Under The Mask

Summary:

Felicia Hardy and Peter Parker's lives were at a crossroads. The hero of New York and the infamous cat burglar had both dealt with betrayal and death and it wouldn't be long before they clash again. What will change between them? Will they ever learn to understand each other and mend their fractured relationship?

Notes:

So I'm a huge Peter and MJ fan but Marvel has beaten me down so hard with how they treated that ship. Spectacular Spider-man is still one of the best superhero adaptations despite being cancelled early so I wanted to show my appreciation for it by writing this fanfic. Spider-Cat is like the only other Peter ship I like (well, not included M/M stuff cause we got Johnny Storm) and I do not like Peter and Gwen lol

it's been like a decade since I watched spectacular spider-man so I will change some things for the story. the biggest change will be Harry. Instead of doubling down after his dad "died", he becomes a better person. this is inspired by spider-man 2 on the PS5. despite my criticisms, that's probably the only spider-man thing that made me actually buy Harry and Peter being actual friends and I want to capture that vibe

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Chapter Text

It wasn’t too long ago when Felicia Hardy was betrayed by a man she thought she could trust. Being let down by men wasn’t an uncommon occurrence. The only man she did trust all throughout her life was her father, Walter Hardy. Everything he did was to give her a better life than he ever could.

There was one other man who Felicia thought she could trust…He was a real goody two shoes type. She met hundreds of people who pretended to be what he was. They were just putting on personas to get what they wanted but that Spider-man wasn’t putting on a persona. He really was a good man

…Or at least she thought he was. That was until he denied a man who paid his debt to society his freedom just to stroke his self-righteous ego. It was pathetic. What harm could an old thief do now? Was it enough to be locked in prison with a bunch of psychos with powers?

Felicia took a deep breath. She was on her way to visit her father…the one visit he was allowed a month and she didn’t want to do anything to draw suspicion to her. Especially after that Selina Drew stunt she pulled that humiliated the guards and that nutjob who runs the Daily Bugle. Although she finally did understand all that slander Jameson threw at Spider-man

After what felt like a hundred security checks, Felicia was allowed to sit across from the bulletproof glass that separated her from her father. She could feel the dozens of cameras with guns attached to pointing at her, daring her to do something rash.

It didn’t take long for her father to arrive. When he sat down on the chair, Felicia couldn’t believe the expression on his face. Instead of being miserable as one should be trapped in a hellhole prison, Felicia’s father looked at peace. For a few moments she just assumed that he was happy to see his daughter but she knew that wasn’t right. It looked like a ten ton weight was lifted off his shoulder after decades.

After getting the go ahead from the guards, Walter finally spoke “It’s good to see you again, Felicia. Hope you’re not getting into too much trouble.” he said with a chuckle. Something about flaunting the truth when authority was oblivious always gave him a thrill

“How could you be so happy being locked up in this hellhole?” Felicia seethed

“It’s not too bad. The guards treat me pretty well. Mostly because I’m not a crazy supervillain. They don’t need to hold their breath near me.” Walter replied casually as if he were talking about the weather

“You were this close to freedom and if it wasn’t for Spider-man betraying us…you, we would have been in the clear!”

Walter shushed his daughter “Not too loud! The guards like me enough to give me some privacy but didn’t I teach you better than to just yell out what we do?”

Felicia blinked in realization “You’re right. I’m sorry, I’m just stressed…Seeing you here just reminds me of what that bastard did.”

Walter let out a weary sigh “I’m the one who should apologize. When I was arrested, I forced you to watch your mother die without even being able to hug you or hold her hand as she passed away.”

“Daddy, that's not your fault.” Felicia assured him “If it wasn’t for the money you brought in, Mom wouldn’t have been able to afford all those treatments. I know she wanted to apologize to you too…for dying anyway after all you did.”

“How would you know that?

“She wasn’t lucid in her last few weeks. She thought you were in the room with her and I wasn’t. I was hoping to tell you this after I sprung you out of jail…Didn’t want to make your life even more miserable being behind bars but…I don’t think you’re going out.”

