Chapter Text
Scout watched the battle with a close eye... - literally close because he was actually running through the active warzone which was 2Fort at the moment.
Bullets barely miss him as he skillfully dodges them. Bullets are surprisingly quiet. In the action movies he watches they usually make a whizz sound or something but in real life it's kinda quiet. Until the bullet actually hits something.
It scared him a bit.
But the adrenaline rush he felt overpowered his fear. He would just respawn anyways if something went wrong.
Respawn was a blessing. He felt less scared because of it. Death still hurt but he knew it wasn't the end. And he was comforted by that fact.
He feels a grin start to form on his face.
While bullets are silent sometimes they create a small woosh of air that brushes past his legs as they miss him by just a hair. When he first started this job he barely noticed this. But now he seems to acknowledge it more. It's a wonderful feeling. It gets his blood pumping. He loved days like these. Days with perfectly clear blue skies and the fact that he was undoubtedly the fastest man on the field. Maybe even the fastest man alive!!
That wasn't true. But he liked to believe it. Just for a moment. That he was the most important person ever.
Before he had to go back to knowing he was nothing.
But the moment quickly passed when the Blu Pyro came out of nowhere and blasted him with a flamethrower.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dell couldn't help but feel a smile creep onto his face as he watched Pyro take out the other team's Scout. That little firebug had improved so much since they first got here. Went from getting one or two kills each match to over a dozen!
He couldn't help but feel happy for them.
Watching Pyro go on about their business lighting up different enemies made him feel so proud. Sometimes he liked to find a quiet spot to hang out to just watch Pyro.
Just for a moment.
And in that moment? All he cared about was watching that little scamp shine.
But then all of a sudden Pyro just - stopped.
They looked to their right. Staring at... something.
They were so distracted by whatever was there. So enchanted by the sight that they didn't see the RED Demoman coming their way with his grenade launcher at the ready.
Pyro was blown to bits.
Not a problem. They would just respawn anyways.
But then the Demoman stopped to stare just like Pyro had.
Now that there was definitely strange. What was over there that was so captivating that it got two people to stop dead in their tracks practically out in the open mind you where a Sniper could easily take them out? In fact why hadn't a Sniper taken them out?
The RED Demoman starting running in the direction he and Pyro had looked.
Now should Dell Cohnager follow that Demoman? Or should he stay here in his nice little spot that had a clear view of most of the battle. It was also in the shade. Away from that unforgiving sun which seemed to be waiting for someone to stand underneath it for just a second too long. And he didn't want to get sunburnt.
But it's not like he'd take a while anyways ...
And he hadn't felt a pull like this in ages. That itch of curiosity that he had to scratch. If he didn't he'd probably die.
So, he walked out very carefully. Looking around before running in the direction Demoman had gone.
And that's when he saw something that definitely wasn't there before when the BLU team last fought here.
A giant meadow. The entrance to it was squished between two rickety old buildings. It was a bit of a hill so he couldn't see too far past what laid in front of him but what he saw was nothing short of magnificent. A field filled with wildflowers and all sorts of plants. The grass looked short but oddly fluffy. There were trees off to the side of the meadow. Possibly a forest? And butterflies fluttered around.
Dell ran up the hill to look. As he did so he noticed that those trees were in fact a part of a forest. A pretty big one too. It surrounded the meadow. He glanced down for a second and noticed that what he thought was grass was a bunch of clover.
Everywhere.
He couldn't even tell if there was any grass. There had to be but that's just how much clover there was. It covered the entire meadow!
On closer inspection it was actually a bunch of four leaf clovers.
He heard about this kind of clover before. Never actually seen it before but it was real pretty.
That's when he noticed the Red Demoman laying down in the meadow. - Dell took out his wrench just in case.
He slowly came up towards Demoman.
But what would he even do? Kill him? In such a beautiful place?
Wait why did he even care
But what other option is there besides fighting? He couldn't just walk up to a member of the enemy team he was supposed to be fighting right now and start a conversation with him. But what should he actually do?
He didn't have to decide what to do because the RED Demoman sat up suddenly and just stared at him.
He wasn't smiling now.
But then his smile returned.
"Aye! C'mere! Put down yer wrench for a second!"
This was a surprise to Dell. Not a complete surprise but a surprise nonetheless. Out of all the possible outcomes he imagined for this interaction this one did cross his mind but he didn't think it would actually happen.
but.....
