gulping it down.

Both girls suddenly fell limp, unconscious.

.
.
.

Cat was the first to wake up. She groaned and lifted a hand to her eye, rubbing it. She had no idea when she'd passed out, she didn't even think she was that tired.

As her hand pulled away, she noticed a smudge of eyeliner on it, that was weird, she hadn't been wearing makeup since she'd gotten home and wait- since when was she on Sam's side of the room?

She blinked to reorient herself, looking around, only to see.. herself, passed out on the floor. She giggled, "Im funny.." before she realized that wasn't her voice.

The perky girl quickly glanced at her hands, they were suddenly much more pale with chipped black nail polish that Cat had definitely not been wearing; a huge grin formed on her face and she sprung off the bed, violently shaking her body on the floor. "Jade!"

Cat -or rather, Jade- growled at the movement, swatting at her own hand. Her eyes then shot open to stare at herself looking back at her.

"WHAT THE FUCK?!"

"We swapped bodies!" Cat was beaming.

"WHY are you HAPPY about this?!" Jade was up in an instant, pacing around. "Stop smiling with my face!"

"Then stop frowning with my face!" Despite her tone, Cat was still grinning wildly, practically jumping. "also, I can't help it! I'm smiley and this is so cool!"

"No it isn't!" Cat's hands grabbed Jade's shoulders. "I have a date with Tori tonight! I can't show up looking like you!"

"I can go in your place!"

"NO!" She slapped the girl in her body. "How do we swap back?! Tell me you know how to reverse this, Cat or I swear to god-"

"Cat!" Sam was suddenly in the doorway. "Why are you so angry at Jade? What did I miss?"

Jade shoved the girl in her body away from her, pulling her best -and alarmingly good- Cat impersonation. "Oh I'm not! We were rehearsaling lines for a play!"

The former blonde chuckled, seemingly buying it. "It's rehearsing."

Jade laughed Cat's obnoxiously unique laugh, gesturing for the other girl to say something.

Cat got the hint, clearing her throat and sitting up with her best impression of Jade. "Hey Sam, why don't you go..uh.." she glanced at the real Jade for guidance, the only thing she received in return was a shrug. "uh... Outside?" she continued. Jade facepalmed.

"Why?" The red haired girl raised a brow.

"because it's nice out-?"

Sam turned to Jade. "Is she ok-?"

"No!" Jade called, beginning to shoved Sam out the door. "She's sick and highly contagious! You need to leave! Bye bye!"

"Wha- Hey! Cat!" Was all Sam could say before she was violently shoved out the door. The blonde locked it and spun around to face the girl in her body.

.

"You sounded nothing like me.." Cat pouted.

"Yeah I did, we've been over this. Plus, it's not like you did any better." Jade crossed her arms and leaned against the door. "I lie way better then that."

"Why didn't you just tell Sam the truth?"

"Listen to me carefully, Cat." Jade jumped onto Sam's bed next to the girl in her body. "No one can know about this, we will get sent to a psych ward or something and you don't need to go back to one of those, especially not after how much of a hassle it was to get you out the first time."

"I miss the red blocks." Cat whined.

"Do you understand me?"

"Aye aye, Captain! So, what's the plan?"

Jade heaved a sigh. "For starters, we gotta swap outfits at least, all this pink is literally giving me a rash."

"'Kay kay!" Without warning, Cat pulled her shirt off, handing it to Jade.

"Cat!"

"Whattie?"

"I wasn't wearing a bra!"

She slammed the shirt to her chest. "Why not?!"

"We didn't have any clean ones that didn't hook in the front and I hate bras that hook in the front."

"You could've worn an undershirt!"

"I didn't exactly expect to be stripped! Your like a sister to me!"

"Do I put the shirt back on?!"

"Just-!" Jade sighed. "Just give it to me and go into the bathroom, but I swear to god if you look at or touch any part of me you aren't supposed to I'll actually murder you."

"Wasn't planning on it" The other girl squeaked, tossing Jade her shirt and rushing into Sam's bathroom.

The door cracked for the two of them to hand each other their outfits, changing respectfully without looking at or touching any weird parts of each other's bodies.

Jade grimaced at the sight of her body in pink clothes.

"You should shave." Cat mumbled, sitting on her bed. "Your legs are hairy and it's itchy."

"Gee thanks." Jade laid down on Sam's bed. "Your the one in my body, why don't you just do it for me?"

"Gross!"

"Whatever. We really gotta figure out a way to swap back, preferably before 5pm."

"Uhm..Jade?"

"What?"

"It's 4:58..."