Tears began steaming down Walter’s face “You held that with you for so long? You’re still a girl Felicia!”

“Daddy, I’m nineteen. I’m an adult. I had to grow up fast anyway…”

“I was the one who forced you to grow too fast, Felicia. You almost dropped out of high school because of my mistakes! This…this is the reason why I belong here. Life let me get away with too many mistakes.”

“Daddy don’t say that! If it weren’t for what you taught me, I don’t know what I’d do”

“You’re not the only child who I scarred Felicia. That young boy…I took his Uncle from him! I wanted to be just a burglar. You can replace money and jewels but you can’t replace a life. Remember that Felicia.”

Felicia nodded “I know. I won’t kill anyone. It’s not in my nature.”

“I should never have brought that gun. It meant I was too old for what I was doing. I used to rob rich people! What you’re doing now.” Despite his guilt, Walter couldn’t help but express pride in his daughter “You looked into the family of that man I killed? Ben Parker?”

Felicia let out a deep breath “Yeah, his wife’s a widow. They were taking care of their nephew after his parents died. Ben Parker was dropping said nephew off to some wrestling event and that’s when…”

“That’s when I killed him.” Walter finished his daughter’s statement solemnly

“That doesn’t mean you deserve to be locked in this prison your entire life!”

“It does, Felicia. I robbed two children of their parents that day.”

“...You killed someone else?”

Walter shook his head “You’re only a couple of years older than that boy, Felicia. With me in prison, you had to step up and provide for yourself. You were and still are a teenager and I made you take care of your mother. You had to watch her waste away without any support. Are you saying any man that made his daughter go through such torment deserves to walk free? Forget it, Felicia.”

Felicia wanted to deny it, to tell her dad that he was a perfect father. Anything to ease the guilt he was feeling but she couldn’t. She wasn’t trying to convince her dad but to convince herself. She did feel resentment towards her father for leaving her to watch over her mother alone. She knew it wasn’t Walter’s fault but at the same time it really was. He’s the one who got arrested, forcing herself to grow up fast or die on the street but he also did it to get enough money to care for her mother. Felicia hated the fact that her father wasn’t the perfect father and the fact that he wasn’t a completely awful father either. At least if he was a completely terrible person she would be able to cut him off entirely. Instead she was left with a complicated man who she knew loved his family and paid a huge price for it.

And it sucked

“Look dad…You did make a lot of mistakes but no matter what, I still love you. You were dealt a bad hand in life and you did what you could. You made sure I graduated high school, remember?”

Walter couldn’t help but laugh “That I did. Threatened to stop teaching you the tricks of the trade if your grade slipped.”

“I got my diploma, not that it’s of much use.”

“Well when you finally earned enough money, you could pursue a college degree. Something me and your mother never did.”

“Dad, I already have so much money doing what I love. Something you taught me so that’s more points for you.”

“You’re already better at our little hobby than I ever was. Never make my mistakes, Felicia. Promise me that.”

“Dad, killing isn’t my style, you know that I just told you.”

“....What if Spider-man’s involved?” Walter’s sudden question shifted the mood

Felicia paused, seemingly thinking over that question. She hated Spider-man for what that man did but seeing her father now, somehow at peace with his fate made her hate him just a little less “No, I won’t kill that goody-two shoes either.”

Walter smiled “That’s my girl…”

“Though if he got into trouble and I’m around, I hope he doesn’t expect me to help him out.” Felicia amended to try to get one win over her dad

“Fair enough….”

“Oh! I forgot to tell you that I have a big job planned soon!” Felicia cooed

Walter raised an eyebrow “And what would that be?”

“The funeral of Norman Osborn.”

“The Norman Osborn?”

“The official story is that he died during Green Goblin’s last attack. I don’t know. I don’t care. I do care about the amount of rich people that flew in from across the globe to “pay their respects” AKA gather to make new business deals now that Oscorp is in trouble or maybe just try to buy the company outright.”

