Work Text:

She almost didn't go to him.

She'd told herself she wasn't going to — had made the decision firmly, rationally, while standing in the long corridor outside the library stacks with the invoking stone in her fist and Clotho's quiet voice still in her ears. *It belongs with you, Gwyn. It always has.* As if that settled anything. As if Clotho's certainty could replace her own, could fill the hollow place where certainty should have lived and didn't, had not lived for a very long time now.

The stone was warm in her palm. She didn't know why it was warm. Stones weren't warm. Stones were the opposite of warm. But this one pulsed with the slow, steady rhythm of something alive — healing, the texts said. Protection. The power of the Mother flowing through the consecrated blue-violet mineral and out through the hands of whichever priestess was worthy enough to channel it. A focus, like the Illyrian siphons but gentler in purpose, incapable of harm.

She'd been carrying it for four days.

She had not put it on in four days, not once, because every time she lifted the chain toward her neck something in her chest closed like a fist around the attempt and she couldn't — couldn't complete the motion, couldn't cross that particular distance, couldn't stand in front of the thing the Mother had apparently decided was hers and simply *accept it.*

The other priestesses accepted it. Clotho had watched her with those careful, thoughtful hands and said nothing that could be called judgment. Nesta would have said something sharp and true that Gwyn would have needed three days to fully absorb. Emerie would have made her laugh until she forgot what she was afraid of.

She went to Azriel.

She went up the stairs to the House of Wind where he'd been assigned rooms since the war, where she'd been sitting across from him at training for eight months and eating meals across from him in the House's kitchen and pretending, with increasingly unconvincing effort, that she didn't know exactly where in any room he was at all times. Up the corridor that seemed longer tonight than it ever had before. Past the room where Cassian's snoring was a faint and deeply undignified rumble through the stone. Past the room where Nesta slept with her cats in a quiet that Gwyn found profound and almost sacred.

She stood outside his door for a long time. Long enough that her hand cramped around the invoking stone. Long enough that she considered turning around three separate times and talked herself back into staying each time with arguments that got progressively weaker until the only one left was simply: *I want to.*

Then she knocked.

"Come in."

His voice came through the wood, low and unsurprised, as though he'd known she was standing out there and had been waiting for her to decide.

She pushed the door open.

He was sitting on the floor — back against the foot of the bed, one knee drawn up, mission reports spread around him in that contained, organized way of his where everything had its place even when scattered across the rug. He was still dressed: dark trousers that clung to his powerful thighs, a loose dark shirt with the sleeves pushed to his elbows exposing his scarred forearms. His feet were bare. His wings were tucked and resting, the membrane dark in the lamplight. The cobalt siphons and Truth-Teller lay on the nightstand, dark and quiet and at rest.

He looked up when she came in. His shadows — which had been moving lazily along the walls until that moment, drifting like smoke — went still, and then drifted toward her the way they always did. Curious. Certain. They wound around her ankles like cats, like they were greeting her.

He took her in with one long, unhurried sweep of his gaze. Her plain grey sleep robe. Her unbound auburn hair falling loose past her shoulders. Her bare feet on his floor. Her clenched fist holding something he couldn't see yet but had probably already guessed at.

"Sit down," he said.

Not a question. Not precisely a command, either. The register of his voice that lived just past suggestion, that he used when he'd already decided something was happening and was now managing the terms of it. She'd catalogued that particular tone over eight months of training.

She sat beside him on the floor without consciously deciding to move, crossing her legs, her back against the bed's foot beside his. Close enough to feel the warmth that came off Illyrian males like a steady, low-banked fire. Close enough to smell him — leather and night-blooming flowers and something darker underneath, something that was just *him*.

Neither of them spoke for a moment. The silence stretched, but it wasn't uncomfortable. It was the kind of silence that felt like two people existing in the same space without needing to perform for each other.

"Show me," he said finally.

She opened her fist.

The invoking stone lay in her palm, and in the low lamplight it was extraordinary — blue-violet at the center, deep and complex, the luminescence within it moving the way light moved through water rather than the way lamplight behaved against solid things. The chain was thin and silver, delicate in a way that seemed almost at odds with the power it was meant to channel. She'd been holding it long enough tonight that it was warm from her skin rather than its own nature, and the distinction felt like something she should know about herself: she could warm things she was afraid to claim, apparently, without claiming them.

