Work Text:

Curled up in front of the gates of Sunagakure, Sasori heard a chirp. Not many small birds survived the deserts harsh weather, so few were native to Suna. He looked towards the source of the sound, he saw a yellow bird. From the books he's read, he could tell it was a cockatiel. Feathers spiked up from the top of its head and a red cheeks that looked fluffy. It chirped again as it flew down to him, landing on his knees, sitting on them with its legs covered underneath all the feathers. "You're a weird bird..." He hummed, tilting his head at it. The creature mimicked the motion, as if repeating the phrase at him. "What are you even doing here? Birds your size wont survive long here unless someone is looking after you." The bird just snuggled into his knees further, letting out a happy chirp. The boy sighed, getting nowhere since the bird couldn't speak. "You probably can't even understand me, can you?" The bird pinched his hand with its beak, clearly offended. "Oww, fine, you can understand me then..." He rubbed the injured area of his hand, a red blotch appearing.

"Do you think my parents are gonna come back?" He whispered in a soft tone, it had been over a year since his parents had left, his granny being left with him ever since. The bird moved to sit on Sasori's head now, snuggling into the soft locks. Its claws pushing into Sasori's scalp calmed him, a soft trilling sound flooded the boys ears. Sasori sighed, relaxing a bit. "I really should have realized it earlier..." The boy stood up, leaving the bird on his head and starting on his walk home. "Well, at least I have you now, right?" The bird chirped happily, beak preening the red-head's hair. "Well, if you're going to stay with me, you're gonna need a name then..." He hummed, reaching a finger up to slowly pat the bird, who snuggled into the touch. "How about Beans? I like beans and you kinda remind me of one." Sasori felt an affirming coo from Beans, who snuggled into his hair more. "Okay, well, you're gonna meet my granny soon Beans, I live with her since my parents... You know." The bird just kept preening the human, tugging on his hair sweetly.

On his way home, the cockatiel kept with his grooming of the boy. He opened the door, shouting "I'm home!" To Chiyo, who went to greet him, only to find the bird still on his head. "A bird?" She raised an eyebrow, "He appeared earlier while I was waiting for..." He drifted off, focusing on putting a hand up to get Beans off his head. "His name is Beans by the way." He hummed, the bird snuggling his cheek. "You want to keep it?" He nodded, "He doesn't have anyone to look after him, so I will." She hummed, "Only if you're sure, he will be a big responsibility." He nodded again, focusing on stroking the bird's back.

Years later, the bird was laying next to Sasori as he mangled the third Kazekage, tearing out organs and replacing skin with wood. Days prior, he had prepared to leave the village, having earned himself the reputation as Sasori of the Red Sand and knowing that if he continued massacring other people, he'd have to be on his own. Beans moved to sit on his shoulders, clearly not having much interest in art like Sasori's. The cockatiel didn't age, since he found out Beans was his soul-animal, he found it normal that the bird still acted like a newly hatched chick. Focused on his work, Sasori ignored the bird pecking his cheek, he could tell the bird wanted attention, but he needed to lay out the chakra network for the third Kazekage before he could play with Beans. Beans, ever impatient, huffed and flew to the other side of the room. Sasori rose with a sigh, going to pet the bird, "I'll play soon, Beans." He hummed, going back to his work. The cockatiel seemed to accept this, going back to Sasori's shoulder, rubbing his head against the soon-to-be-puppet's.

Months after this, he had an encounter with an organization. "I see you've met your soul-animal." A woman with blue hair hummed, holding her hand out and revealing a small orange pelican spider on the back of it, "Seems like we have that in common." He sighed, "What do you want?" She tilted her head, "Who said I wanted anything?" He glared, "Why would you talk to me if you didn't?" She grinned, "Well, now that you said something, I'd like for you to join my organization, the Akatsuki." He huffed, shaking his head, "I don't have time for that." She sighed, "Guess I'll have to take you by force then."

He was so pissed, he got his ass handed to him by that woman- Konan, and she got him to join this stupid organization and now Beans was loving the new coat he had to wear. The cockatiel was curled up in the fabric, snuggling and rubbing his scent into it. Even worse, his partner was an asshole so he had to send a boy as a spy to keep an eye on him. At least it wouldn't get worse.

It got worse, the snake-ass bitch betrayed the Akatsuki and now he was working with a blonde idiot with NO grasp on what art actually meant. But Beans seemed to like him, so it was tolerable. Even then, Deidara had a giant scorpion, the scorpion actually appreciated true art and the eternity of it. Sparky- the name of the scorpion, as he was informed- actually helped him with holding joints together and did it superbly so. Strong pincers placing arm rods in with great precision. If he thought Deidara was already annoying, it made it worse that Beans started mimic explosion sounds. Horrible, really. Even though Sasori- unwillingly- loves Beans, it was unpleasant to hear a "Kaaa-booom" in the middle of the night.

Sparky was 100% more tolerable than Deidara, the scorpion was way better than him. Calm and undisruptive, not taking any bullshit at all. He even threatened Deidara with his telson... multiple times. To be fair, Sasori has done the exact same thing as well, but he knew he wasn't going to actually harm him, Sasori could also tell that Sparky wasn't going to either. Even though Sasori wouldn't actually hurt Deidara, he was close to doing so now. Said blonde was laying upside-down on Sasori's bed and was ranting about how he hated Itachi. (Sure Sasori didn't sleep, but Beans needs a place to rest so, next best thing.) Deidara was moaning about how annoying the ravenette was and how the only thing he liked about him was his Axolotl, Sushi. Which was fair, but annoying.

"Will you shut up, for once in your life?" Sasori huffed, side eyeing Deidara, who was watching Sparky and Beans cuddle. "You know, you remind me of Sparky, mean." At this, the Emperor Scorpion clicked his pincers threateningly at the "artist", who shivered. "See what I mean?" He whined, looking at Sasori, who was holding a pair of twezers and clicking them in the same way at Deidara. "No, I don't, because that would mean I'm stuck with you forever and I don't want to think about that." The blond groaned, "Is the thought really that bad?" Sasori leveled him with a glare. "Yes." Was all he said, silence occupying the room. He heard the bed creak, along with floorboards curving under pressure. Sasori ignored this in favour of continuing the little wooden nest he was making for Beans. Hands touched his sides softly and he jumped up, turning to see the blonde laughing hard. "Never knew gentle touch scared you, my man..." He managed out between fits of giggles. The red-head was pissed now. Moving closer, Deidara straightened himself out, acting as if he did nothing wrong. Although his grin said otherwise. "Asshole." In the corner of his eye, he saw Beans' crest fluff up in excitement. Sasori huffed and leaned in to kiss Deidara, catching the taller man off guard. When Sasori pulled back, Deidara pulled him right back in for another. Wood against soft lips, clearly wouldn't be pleasant.

Once Deidara had his fill, he finally pulled back, panting. "Well, my man, I'd say you aren't too against being my soulmate..."