While this scenario is unexpected it's not unwelcome.
He wouldn't mind taking a load off for juuuust a second. The clover looked so soft.....
He walked over to the Scottish Cyclops and laid next to him.
Looking up at the painfully bare blue sky.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Scout ran into an empty building panting. He needed a second to recharge before he could go back out there. He reached into his bag to grab a can of Bonk! before he noticed something metal and blue and kinda shaped like a sentry in the middle of the room.....
Which cause him to immediately run back out.
He leaned up against the wall next to the empty doorframe of the room he almost lost his life in.
Well death was temporary for him because of the respawn machine but whatever! That was a close one. That sentry almost got him. Or at least he assumed it was a sentry. It was metal and blue and kinda square and sentries kind of looked like that!
He carefully poked his head back out to see what he might have to deal with. Hopefully it wasn't something too notable. Or else he'd had to tell his team about it.
But it was just a tool box.
But it was the BLU Engineer's toolbox so he was just being careful.
That's what he told himself.
To avoid acknowledging he got scared by a toolbox.
But wait. There's a tool box here. A blue one. But where was the BLU Engineer?
Maybe he forgot it?
Or maybe it's a trap.
Whatever the case it's weird and he didn't want to stick around for too long just in case the BLU Engineer came back around looking for his tools.
After chugging his can of Bonk and tossing away the can in a random direction he ran back out onto the field. Looking around carefully for any incoming bullets.
Nothing so far. Could be a Sniper hiding around so he should look around carefully and try to stay outta the open.
After a bit of running and looking around when he looked to his right he stopped dead in his tracks.
A giant green hill with little white and yellow flowers littered across it stood in front of him in between two wooden buildings.
Is that a meadow??? What was that doing here????
He ran towards it. He glanced down and noticed the wildflowers beneath his feet.
He crouched down and stared at the flowers before spotting something at the edge of the grass..
"Oh a four leaf clover nice!"
Man just his lucky day!! He has to show it to his team this is so cool!
He looked around for someone to show his amazing discovery to when a bullet whizzed past his skull.
Oh shit.
He started running and seeing no other open direction in his peripheral vision ran straight ahead up the hill and into the meadow.
That might have been a stupid decision but he made it to the top of the hill and into the meadow without getting shot.
He looked around the meadow.
And it was one of the most beautiful sights he had ever seen.
A giant forest surrounded a giant field of flowers and grass. The kind he remembered rolling down as a kid then getting sick by the time he hit the bottom of the hill. One time when he did that he accidentally rolled into a building.
He put the clover into his bag and took out his gun just in case there was any danger.
That's when he noticed the enemy Engineer sitting up.
He immediately raised his gun and shot him.
The shot rang out in Tavish's ears. He sat up and looked over at the BLU Engineer. Who had been shot in the head.
He quickly reached for his weapon when he actually saw who did it.
Oh. It was just Scout.
He sighed and stared at him. Scout wasn't very situationally aware. And to be fair he would've done the same probably. But he was still a bit upset.
"Hey!!! We were having' a nice moment here!"
The body disappeared like normal. But blood pooled beneath Tavish. Sticky warm blood.
He stared at the ground beneath him before looking at Scout. "Lad give me a hand here."
Scout held out his hand which he took very quickly.
He wished he could stay longer but there was a fight to get back to.
Then suddenly Scout shoved something in his face. It took a second for his eyes to adjust and in that second Scout was already talking.
"Hey look at what I found!" He waved the green blob in front of his face and he soon realized the boy was holding a four leaf clover. And was grinning ear to ear.
Tavish smiled back at him. Albeit a bit tired. - "That's good luck you know. You should preserve it."
"Preserve it..?" The Scout tilted his head and squinted his eyes.
"Yeah! I'll get Engie to show you when we get back to base. He probably has all sorts of stuff we can use."
He was excited to teach Scout something new. Not like that was an uncommon experience but he saw him as like a little brother. A very very very very very dumb little brother. Seriously the guy can't even read.
He ruffled his head and laughed while Scout whined and tried to stop him.
"C'mon man!!!!!"
The sound faded away into silence for the meadow as the two walked away.
Dead quiet.
Just like it had been before they got here.
Soft footsteps can be heard from just beyond the trees.
Another gunshot rings out and lands in the trunk of a tree on the outskirts of the forest.
Something skuttles away quickly.
