Chapter 1: Part of you knew

Chapter Text

The crowd roared, people standing up from the bleachers. “What a clutch from the feral boys!!” the announcer cheered over the deafening crowd. Bright billboard lights flashed ‘27-26’. Bright purple players gathered together, chanting in union.

But Tommy only had an eye for one, Dream, in all his glory getting lifted up, soft curls bouncing with every movement. He moved quickly, going behind the bleachers.

Their spot.

Bouncing on his feet, he hummed, eager to congratulate his…

Tommy frowned, they weren't lovers, but they weren't just friends either. What exactly were they then?

“Gee, don't look too excited now.”

Snapping out of his thoughts, he looked toward the voice, smiling brightly when he met deep green eyes. “Shut up.” He managed to get out before Dream pulled him in by the waist, kissing him with fervor. Muffled giggles slipped out, causing Dream to pull away slightly. “Why are you laughing?” he questioned with a grin on his face, pressing their foreheads together “Nothing, im just..happy.” Tommy whispered, “You're coming to the after party right?” asked the green-eyed blonde.

Dream scrunched gel cream into the curls on his head while George and Sapnap talked on the bed.

“Hey Dream?” Sapnap called out, he hummed to acknowledge he heard him but continued to fix his hair. “What exactly are you and Tommy? Are you not planning to make it official?” Dream paused, hands hovering as he turned to face his best friends.

He didn't really think they needed a label.

George rolled his eyes and leaned forward “Please don't lead Tommy on, that would cause tension between the team.” Sapnap nodded persistently “Not to mention he's really sweet, and he brings these really yummy pastries! Better than any of your other situationships or exes.” The dark-haired emphasized the statement whilst munching on the cookies Tommy had given Dream that day.

Those were his cookies from Tommy.

His brows furrowed, staring at Sapnap for a little too long to just be normal “I don't know… I'm not sure he would want a label. Besides we're just…”

Friends couldn't work, that would make them too casual. Yet lovers wasn't exactly a word to describe what Dream and Tommy had.

The pair shared a glance before looking back at Dream

“Just…?” urged Sapnap, “Nevermind, just drop it guys. He's not.. I wouldn't.. forget it.” He faltered before going back to getting ready. George sighed “I hope you know what you're getting into Dream. We trust your intentions.”

He sighed “I’d never do that to him. He's…different, okay? Now quit eating the cookies he gave me.” Dream’s eyes narrowed into slits, scaring Sapnap into closing the tin box. “This is the greed they talk about in the bible.” He whines and collapses on George.

He’ll ask Tommy what they are later. They never really established that, but he hopes they're something more.

Sapnap cheered in a sing-song manner “Party Time–!” earning himself a smack from the brunette beside him “Ow-! What was that for?!” He rubbed his arm pouting “Get off me.” George grunted, voice scarily monotone.

“Okay everybody let's get this party started!” Jack’s voice booming over the loud speakers

Everywhere reeked of alcohol, people cheered nearby a beer-pong table, a chorus of “Chug, Chug, Chug!” a small circle of people by the couch, a bottle spinning at the center of it all. He walked past with indifference, grabbing a bottle of beer for himself. “Ayee well if it isn't the star player–!” called out a dark haired man. “Quackity!” drawled out Dream, their hands meeting to dap.

“Enjoying the party?” he queried, Dream rolled his eyes grinning smug “Of course, though I'm looking for ‘someone’— have you seen him perchance?” The beanied man only quirked a brow and smirked, “Not yet, no.. but I’m sure he’ll turn up, lover boy.” Quackity left him a slap on the back, not giving the other a chance to protest.

“Lover boy” They weren't lovers, he doesn't know why everyone else seems to think they are.

“AYEE SCHLATT–!!”

Dream only shook his head, he turned back to continue searching when something—someone bumped into him. “Eouuf–!”

The girl looked up, slurring her words “O-oh! Dream! Con..uhh...congrats on your win!” A mix of some fruity cocktail lingered in the air, her chest pressed up against him uncomfortably. His eyes glanced down, he briefly remembers seeing her in chemistry class and getting in trouble with her group of friends. He grimaced “Uh…yeah thanks.. excuse me I need to find someone—” she wrapped her arms around his neck.

“Stay a minute….”

Dream growled “Look, I really need to find the person I'm looking for—” “Shh..” she interrupted as she leaned in closer, “Whoever it is, they're unimportant right now..” Ignoring her attempts at flirting, his eyes scanned the room, “Listen- Keisha was it? Can you please let go, I'm not in the mood to deal with you right now I need to—”

Dream jolted, frozen in place.

There, from across the room in the middle of a swimming crowd, a red streak in blonde curls and blue sparkling eyes that locked with his own emerald hue.

“Oooh! Alright everybody—we got our first singer of the night! Give it up—for… NIKKI!!” Faintly blurring into the background, Jack’s voice came through.

His mind had scattered into a ramble of words, stomach twisting into a gigantic knot.

‘Shit–shit, shit, shit, SHIT!

Tommy turned around and was disappearing into the wave of people quickly. Dream shoved her off aggressively with a snarl “Learn to keep your hands to yourself.” She fell back onto a couch with a grumble.

I was hopin’ you would come through

With that, he turned to chase Tommy hoping to explain himself, “Excuse me—sorry, passing by!” Pushing through the sea of bodies frantically.

Only threw this party for you

Niki singing combined with the music blasted through the speakers, distorted and muffled in his ears, people glaring at him with every shove.

Party on you

None of that mattered right now, what did matter was getting to the blonde and explaining everything, maybe even begging for forgiveness once he catches up.

‘Stupid, stupid, stupid–!!’

Party on you

Dream was lost in his thoughts, he doesn't even know why Tommy is upset and running off, nor does he know why this is upsetting him so much.

'It's not like we're dating—we're just…’

What were they?

‘..friends. Just friends.’

Party on you

By the time he made it through, Tommy was gone.

‘Well shit.

Party on you Part of you knew.