"I can't put it on," she said. The first time she'd said it plainly, to anyone, without deflection or humor or the careful brightness she used to keep people from looking too closely. "I keep trying. I lift the chain and then something in me — stops. Every single time." She paused, turned the stone between her fingers and watched the light move. "Four days."

Azriel looked at the stone for a long moment. Then: "Why."

Not *why can't you.* Just *why.*

"You know why."

"Tell me anyway."

She thought about deflecting. She was good at deflecting — had spent two years in the library getting excellent at it, had learned to keep her brightness at the surface like a shield, to smile with the face she'd rebuilt and let the smile carry the weight so no one had to look at what was underneath. She didn't do that with him anymore. She'd stopped doing it with him sometime around the fourth month of training when she'd realized he saw through it every single time without comment, which was more disarming than any direct challenge would have been.

"It's for healing," she said carefully, choosing each word with precision. "And protection. Things that require—" she turned the stone again, watching the light pulse— "worthiness. A vessel has to be worthy of what it carries. That's what the texts say. That's what Clotho said when she gave it to me, even if she said it differently." She swallowed. "Catrin should have worn it. Catrin was — she was better than me. Kinder. More genuinely holy, if that's a thing that can be said about a person without sounding ridiculous. She would have put it on the day she was given it and it would have lit for her immediately and no one would have questioned it for a second." Her voice stayed steady. She'd cried these words empty months ago, into pillows and into Nesta's shoulder and once, memorably, into the stone floor of a library alcove at three in the morning. "I stayed behind in Sangravah and my sister died in front of me and I couldn't — I didn't — and I have never been able to stop hearing the exact sound it made when his sword—"

"Stop." Azriel's voice was very quiet. Absolute.

She stopped.

He looked at the stone in her palm, and the lamp threw warm amber light over the side of his face, catching the hard line of his jaw and the shadows under his cheekbones, and when he finally spoke his voice was the low, relentless kind she associated with the version of him that had stopped being patient about something.

"Catrin died because a Hybern general wanted information you refused to give him," he said, each word deliberate and unrushed. "She died because of what was done to her — not because of what you did or didn't do, not because of some divine accounting about worthiness, not because the Mother looked at the two of you and made some judgment about who deserved to survive." He finally looked at her, and his hazel eyes were dark in the lamplight, almost brown. "You have been treating her death as a verdict about you for two years. It isn't. It was never yours to absorb as judgment. It was done *to* you, Gwyn, not *by* you."

"In my head—"

"Your head isn't the problem." He held her gaze steadily. "Your head knows the truth. It's the rest of you that's still carrying the weight."

She had to look at the floor. At her bare feet on his rug. At the way his shadows were still moving around her ankles like they were trying to offer comfort in the only way they knew how.

He was quiet for a moment. Then he reached over and took the stone from her palm — carefully, unhurried, his scarred fingers brushing hers in the transfer — and held it in his own hand, turning it once, twice, watching the light in it move through the shadow he carried with him everywhere.

"You glow when you sing," he said.

"Everyone keeps saying that."

"Because it matters and because you apparently need to hear something seventeen times before you allow it to be true." Under the dry delivery was something that was not dry at all, something rough-edged and honest. "Your power is already there, Gwyn. The stone isn't granting you access to something outside yourself. It's a key. A focus point for what is already inside you." He held it up between them in the amber light, the blue-violet glow catching against his palm. "And what's inside you has nothing to do with whether Catrin lived or died. You've linked those things in your head and told yourself the link was logic. It isn't logic. It's grief, and grief isn't the same thing as truth."

She opened her mouth to argue.

He raised an eyebrow — just one, the way he did in training when he'd already won the point and was waiting for her to realize it.

She closed her mouth.

He looked at her for a long moment, and something in his expression shifted — something that had been carefully held in place for a very long time loosening, coming undone at the edges.

"Take off your robes," he said.

The room rearranged itself entirely around those words.

She looked at him. He looked back — even, certain, his eyes dark in the lamplight with something that had been building in them for longer than she'd allowed herself to track. Not teasing. Not performing anything for her benefit or his own. Just watching her with the quality of attention that was his and only his — the particular focused intensity of a male who had decided what he was doing and was now doing it with complete investment.

