In the middle of the night, Yahiko heard footsteps right outside his room. He jolted wide awake and slowly crept towards the door, hoping it wasn't an intruder.
Fortunately, he heard Nagato's voice on the other side, asking, "Sorry if I scared you, but may I come in? I'm having a hard time falling asleep."
Yahiko sighed in relief, "No worries. You know I'd do anything for you."
Nagato stepped inside and sat down on Yahiko's tatami mat. It was rather old, but it still felt nice enough. He fidgeted with the sleeves of the tattered shirt he was wearing as a nightshirt while glancing back at his old friend.
Meanwhile, Yahiko scrounged up some sleeping medicine that he had traded for in town. He poured a little dose for his old friend and handed it over.
"Mm, thank you," Nagato said with a soft smile.
He downed the medicine, but he stared into Yahiko's big brown eyes as if there was something he really wanted to tell his old friend.
Yahiko asked, "Is something wrong?"
Nagato shook his head, "N-no, it's just..."
He furrowed his brow in thought. Yahiko gave him a reassuring pat on the back, which made his expression soften.
"Ah, well... Is it okay?"
"Is what okay," Yahiko asked in a puzzled tone.
Nagato looked him deep in the eye. His hands shook and his cheeks were turning pink.
"I want to be more than just your friend, Yahiko. I-I love you."
Yahiko chuckled to himself and gave Nagato a tight hug. Nagato almost gasped in shock, but he soon settled into the hug.
"Of course, Nagato. I love you too."
They held each other for a long time, embracing each other's touch until Nagato's nerves settled back down. Then, they pulled apart and lied down together on the mat.
"Now, let's get some rest, babe," Yahiko said with a gleam in his eye, "We've got a big day tomorrow."
Nagato nodded in agreement, though his blush turned even brighter at the thought of being Yahiko's babe.
Yahiko ruffled his hair and whispered, "You're too cute, you know that?"
Nagato hummed to himself, but was more than happy to take the compliment. The two boys slept together that night, and they knew they'd be inseparable from that night on.