“Smart move. Like I said- you’ve surpassed me in every way.”

“Hopefully Spider-man is still too banged up from his fight with the Green Goblin to get in my way but if he does, I promise I won’t take him out. That’s not saying I won’t give him a bruise or two because even if my wonderful dad thinks he deserves to be in prison, I’m still not gonna let that jerk get off easy.”

Walter laughed, “Well, I can’t argue with that.”

Suddenly a loud buzzing interrupted their conversation and a pair of guards entered the room

“Visiting time’s up.” One of the guards announced

“Five more minutes? He’s my only family I have left.”

The guards looked like they were thinking about it before Walter interrupted “Forty-five minutes every month. Those are the rules Felicia. Don’t want Russel and Fred to get into trouble for my sake.”

“You’re dad’s the favorite of the guards here. Cause he’s a nice guy.” One of the guards said

“But mostly because he isn’t a super powered psychopath.” The other guard said “We trust him enough not to let him talk to his daughter without one of us in the room.”

“And for that I’m grateful.” Walter said with a smile

“Yeah, thanks for that. And thanks for treating my dad well.”

“Don’t mention it.” One of the guards responded “But you really have to leave. Visiting hours are over.”

“Bye dad!” Felicia cooed as she was escorted out

“Stay safe, pumpkin!” Walter smiled back but the smile soon faded as his daughter disappeared from his view. He should have told her what he knew. Even though he had no way of knowing, Walter was one hundred percent sure that Spider-man was Peter Parker. Walter watched a lot of news in prison and he knew how Spider-man acts- the superhero always managed to bring some levity to his brushes with death. Whether it was to keep himself from breaking down due to the stress or to goad whoever he was fighting to do something stupid…probably both. This was different.

Walter had some form of twisted pride being the first person Spider-man ever captured even though he was terrified at the sight of some costumed freak that could walk on walls. One that was furious at him for killing an innocent man. Even through that fury, Spider-man didn’t kill him. Seeing that same fury during that prison breakout directed at him once more made Walter connect all the pieces.

Peter Parker and Spider-man were one and the same. Like his daughter, Spider-man was just a teen who suffered because of his mistakes. If he was a brave man, he would have told Felicia the truth to help her let go of her rage. All he could do now was hope. Hope that Felicia is a better person than he ever was and not just a better thief.

Well it was official- Peter Parker’s life had just hit rock bottom. He broke up with Liz Allen because he realized that he was in love with his childhood friend Gwen Stacy. Said Childhood friend is now dating his other childhood friend, Harry Osborn and now all three were attending a funeral

The funeral of Harry’s father, Norman Osborn who he had a hand in killing

He couldn’t bring himself to look at Harry, his best friend even though Harry wasn’t aware that he was Spider-man. All he could do now was hope that Gwen could comfort Harry in a way he couldn’t.

“Hey Peter!” A voice roused Peter from his own thoughts. It was Harry

“Uh, Harry…” Peter let out a sigh “Listen, I’ve been avoiding you all day when I should have been by your side like Gwen. I’m a pretty crappy friend, aren’t I?”

“If you are, I’m in good company.” Harry said with a soft smile “I can’t blame you for keeping your distance right now. I guess I can finally say I know how you feel.”

“Harry, you don’t have to feel-”

“Does it ever go away?” Harry interrupted him with that question

Peter took a moment to try and gather his thoughts “No…It doesn’t. You’re gonna carry that weight the rest of your life.”

Harry nodded “Thanks for not sugar-coating it. You know, I’ve been a real jerk to you lately.”

“What? Harry, what are you talking about?” Peter was really confused about his friend’s remark

“I was just thinking about a few months ago how I complained to my dad about you not being there for me and do you know what he said?”

“No, what?”

“He told me to quit whining, relying on you for help, be a man and take hold of my own destiny.”