"Azriel—"

"Your robes." His voice had gone quieter, which was somehow a different kind of weight than loud would have been. "All of them. I want you bare when you put that stone on. Nothing between you and it. No layers, no armor, no habit of keeping yourself at a careful distance from what you feel." He held her gaze, unwavering. "And because I want to see you. I have wanted to see you for months and I am done practicing restraint about it."

The last sentence came out rougher than the rest, with a ragged edge to it. She could hear the truth in it — the specifically *tired* quality of someone who had been holding something in reserve for a very long time and had finally decided to put it down.

Her hands moved to the ties of her outer robe.

She kept her eyes on his face while she loosened them, while her fingers worked the knots she'd tied earlier in the evening when she'd still been pretending she wasn't going to come here. He watched her hands, then her face, and the shadows around him stilled completely — all of them, arrested mid-motion like a held breath. The outer robe fell from her shoulders and pooled behind her on the floor.

The inner robe followed.

She hesitated with her hands at the hem of her shift — the thin linen the only thing left between her and his gaze — and for a moment the old instinct rose sharp and familiar. The one she was still, carefully, patiently unlearning with Nesta's help and Emerie's and her own stubborn refusal to let what had been done to her keep defining what she was allowed to want. *Stop here. Don't. Cover yourself. Make yourself smaller. You've already given too much.*

It had protected her for a long time. She didn't hate it for that. She understood why it existed, why she'd needed it. But she also knew what it had cost her, what it had kept her from, and she had been choosing — slowly, incrementally, over eight months — to choose differently.

She pulled the shift over her head.

The lamplight moved across her bare skin.

Azriel looked at her the way the invoking stone looked in the dark: like something luminous and complex and profound, the surface only the beginning of what was actually there. She waited for the instinct to flinch or apologize or fold in on herself. It didn't come. She was kneeling in his lamplight, in his room, at her own deliberate choice, and her body was hers. Had always been hers, even when it had been taken from her, had still been hers underneath the violation, was still hers now. And the way he was looking at her was the way something looked when it recognized what it had been searching for.

He didn't look away. He didn't perform not-looking, didn't give her the false courtesy of pretending he wasn't drinking in every inch of her. He looked with full, unhurried intention, his gaze moving over her slowly — her face, her throat, the line of her collarbone, down to her breasts.

He stopped there.

His jaw tightened. His hands, resting on his knees, curled into fists.

Her breasts were full and soft, the nipples peaked from the cool air or his attention or both. She'd never thought much about them before — they were simply part of her body, functional, unremarkable. But the way he was looking at them now, with an intensity that bordered on reverence mixed with pure, undisguised hunger, made her suddenly, acutely aware of them. Made her aware of her own body in a way she hadn't been in years.

His gaze continued downward — over the soft curve of her stomach, the flare of her hips, the auburn curls between her thighs — and when his eyes finally came back to hers they were darker than she'd ever seen them.

"Beautiful," he said finally, and the word came out rough and low, scraped from somewhere deep. "I want you to know I mean that. Not as a kindness. Not to make you feel better. As a fact. As something I have been thinking since approximately the third week of training and have been extraordinarily restrained about not saying."

She wanted to deflect. Wanted to make a joke or redirect or do any of the dozen things she'd learned to do when someone gave her a compliment she didn't know how to hold. She didn't. She held his gaze and said, "All right."

Something shifted in his expression. Something that looked almost like relief.

"Give me your hand," he said.

She held out her right hand, palm up.

He stood — unfolding from the floor with the fluid grace of someone who had spent centuries training his body to move efficiently — and came to stand in front of her. Up close he was extraordinary in the quiet way of things that didn't announce their extremity: the dark hair that fell across his forehead, the complex hazel eyes that looked almost entirely brown in lamplight, the wings that rose behind him like a second shadow, the scars that mapped his hands and his history. Five centuries of surviving things and continuing to survive them, all of it gathered into a male who was looking at her like she was the most important thing in any room he'd ever occupied.

He opened the hand that held the invoking stone and let the chain pool into her palm. She felt the warmth of it — the stone's warmth and the warmth from his hand, indistinguishable from each other now.

"Hold it," he said quietly. "Don't close your hand. Keep it open."

She kept her palm flat and open. The chain lay pooled there, the pendant resting in the center.

He reached for the ends of the chain with both hands.

He brought them up over her head slowly, with the same precise, deliberate care he gave to everything that mattered to him — to Truth-Teller, to his shadows, to the people he'd decided were his. She felt the chain brush her auburn hair, felt it lift away from her palm as he raised it, and then the cool silver was settling against the sides of her neck as he brought it down around her.