"WHAT?!" The blonde bolted upright. "Fuck! It's way too late to cancel, Tori is probably already at Nozu!"

"Do I go as you then?!"

Jade groaned. "We don't really have a choice." She stood up, grabbing her bag. "Just, please don't fuck up my relationship.."

-----

After stopping by Jade's -thankfully empty- house to dress Cat in one of the goth's dresses, the two pulled into the Nozu parking lot.

"What was it like doing my makeup?" Cat questioned as she unbuckled.

"Like doing my own in third person." Jade deadpanned. "It was really weird." She shook her head, refocusing. "Remember, I'll be on the phone in the corner watching and listening to everything, if you ever don't know what to say, blink and flick your- or I guess, my hair."

"Kay kay!" Cat saluted.

"Yeah, no more of that." The -after dying Cat's hair back to it's original color- redhead grabbed the other girl's wrist, lowering her hand. "Don't do anything I wouldn't do."

.
.

Cat entered first, Jade's phone in her hand with Jade on the other line. She glanced around, spotting Tori; she was about to call her name and wave like a lunatic, but quickly suppressed the urge. Jade would never do something like that, she had to act cool.

She sauntered over to the table as best as she could, sitting down across from her friend.

"You look nice." Tori greeted with a smile, kissing her hand as she sat down.

Cat's brain immediately short circuited. This felt so wrong. She shot a quick glance over her shoulder to Jade, who was glaring at her intensely.

She swallowed, mumbling. "You too.."

Tori's grin got brighter, seeming to be satisfied with that answer.

The waitress walked over. "What can I get you girls to drink?"

"I'll just have a root beer." The Latina glanced down at the menu.

Cat blinked, flicking her hair behind her ear.

"Just get a water." Jade spoke through Cat's earbuds.

"Water, p-" She stopped herself before she said please, clearing her throat. "Water. Get me a water."

The waitress nodded, walking off.

"You ok, Jade?" Tori furrowed her brows.

"Why do you ask?" "Jade" responded.

"You were like- ten minutes late and I swear I just heard you almost say please."

"Im uh.." Cat could feel herself start to sweat, she was a horrible liar. "Sick?"

"Are you asking me if your sick?"

"No! I am- sick." she faked a cough for good measure before standing suddenly. "Im gonna go to the bathroom!" she announced before running off into the restroom.

Tori blinked, dumbfounded by her sudden departure.

.
.

"Cat!" Jade held her phone to her ear, sipping the lemonade she had ordered. "What are you doing!?"

"I can't do this, Jade!" Cat cried.

"Why not!? It was literally your idea!"

"I didn't think it'd feel this wrong! I don't like lying to Tori!"

Jade pinched the bridge of her nose, shaking her head. "Get your shit together, Cat. She's getting suspicious and I don't want her to think I ran out on her."

The perky girl assessed herself in the mirror. Sure, she looked like Jade, but she most definitely did not feel like Jade. "What's the emotion you feel most often?!" She panicked.

"Uh- probably anger? But don't be angry with-"

"Kay kay!" Cat quickly thought of all the things in the world that made her mad. With a scoff and her expression schooled into a scowl, she stormed out of the bathroom.

"Caaat.." Jade whined, facepalming.
.
.

"What was that all about?" Tori questioned her "girlfriend" as she sat down.

"None if your damn business!" Cat hissed.

The Latina winced. "Jeez, okay. I'm sorry."

"You should be."

"What has gotten into you?! You were late, you almost said please, you are clearly not sick and now your being a gank!"

"Say your hampster died!" Jade shouted into her phone from across the restaurant.

"My hampster died!" Cat blurted.

"What?" Tori raised a brow. "Jade, you don't have a hampster."

"Yeah, not anymore."

"You never did!"

"You don't know that!"

"I was literally at your house last night!"

"I bought him this morning!"

"and you didn't tell me?! And he already died?!" Tori clearly wasn't convinced, and it was making both Cat and Jade panic.

"His old family abused him?!" Cat tried.

"Huh?!"

"Fake tears!" Jade encouraged. "Tori is a sucker for that kinda thing!"

Without warning, Cat burst into tears on command, slamming her head onto the table for dramatic effect.

"Not that emotional!" Jade groaned. "God this is literally my worst nightmare."

Tori was by her side in a second. "Jade?! Are you ok?!"

"Deflect." the real Jade growled.

"Fine." Cat sobbed.

The Latina sat next to her, rubbing her back. "Seriously, you can tell me what really happened.."

The two girls with swapped bodies panicked for a moment.