“I uh…I don’t…” Peter scratched the back of his neck anxiously

“Look, I know this is his funeral and I don’t think I could forgive Spider-man for killing him but my dad wasn’t a good man. He did a lot of terrible things as the Green Goblin.”

“Yeah, he did…Did you tell anyone else about the truth about Green Goblin?”

Harry shook his head “No. I feel like you’re the only other person who knows the real Normal Osborn.”

“What about your mom?”

Harry shook his head “She’s been pretty much inconsolable after dad died. Besides, she got told about the official story that was cooked up before I could tell her anything”

“Your dad and his crazy goons did a lot of damage that day. And now that he’s gone, he’s forcing you to live with it.”

“That sounds like my dad alright…But what he said to me was some actual advice. I pretty much figured that he wished you were his son instead and I kind of took it out on you. Look at me, some rich kid feeling envious toward his friend who has to work to support his aunt.” Harry said with a bout of mirthless laughter “I gotta learn what I have and appreciate it.”

“That’s something everyone should understand.”

“A smart man would have ditched me long ago. Which is why I’m shocked you never did, Peter.” Harry admitted “You’re a genius”

“I’m a genius because I know better than to abandon my ultra rich friend.” Peter quipped, earning a chuckle and a punch on the shoulder from Harry

“But seriously. I’ve been a terrible boyfriend to Gwen and a terrible friend to you and somehow you both are giving me a second chance.”

Peter had to fight the urge to recoil at the mention of Gwen still being Harry’s girlfriend especially after he broke up with Liz to finally confess to her “We all deserve a second chance. Just gotta make it count.”

“If you see me being a dickhead towards Gwen, you have my permission to punch me in the face.”

“I’ll hold you to that. Where is Gwen anyway? You two were pretty much attached to the hip today?” Peter asked

“She’s talking to my mom right now.”

“Does your mom…you know, run Oscorp now?”

“Things may change soon but right now her and Donald Menken are taking the reins after this situation. If word got out that my dad was Green Goblin then the company’s done for.”

“Yeah, figured. Don’t worry, I’m good at keeping secrets.” Peter assured his friend. It felt pretty wrong to say that to Harry knowing that he was Spider-man.

“Thanks Peter. I guess it’s time for me to step up and be a man. Got any advice?”

“Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Being a man doesn’t mean you have to carry everything on your back. It’s gonna be harder for you since the press is gonna be on you like vultures. Including the Daily Bugle. Sorry in advance.”

“Eh, I can’t blame you for where you work. I’m not gonna pretend Oscorp doesn’t dabble in some shady business.”

“Thanks…Man, I still can’t believe your dad is…gone.” Peter said, bringing both of them back to reality

“I can’t believe he did all that to me…treated me like a mistake throughout my life, framed me as the Green Goblin, broke my leg to make his lie look more convincing and I still wish I could have saved him. I can’t even blame Spider-man for killing my dad because what the hell was he supposed to do? Let my dad just destroy the city? Spider-man didn’t really kill him either, my dad’s the one crash landed in a water tower filled with pumpkin bombs trying to Kill Spider-man!”

Peter didn’t know how to feel about this. It was obvious by Harry’s ranting that anger, grief, sadness, and every other emotion were hitting him like a train. He hated Normal for making his best friend and Norman’s own son go through all of this. Any remaining sympathy he had for Norman was quickly fading away.

But at the same time, while Peter hated to admit it, he was relieved that Harry didn’t blame Spider-man for his dad’s death. Even though he understood why Harry would blame Spider-man for what happened to Norman and was ready to silently shoulder the blame he was happy that Harry didn’t excuse any of his dad’s actions.

Back to reality, Peter placed a hand on Harry’s shoulder “You know they say times like these are the best places to start over. And we’re hitting our senior year of high school soon.”

“That’s right, we’re actually gonna be adults soon. Though I’m pretty sure you’ve been an adult since your Uncle died.” Harry said sympathetically

“We’ve been pretty bad friends to each other lately, Harry.”