His hands went to the clasp at the back.

She felt his fingers in her hair, warm and deliberate and very certain, working the small silver clasp in the dark mass of her unbound hair. He was close enough that she could feel his breath against the back of her neck, could feel the heat of his body along her bare back, and she had to close her eyes against the intimacy of it — not because it was too much, but because it was exactly enough, exactly right, and she needed a moment to simply *feel* it without looking at it.

The clasp clicked shut.

The chain settled fully against her neck.

The pendant came to rest against the center of her chest, against the bare skin between her breasts, and for a single suspended moment nothing happened — just the weight of it, the warmth, the slow steady pulse she'd felt in her palm.

Then something unlocked.

Not metaphorically. *Physically.* In her chest, in her bones, in the spaces between where she kept things she'd learned not to reach for. A door she had been standing in front of for two years swinging open — not because she'd finally forced it, not because she'd earned the right through suffering, but because she'd finally stopped blocking it, had finally stopped telling herself she didn't deserve what was on the other side.

And on the other side was not emptiness or absence or the ghost of Catrin's judgment.

On the other side was her own power. Her own light. Waiting with a patience she had not deserved and had been given anyway.

She was glowing.

Not the shy shimmer she sometimes noticed during the evening services when she sang the old hymns. She was *radiant* — the blue-violet light spilling from the pendant outward across her collarbone and up her throat, warm and steady, and from her skin too, from underneath it, her own light rising to meet the stone's light the way a voice rose to meet a note it had been waiting to sing.

Her river-nymph blood. Her unknown father's High Fae blood. Her own particular soul. All of it resonating with the stone, amplified by it, *seen* by it in a way she hadn't been seen in a very long time.

"Oh," she said softly, and heard her own voice differently than usual — resonant, layered with something beneath it.

Azriel was still standing behind her, very close, and when she opened her eyes and looked down at herself she could see the glow spreading further — down across her breasts, her stomach, her thighs, everywhere the light could reach. She was luminescent in the lamplight, radiant in a way that had nothing to do with physical beauty and everything to do with *power.*

"There you are," Azriel said quietly, and the roughness in his voice undid something in her completely.

She reached for more of the power — tentatively at first, experimentally, the way you tested ice before stepping fully onto it. The stone blazed in immediate response, generous and unhesitating, the warmth flooding up through her chest and down her arms and she understood with her whole body rather than her reasoning mind that the two years of telling herself she was unworthy had not diminished what was hers by even a fraction. It had been here the entire time. Waiting. Patient. Certain.

She was crying before she understood she'd started.

Azriel's hands came to her shoulders from behind, warm and solid and grounding, and then he was turning her gently to face him and his hands came up to frame her face, his thumbs clearing the tears with careful, steady strokes. He didn't tell her to stop. Didn't reassure her immediately with platitudes that would have been kind but would have missed the point entirely. He just held her face and let her feel it — all of it. The grief that had been keeping itself at a careful distance from its own resolution. The relief. The disorienting recognition of herself as something she hadn't been able to look at directly in a very long time.

"I've got you," he said finally, when the worst of it had moved through her system. "I've got you. You're all right."

"I know." She pressed her hands flat against his chest, over his heart, steadying herself against the solid warmth of him. His heartbeat was faster than usual under her palm. She noticed this and stored it for later consideration. "I know I'm all right."

He looked down at her for a long moment, his hazel eyes dark and warm and entirely unguarded, and then he lowered his head and kissed her.

It began soft — a careful thing, almost tentative, his mouth moving over hers with the contained precision that characterized everything he did. She felt the warmth from the stone pulse outward in response to the contact, felt her own light surge brighter, and the feeling of it — the physical manifestation of her power responding to pleasure, to *want* — made her press closer.

His hands slid from her face to her hair, into it, fingers threading through the auburn mass and holding her steady while he kissed her more deeply. She opened for him and tasted him properly for the first time — night and shadow and something darker underneath, something that was uniquely him. His hands tightened in her hair and she felt the restraint in it, the particular tension of someone holding themselves in deliberate check.

She bit his lower lip, very lightly.

His control bent.