"Tell her you got in a fight with your dad." Jade instructed.

Cat looked up at Tori with her best puppy dog eyes, gleaming with tap water disguised as tears. "I- I got into a fight with my dad.." she mumbled emotionally.

"Jade.." Tori muttered sympathetically, kissing her head.

The real Jade swallowed a lump in her throat. Just seeing Cat on the receiving end of her girlfriend's affection was enough to make her heart burn with jealousy, even if Tori thought it was her.

The two stayed like this for awhile until the waitress came back with their drinks, placing them down. "What can I get started for you ladies?"

"Uhm.." Tori grabbed her menu from across the table. "Just some ramen, for both of us?" She glanced at Cat for approval, to which she nodded with a fake little sniffle. "yeah, just that then." She smiled, handing the menus to the waitress, who nodded and left once again.

"Fell better?" She looked down at "Jade".

"Mhm.." Cat mumbled.

"Good." She leaned in, interlocking their lips.

Cat froze. This was wrong on so many levels. She couldn't bring herself to kiss back, not even to pretend she was Jade.

Tori's brow furrowed and she pulled away. "Why didn't you kiss back?"

"I uh-.." Cat blinked at Jade's table several times.

"I hate root beer!" Jade reasoned. "Say something about her mouth smelling like it or something!"

"Your lips taste like root beer." Cat tried.

Tori seemed to buy it as she quickly wiped her mouth. "Awh shoot, sorry, I forgot you hated root beer."

"'s alright.."

.

Cat managed to keep the conversation friendly for the rest of the night, with the help of Jade over the phone.

When her and Tori parted ways, she shot the girl a quick smile, making it as small as possible. It felt like something Jade would do.

Tori smiled back, getting into her car and driving off.

Cat let out a breath she hadn't noticed she's been holding as Jade came over to stand beside her.

"I owe you big time." She mumbled, unlocking her car.

"That felt so weird." Cat slumped into the passenger seat.

"Wasn't much better on my end." The thespian sighed, starting the car and backing out of the parking lot. "But now that it's over, we really need to figure out how to change back. I don't think I can take much more of this, having to act like you should literally be a form of torture."

"WHAT'S THAT SUPPOSED TO MEAN?!"

"Relax, kitty Cat." She shifted gears. "It's just hard for me to bite my tongue and be...polite." she shuddered at the word.

The girl in Jade's body calmed down, her head still spinning from the events of the night. “Can we get ice cream?”

“No- ...fine.”

----

Back at Sam and Cat's apartment, Jade snuck into their shared room to grab the box of magic Skittles. Thankfully, Sam was taking a shower, it was the first of the month after all.

She crept back out and sat at the dining table in front of Cat. "Does it have to be a specific color?"

"Blue."

She nodded, fishing out two blue candies and handing one to Cat.

The two girls ate the Skittles at the same time, falling unconscious at the table.

.
.

Several minutes later, Sam came out of the bedroom, fully dressed and still drying her hair. "Hey, Cat? Have you seen my-" she paused when she saw the two passed out at the table.

She walked over, sitting up the red head and slapping her in the face.

"Ow!" Cat cried, jolting awake.

"Have you seen my phone? I dunno where I left it. Also why is Jade still here, it's like 1am."

The perky girl shook her head, looking down at her hands. She beamed immediately upon seeing her own hands and not Jade's. "It worked!" She jumped. "It was that simple, it worked!"

"uh, what worked?"

"Thank you Sam!" Cat hugged her roommate before bouncing off happily.

"Your welcome-?!" The bewildered returned to blonde girl called back. She then glanced back at Jade.

She poked her head awkwardly. "Yo..wake up."

She didn't stir.

"Oi!" She lifted the goth up. "Wake up!" She slapped her.

"OW!" Jade hissed, shoving Sam away from her. "What?!"

"It's like 1am, dude." The fried chicken lover deadpanned. "You should probably be headin' home."

"Shit, really?" Jade checked her phone, biting back a sigh of relief when she saw her black nail polish. "Aight." She stood up. "Cya 'round, Puckett." she muttered as she made her way to the door.

"Right back at 'cha, West." Sam replied, tossing the box of Skittles in the trash. "I am never buying Cat Skittles again.."

.

Upon exiting the house, Jade slumped against the door with a sigh. In her exhaustion, all she could mumble was: "Thank god that's over.."

.

Since then, Jade and Cat's little body swap became a surprisingly well kept secret between the two girls, even though they still made jokes about it when they were alone.

Cat received a message that night while she was asleep.

[Tori Vega]:
Why were you spying on me and Jade's date?