Harry raised a single eyebrow “We? I think you’re blaming yourself a little too hard there, Peter. Like I said, my dad was right on thing- I have to man up.”

“I don’t think your dad’s the best role model here.” Peter noted

“I don’t mean like that. I mean that I can’t stop drifting through life and blame other people for my problems. I have to be decisive and take hold of what I want. And what I want is to make sure the people I care about are happy. That means Gwen, my mom, and you, Peter.”

“So we agree? We’re gonna be better friends from now on. Though we probably won’t hang out with each other as much as we did when we were younger with how much work I’m gonna have to do with the Bugle”

“Don’t sweat it, I’m gonna be spending all my time dealing with Oscorp’s future and what little free time I have being a better boyfriend to Gwen.” Harry paused, “Um, sorry for making you a lower priority.”

“Don’t sweat it either. I would have punched you if you didn’t put Gwen over me. On your orders.”

Harry shot Peter a smile “That’s true. Alright, I gotta meet up with some of my dad’s old business partners. They flew in from a bunch of different countries to show up here and not taking some time to meet them would damage Oscorp’s relationship with them.”

“Oh yeah, the Daily Bugle covered that.”

“Yeah, there’s so many people flying in that the entire Aman is booked just for Oscorp’s business partners!” Harry exclaimed “Anyway, it’s time to talk to them. Wish me luck!”

“Knock 'em dead, Harry!” As Harry walked away Peter knew that he would have to keep a close eye on the Aman as Spider-man. All those billionaire moguls in one building would be catnip for so many criminals

Despite all that happened in the last month or so, Peter was actually feeling pretty alright. After all that happened with Norman Osborne, something he thought would irreparably destroy his relationship with his best friend, Harry. But for the first time in years, it seemed like Harry was somewhat at peace.

It was morbid to think about considering that his dad just died but Norman was a toxic person. Peter had to shamefully admit that he was blind to Norman’s flaws because Norman always treated him so well, almost like a second son. Norman even went as far as to take the blame for Harry’s rampage as the Green Goblin and go to jail himself.

All that changed when Peter found out that Norman was the Green Goblin himself and broke Harry’s leg to make his lie more convincing. Harry didn’t deserve a father like that and he was glad that his best friend was free of that monster.

Although that did interfere with his and Gwen’s plan to finally get together. He had already broken up with Liz after realizing that he loved Gwen but after all that stuff with Harry happened, Gwen couldn’t bring herself to break up with him. How could she?

The silver lining of all that was Harry’s change of attitude. Harry made him promise that he would punch him in the face if he neglected or mistreated Gwen. It seemed like Harry really was turning over a new leaf and becoming a better person. Maybe Gwen and Harry would get their own happy ending that the both of them deserved. Peter was fine with that even if he got left out

Plus, Aunt May’s second cookbook just got published and she got a sweet deal!

It was almost fitting that the one time Peter was expecting Parker Luck to rear its ugly head, things were actually looking up. But right now, he wasn’t Peter Parker, nerdy soon to be high school senior but New York’s favorite hero…well, outside The Fantastic Four

Even Spider-man’s job seemed pretty easy lately. There was no Goblin to deal with and Gobbie pretty much took over all of Tombstone’s power and territory after Tombstone was arrested and his criminal empire and legitimate connections crumbled. That incident also roped in the old Mafia Boss Silvermane and even Doc Ock tried his hand in becoming the Big Man of crime

Somehow all three of them were knocked down on the same night. Peter wasn’t dumb and knew this relative peace wouldn’t last though as he remembered Captain George Stacy’s words. Nature really does abhor a vacuum and it wouldn’t be long before a new threat would introduce itself. He went from dealing with crime lords with good publicity to a crazed billionaire in powered armor so hopefully things wouldn’t escalate even further.