Not broke — Azriel didn't break, that was one thing she'd understood about him from eight months of watching him in training, watching him hold himself in check through every kind of provocation with that infuriating, extraordinary calm. But it bent sharply toward something that had been underneath the calm the entire time, something raw and honest and wanting.

His hands tightened in her hair and the kiss went from careful to consuming in the space of a single breath. She made a sound against his mouth — surprise and pleasure and something closer to demand — and felt him go still for exactly one second in response to it before he kissed her harder, deeper, with an intensity that made her knees weak.

His hands left her hair and moved to her body.

He touched her the way he did everything that mattered to him: with complete attention, with thorough focus, with the particular quality of someone who intended to learn every detail and remember it. His palms moved over her shoulders, tracing the line of them, down her arms and back up. Over her collarbone. Down her sternum, careful around the invoking stone that blazed between them.

To her breasts.

He cupped them in his scarred hands and she gasped into his mouth. His palms were warm and rough-textured from the old burns, and the sensation of that particular texture against her soft skin was almost unbearably good. He held her gently at first, almost reverently, his thumbs brushing over her nipples with a lightness that made her arch into the touch and want more, need more.

"Azriel—" His name came out broken.

"I know." His voice was rough against her mouth. "I know. Let me — just let me—"

He lowered his head.

His mouth found her breast and she stopped thinking in complete sentences.

He was thorough. He was devastatingly, impossibly thorough — the same focused intensity she'd seen in combat training, the same refusal to do anything at less than complete investment, all of it applied entirely to learning what made her breath catch, what made her spine arch, what made his name fall from her lips without her deciding to say it.

He kissed the soft inner curve of her breast, the underside, working his way slowly upward while his hand worked the other, and when his mouth finally closed over her nipple she made a sound she'd never made before — high and desperate and entirely involuntary.

The invoking stone blazed so brightly the shadows in the room cast themselves in two directions at once.

He lifted his head to look at her, and his eyes were very dark, pupils blown wide, his mouth wet from her skin.

"The stone," he said, something almost wondering in his voice despite the roughness of it. "It responds to you. To what you feel." He watched her face with intense focus. "Every time I—"

He touched her breast deliberately, rolling her nipple between his fingers with just enough pressure, and the stone flared brighter and she gripped his shoulders hard enough that she'd probably leave marks in his skin.

His eyes went darker.

"Beautiful," he said again, rougher now, the word scraped raw. "The most beautiful thing I've ever seen in five hundred years."

"Stop doing experiments," she managed, though her voice came out unsteady and breathless.

"I'm not experimenting." He kissed her temple, the corner of her jaw, her mouth. "I'm learning you. I've been waiting to learn you for a very long time and I'm not going to rush it."

He brought her down onto the bed.

She went willingly, pulling him with her, and he came down over her with his weight on his forearms, careful not to crush her but close enough that she could feel the heat of him all along her bare body. His wings spread slightly to bracket them, the membrane catching the blue-violet light from the stone and refracting it into something extraordinary.

They looked at each other in the low light for a long moment. Her glow catching the planes of his face, the hard line of his jaw, the way his hair fell across his forehead. His shadows moving softly above them on the ceiling, quiet and content and almost lazy in their movements.

"You know what this is," he said. Not a question.

"I know what this is," she confirmed.

"Not a kindness." His eyes were very steady on hers. "Not comfort. Not me trying to fix what was broken or give you something I think you need." He paused, and something in his expression was so raw it almost hurt to look at. "This is me telling you that you are mine and asking if you want to be."

She pressed her palm against his chest, over his heart. It was beating fast under her hand — quick and hard, the rhythm of it almost frantic despite the careful steadiness of his expression.

"I've been yours," she said, and meant it with every part of herself, "since you handed me your cloak in Sangravah and asked for nothing in return. I was just—" she considered, searching for the right words— "still becoming the version of me who could say so."

Something moved through his face. Something complicated and layered and true, something she was going to learn the name for given enough time.

"You became her," he said quietly.

"I became her," she agreed.

He kissed her again, and this time there was no gentleness in it at all — just want, raw and honest, the kind that had been building for months and was finally being allowed to exist without restraint. She kissed him back with equal intensity and reached for his shirt, pulling at it with impatient hands.

He pulled back just enough to strip it off over his head, and she had a moment to take in the sight of him — the broad chest and the old scars and the defined muscle that came from centuries of warrior training — before he was kissing her again, pressing her back into the mattress with delicious weight.

