Work Text:

The first time Satoru saw Megumi going out with Yuuji, he was a bit surprised, that's all. But he did see it happening, when Yuuji first enrolled in Jujutsu Tech.

He watches Megumi drag himself out of bed, spend an hour in the shower—twenty minutes that of spent sitting on the toilet and staring empty on the tiles—and the rest a complete body bath.

"You're going out?" Satoru asks, looking at Megumi on the mirror.

Megumi moves like a ghost, hands slow. Grips the comb with strength there lacking. Tries his best to tame his unruly hair, to no avail. They've always been messy, and it is only Satoru who was able to fix them.

Megumi gives up with a sigh, eyes landing on Satoru pinned to the side. "I'm going out."

Satoru smiles. "Have fun."

"I'll try to have fun," Megumi says. "With Yuuji."

"Of course." Satoru reaches over, but stops midway. "You'll be late if you don't go now, we know Yuuji is an excitable one."

"I'll be going." Megumi stands up. His fingers trace over Satoru's face on the mirror. "I'll come home soon."

Megumi turns and leaves the house.

Satoru smiles bitterly. "I'll always be with you, Megumi-chan."

And so Satoru follows Megumi wherever he goes.

And it happens every week. Megumi would go out with Yuuji, dates that the pink-haired teen sets up. Every other week turns to every other day. Satoru watches behind them through all of it, even without the Six Eyes. He sees every little detail from Megumi.

Sees the way he flushes whenever Yuuji sneakily intertwines their fingers, the way he'll smile when Yuuji hands him a random stuffed toy in the department store—declaring he's going to buy it for Megumi as a gift. Satoru watches Megumi fall in love with Yuuji.

Megumi returns well into the night with a small smile on his face.

"I'll see you tomorrow, Megumi!" Yuuji shouts from the outside. Megumi chuckles under his breath.

Megumi washes himself and gets ready for bed. He sits in front of his vanity mirror and glances at Satoru on the side.

"Hey," Megumi says, his smile turning sad. "Yuuji took me to the zoo today."

"I know," Satoru immediately answers. "I saw. You were in awe with the penguins."

"I loved the penguins."

"You used to love the wolves more."

There's silence. Megumi reaches up and cradles Satoru's face. "I love you."

"I love you too," Satoru whispers before he's tucked back in the small, photo album in the lowest cabinet drawer.

At last, Megumi's world has changed. It's only Satoru that is forced to remain the same. Megumi has fallen in love with someone else, someone that isn't Gojo Satoru.

But hey, that's a good thing.

Megumi doesn't cry himself to sleep every night anymore. He doesn't spend half an hour in the toilet staring at space. He wouldn't have to rot in bed and feel guilty for Satoru's death.

A miracle: Megumi forgets everything. Slowly, he starts forgetting about that day. The day he cradled Satoru's face, half the body of the entire person he loved, and cried, "Hey, why'd you lose? You promised me! How dare you leave me!"

"I loved you—!" Those words Megumi uttered to his cold corpse, broken and devastated, he had forgotten them. Unspoken feelings way too late to bloom. That is a good thing.

Because Satoru has always had these feelings of guilt. He made promises to Megumi that he was not able to keep—so it's okay for him to erase everything. It's okay for Megumi to forget.

It's just a bit nostalgic, seeing Megumi doing the things they used to do with someone else. Holding hands, laughing at silly little things, and talking about random topics...

Satoru was too selfish in protecting Megumi that he ended up losing him still.

Satoru can still remember the first time Megumi cried for him. He thought he'd be reborn, a white phoenix rising from the ashes of Sukuna's massacre, but Enma has other plans for him.

But that's okay. Echoes of Satoru's voice no longer reaches Megumi's mind. He no longer haunts his waking moments.

This is a good thing.

Finally, Satoru feels his body grow colder. It's time to bid his farewell.

Megumi tucks himself to bed. Satoru follows, hovering over Megumi, his body translucent. The moon shines through him.

"Good bye and good night, Megumi." Satoru disappears.