But for now, all Spider-man had to deal with were petty thieves and low level thugs. After getting word from Harry that some of the richest people in the world were staying in the Aman for the next couple of days. Of course that meant security would be massively amped up as well. Normally Peter would worry about guys like Rhino and Sandman crashing the hotel for some cash but Rhino was in jail and Sandman sacrificed his life to save innocent people. It was testament to the fact that anyone could turn over a new leaf and it was never too late for a second chance.

Unfortunately, most crooks weren’t as noble as Flint Marko. Peter was swinging around the Aman knowing that the smart thieves weren’t at ground level where everyone could see them but high up in the air where only a web-slinger could.

Peter knew that Black Cat would try to test her luck and steal from the guests of the Aman, what self-respecting jewelry thief wouldn’t? A few months ago, Peter would have left Black Cat off with a warning. That was back when they had a “friendly enemy” sort of relationship that involved flirting…lots of flirting. Sure she had her ulterior motives with helping him deal with guys like Chameleon but she always saw their partnerships through the end instead of abandoning him when she was within arm's reach of what she wanted.

But none of that mattered anymore

Black Cat hated him for refusing to bust out her father, Walter Hardy, an infamous cat burglar in his own right. Maybe under different circumstances, Peter would have obliged and helped free the old man who would probably have been harmless. But Walter Hardy wasn’t just some old man who made mistakes, he was the slinking coward that killed Uncle Ben just for his car. Whatever sentence that scumbag got was too easy

Of course that meant Black Cat now hated him too but Peter was fine with that. Okay, that isn’t the whole truth. He wanted to tell Black Cat the truth of why he hated her father so much, and he didn’t exactly know why. Maybe it’s because he wanted to have someone else he could rely on fighting crime. Or maybe it was because they had a nice friendship going on despite being on opposite sides of the law. It didn’t matter anymore because there was no way he was going to reveal his secret identity.

As Felicia Hardy rappelled down the building and was just outside the room in which Christopher Norwood, a high level Roxxon was staying. As she prepared to cut open the window with one of her claws, a blast of webs stuck her hand against the window. She was hoping that she wouldn’t run into Spider-man but it’s not like she wasn’t expecting it.

“Did you really think I wouldn’t be here now?” Spider-man questioned

Black Cat quickly cut open the webbing with her free hand and turned towards Spider-man “Are you wasting time foiling burglaries? What? Still trying to sway me on the hero side?” she spat

“No, I’m here to bring criminals to justice.” Spider-man replied tersely, devoid of his usual charm. He wanted to make sure Black Cat knew that he had no regrets over what happened to her father

Black Cat was actually a bit stunned by just how serious Spider-man was, but she quickly shook herself out of it. She’s the one who told him she would never forgive him, and he was simply returning the same energy. She couldn’t complain now.

“You helped me a couple of times so I’ll cut you a deal- if you cut your losses and go home, I’ll let you go, no questions asked so I could take you to jail the next time I catch you trying to steal something.” Spider-man explained

“I’ve been doing what I’m good at longer than you’ve been playing pretend in your jammies so don’t humor me.”

Spider-man hoped that Black Cat could somehow see him roll his eyes “Cat, you’re hanging by a rope twenty stories above the ground. If your rope snaps, you’re dead. I could just web sling away if something happens to me. This isn’t a fair fight.”

“I’m not gonna die because I know a goody two shoes like you will catch me no matter what I do.” Felicia bit back

Spider-man didn’t even attempt to deflect that remark “You’re right, I would never kill anyone. I’m not Walter Hardy.”

This was a step too far for Black Cat and she lunged at Spider-man. Fighting like this usually wasn’t her style but she couldn’t let that bastard mock her father after what he did. Spider-man reacted quickly and jumped backwards before using his webs to zip back on to the building. He then began walking on the side with the same ease as a normal person would walk on the ground.

This show of confidence didn’t deter Black Cat as she continued to lunge at him. She was somehow still agile with a cable tied to her waist. Spider-man fought with Black Cat a couple of times but he never really had to fight against her since she preferred to make stealthy escapes. Even though he found his fair share of supervillains, fighting someone who was somehow as acrobatic as him with no super powers put him on the backfoot if only so he could get a read on her.