His mouth moved to her throat, sucking gently at her pulse point, and she tilted her head back to give him better access. He worked his way down — over her collarbone, the upper curve of her breast — and when he took her nipple into his mouth again this time he wasn't gentle about it. He sucked hard enough to make her cry out, hard enough that she felt it in the pit of her stomach, in the growing ache between her thighs.

The stone blazed brighter.

He switched to the other breast and gave it the same thorough, devastating attention, and she was writhing under him now, her hands in his dark hair, pulling, wordlessly demanding more.

"Azriel," she gasped. "Please—"

"What do you need?" His voice was wrecked, barely recognizable, all the careful control stripped away. "Tell me what you need and I'll give it to you."

"Touch me," she said, spreading her thighs wider in unmistakable invitation. "I need — I need you to touch me."

He kissed his way down her stomach, over her hip bones, settling himself between her thighs. His hands slid up the inside of her thighs, spreading them wider, and the first touch of his fingers against her pussy made them both groan.

She was already wet — slick and hot and ready for him in a way that apparently delighted him based on the sound he made low in his throat.

"Fuck," he breathed, stroking through her folds with careful, exploratory touches. "You're so wet. Is this all for me? Tell me this is for me."

"Yes," she managed, her hips lifting toward his hand. "Yes, it's for you, it's — gods, Azriel, please don't stop—"

He didn't stop.

He worked her with patient, focused attention, one scarred finger sliding inside her while his thumb found her clit and circled it with devastating precision. The dual sensation made her back arch off the bed, made her cry out his name into the lamp-lit room.

The invoking stone was blazing continuously now, the blue-violet light filling the entire room, and she could feel the power surging through her in waves that matched the rhythm of his hand between her thighs. Pleasure and power, inextricably linked, the same force in different forms.

He added a second finger and she cried out louder.

"That's it," he murmured, his voice dark and approving. "Let me hear you. I want to hear every sound you make."

She was close already — embarrassingly close, her body wound so tight she thought she might shatter from the tension — and when he curled his fingers inside her and found that spot deep inside that made her see stars, she came with a cry that echoed off the stone walls.

The orgasm crashed through her in waves, each one brighter and more intense than the last, the pleasure amplified by the power of the stone until she couldn't tell where one ended and the other began. The light from the stone blazed so brightly it was almost blinding, and she heard herself making sounds she'd never made before — high and desperate and completely uncontrolled.

Azriel worked her through it, his fingers relentless, drawing out every last tremor of pleasure until she was limp and gasping and gently pushing his hand away from oversensitivity.

"Beautiful," he said roughly, and she could hear the awe in his voice beneath the desire. "So fucking beautiful when you come. I want to see it again."

"I can't—" she started, but he was already moving down her body, his mouth trailing hot, open kisses over her stomach, her hip bones, the sensitive inside of her thigh.

When his mouth found her pussy she stopped being able to form words at all.

He licked into her with the same focused intensity he'd brought to everything else, his tongue flat and broad as he tasted her, learning what made her hips jerk and her hands fist in his hair and his name fall from her lips like a prayer or a curse. His tongue circled her clit with devastating precision while his fingers worked inside her, and the combination was almost more than she could survive.

The second orgasm built faster than the first, climbing higher and higher, and when it broke she screamed his name into the lamp-lit room and the invoking stone *sang* — an actual sound, a pure high note that resonated with her own voice and with the shadows in the room and with something deep inside Azriel that she couldn't name but could feel.

He worked her through it with his mouth and his fingers until she was trembling and oversensitive, and then he kissed his way back up her body and captured her mouth in a deep, claiming kiss that let her taste herself on his tongue.

"I need to be inside you," he said against her mouth, and the raw honesty of it, the specific desperation, made her pussy clench around nothing. "Tell me that's what you want. Tell me you want me."

"I want you," she said, reaching for the laces of his trousers with shaking hands. "I want you inside me. Please, Azriel, I need—"

He helped her with the laces, stripping off his trousers and smallclothes with efficient movements, and then he was bare too, and she had exactly three seconds to take in the sight of his cock — thick and hard and flushed dark at the tip, already leaking — before he was positioning himself at her entrance.

He paused, his eyes finding hers in the blue-violet light.

"Tell me if it's too much," he said, his voice strained with the effort of holding himself still. "Tell me if you need me to stop. Promise me, Gwyn."

"I promise." She cupped his face in her hands and held his gaze steadily. "I trust you. I told you I trust you. Now please—"

He pushed inside her slowly.

The sensation was overwhelming — the stretch of him, the fullness, the specific intimacy of having his cock inside her body, of being joined to him in the most fundamental way. She gasped and he stopped immediately, his whole body going rigid with the effort of not moving.

"Okay?" he gritted out through clenched teeth.

"Yes." She adjusted to the feel of him, rolling her hips experimentally, and they both groaned at the friction. "More. I need more."

He pulled back slowly and thrust back in, setting a rhythm that was careful at first, measured, giving her time to adjust to the size of him. But she didn't want careful. She wanted all of him — the controlled Azriel and the one underneath, the one who'd been holding himself in check for months and was finally being allowed to let go.

She wrapped her legs around his waist and pulled him deeper.

He groaned and lost some of that careful control, his hips snapping forward harder, faster.

"Yes," she encouraged, her nails digging into his shoulders. "Like that. Don't hold back."

He didn't hold back.

His rhythm became harder, more demanding, his cock driving into her pussy with deep, powerful thrusts that hit something inside her that made her see stars. The invoking stone blazed between them, the light pulsing in time with their movements, and the shadows in the room surged and retreated like a living thing, matching their rhythm.

"Gods," he groaned, his face buried in her neck, his breath hot against her skin. "You feel — I've imagined this, thought about this for months, and it's — you're—"

"Don't stop," she demanded, pulling his wings the way she'd discovered made him shudder. "Don't you dare stop, Azriel."

He shuddered and fucked her harder, his control fraying at the edges, and she could feel another orgasm building already, higher and more intense than the first two. The stone was blazing continuously, her whole body glowing with divine power, and she understood suddenly and irrevocably that this was what the Mother had been waiting for her to accept — not suffering, not pain, not worthiness earned through trauma, but *this.* Pleasure. Want. Being fully in her own body and choosing what she wanted without apology.

"Touch yourself," Azriel commanded roughly, pulling back enough to look at her, his eyes dark and wild. "I want to watch you touch yourself while I fuck you."

She slid her hand between their bodies and found her clit, circling it with shaking fingers. The sensation combined with the feeling of his cock inside her was almost unbearable, pleasure building on pleasure, and she cried out.

"That's it," he encouraged, his eyes locked on where they were joined, where her fingers worked her clit. "Let me see you. Let me see all of you."

The orgasm built and built and when it finally broke she thought she might actually die from the force of it. She came hard around his cock, her pussy clenching rhythmically, and the invoking stone sang again — that pure high note that resonated with everything holy and everything profane at once.

Azriel followed her over the edge with a groan that sounded like it was torn from somewhere deep inside him, his cock pulsing inside her as he spilled his release, and she held him through it, her arms around him and her legs wrapped around his waist and the stone blazing between them like a small sun.

For a long moment afterward they stayed like that, joined and shaking and breathing hard in the wreckage of what they'd done.

Then he carefully withdrew and gathered her against his chest, pulling the bedding over them both, and his wings arched loosely over them in that particular Illyrian gesture that was the equivalent of pulling someone you loved under your protection.

She pressed her hand over his heart and felt it beating steady and strong under her palm.

The invoking stone rested warm between her breasts, still lit, still pulsing its slow heartbeat rhythm.

"It's still active," she said softly, touching it with her fingertips.

"Mm." His voice was drowsy and satisfied, rougher than usual. "Is it bothering you?"

"No." She held the pendant lightly, feeling its warmth, its weight, its rightness. "It feels like something finally being exactly where it belongs."

He was quiet for a moment. Then his arm tightened around her waist.

"That's how you feel," she said, understanding settling over her like the wings above them. "When something is in the right place. That's what *mine* means. You've been saying it for months in the way you say everything — quietly, where I had to learn how to hear it."

His exhale was slow and warm against her hair.

"You learned," he said simply.

Outside, Velaris murmured toward the late hours of the night. The lamp burned low and would go out soon, but it wouldn't matter; she would still be glowing, would still be lit from the inside by the power that had always been hers and that she'd finally, *finally* allowed herself to claim.

She pressed her hand over his where it lay against her ribs and felt his fingers turn and lace through hers.

The Mother didn't make mistakes.

And neither, tonight, had she.