He tried webbing one of her limbs to the ground but her claws were somehow able to slice them through.

“You didn’t think I’d study that crap you shoot out?” Black Cat growled as she continued her attack

Despite the situation, Peter was impressed that Black Cat managed to snag some web to study despite the fact that he made sure they’d dissolve after a couple of hours. Either she worked fast or she was smart enough to make sure the webs didn’t dissolve so she could study them thoroughly. Come to think of it, a lot of Black Cat’s gadgets seemed custom-made so it would make sense that she’d be the ones working on them.

Peter was so lost in thought that he only narrowly avoided a claw swipe. There wasn’t any time to marvel at his opponent's skill. Now it was the time to fight. Peter caught the next claw swipe aimed at his face before flipping Black Cat over, tangling her up in her own rappel wire. Black Cat was so focused on the battle that she didn’t bother to untangle herself. That gave Peter the idea to end this battle quickly. Peter made sure to be on the defensive, always reacting and redirecting Black Cat’s moves, further tangling her in her own rappel wire. Before Black Cat knew it, she was tangled up in her own rappelling wire like an actual cat who made a mess with a ball of yarn

Peter couldn’t help but smirk under his mask. It felt pretty good seeing the previously unflappable, cool under pressure Black Cat trapped.

“I guess cutting your losses and going home isn’t an option anymore.” Peter snarked under his breath. That seemed to further agitate Black Cat as struggled increased. Unfortunately, she wasn’t aware that one of her legs was relatively free from the tangled mess and the claw on her foot cut the wire connecting her body to the rappel point clean off, plunging her down the building

Peter didn’t hesitate to dive off down to try to save her. While any spark of camaraderie they might have had was gone, he would never let anyone die…not even her father.

Spider-man used his webs to slingshot himself way past terminal velocity to catch Black Cat. For a brief moment, there was a look on her face that one could only describe as confusion and gratitude staining her features. Confusion because of her shock that Spider-man would still save her instead of letting her die in a guilt free manner. After all, he wasn’t the one who cut her rope, it was her mistake. Gratitude because she was simply glad to be alive.

Once she was safe in Spider-man’s arms, Black Cat remembered why she hated him. Her face twisted into a snarl as she swiped her claw at his face. Since she wasn’t tangled in her own rope or caught off guard, she could easily grip onto the sides of her building to slow her descent after she gave Spider-man the beating he deserved.

But Black Cat miscalculated the distance and her claws barely grazed Spider-man. Instead they dug into his mask and she inadvertently ripped the mask off of his face.

Felicia Hardy never cared about who was under the mask. When they were allies…well, friendly enemies, she enjoyed the mystique of the man under the mask and decided that knowing who he looked like would ruin said mystique. After all, he never asked her who she was even when they fought so it’s not like he cared either. When Spider-man made sure his father would rot in jail for the rest of his life she didn’t care who was under the mask for a different reason- it didn’t matter because she now hated Spider-man

But Felicia Hardy was wrong…Oh so very wrong

When Felicia saw that it was none other than Peter Parker under the mask, everything made sense to her. Did her father know who Spider-man was? Was this the reason why he asked her to look into the man that he killed? To know the family that Walter Hardy fractured? Was this the reason why her father didn’t argue with Spider-man, try to run, or fight back? Was this the reason why her father was at peace when she visited him in jail?

Felicia told herself that nothing Spider-man can do to make her extinguish her hatred. But she never thought of Peter Parker. In an instant, her white heart fury dulled and she lost control of her emotions. She couldn’t operate under these conditions and had to leave.

Felicia threw the mask back at Spider-man’s face and he could only react with a surprised yelp as it hit his face before blowing into the wind. Spider-man let her go to chase after his mask and that was her opportunity to escape. By the time Spider-man put his mask back on, Felicia Hardy was gone
