Tam’s POV
Tam stood in the field next to Foxfire, after school. He finally had a moment to himself to calm down, and have some quiet.
“AAHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!” Someone screamed.
Before Tam could turn around, something hit him in the back of the legs, and he fell backward onto something that wasn't grass. Before he could figure it out, a boy with ice-blue eyes popped into his vision. He groaned. Of course it had to be Keefe.
“Want a ride?” Keefe asked.
“No. I was trying to get a minute to think.” Tam grumbled, trying to climb out of what he had identified as a wheelbarrow. But before he could, Keefe started running, knocking him back into the wheelbarrow.
“I just have to return this to the shed I borrowed it from.” Keefe told him.
“Borrowed?” Tam asked suspiciously.
“Stole for a short amount of time.”
“Can you just let me off here? The less time I have to hang out with you the better.” Tam grumbled.
This was true, but not for the reason Tam wanted Keefe to think. The more time Tam spent around Keefe, the more likely it was the empath would find out about his crush on him. And if that happened, best case scenario, Tam would never hear the end of it, worst case, the small friendship he had built with Keefe could be destroyed.
Tam was so lost in thought, he didn’t hear Keefe’s response, and didn’t see that they were almost at the shed. So when Keefe stopped, he fell out of the wheelbarrow.
Tam blushed as Keefe laughed, then stared in shock when Keefe offered his hand to help him up. After a few seconds, he grabbed Keefe’s hand, feeling butterflies in his stomach. After standing up, he looked at Keefe to see what he was going to say, but Keefe had a strange look on his face. He sort of looked… surprised. Then Tam remembered Keefe was an empath, and knew what Tam had felt when he took his hand. Tam turned red, mumbled something unintelligible, and started to walk away, when Keefe grabbed his arm.
“The, uh, light in there is too high up to reach, and, uh, my levitation isn’t that good, so could you…?” Keefe said, tripping over his words.
“Uh, yeah, sure.” Tam said, confused. Why would Keefe want to keep him around? He shrugged off the thought, and went inside. Keefe followed him, pointing out the light. Tam levitated up, and turned it on. At the same time, the wind slammed the door shut. But... it wasn't windy out?
Keefe’s POV
“BIANA AMBERLY VACKER, LET US OUT!!!” Keefe yelled, banging on the door.
“Nope!” Biana replied.
“Not until you ask him.” Another voice that he recognized as Fitz told him.
He knew he shouldn’t have told Fitz he liked Tam. Fitz had obviously gone to Biana asking for help, and told her too. Keefe sighed.
“Ask me what?” Tam asked, landing back on the ground.
“Um…”
“Just ask him, Keefe. You can’t get out of this.” Biana sang.
“You are absolutely evil.” He yelled at her.
“Just do it, Keefe.” Fitz said.
“Alright, alright, just give me a minute of quiet!” Keefe said.
Keefe decided he needed to gather up his confidence. He thought about the butterflies he’d felt from Tam when he grabbed his hand. He thought about how Tam obviously had to work hard to stay looking grumpy whenever Keefe laughed. He thought about how Tam blushed whenever Keefe flirted with him. He decided this might actually work out.
“Okay.” Keefe said.
“YES!!!” Fitz and Biana shouted.
“So, what is it?” Tam asked, when they were done.
“Uh, will you go out with me?” Keefe said.
Tam’s POV
Tam stared, shocked. Did Keefe really like him? Or was this a prank?
“Uh, well, it’s fine if you don’t want to, I just, um…” Keefe mumbled, confidence lost.
Tam realized he should probably say something.
“Uh, I, uh, I mean, uh,” Tam said, trying to figure out how to speak. “I, yeah?”
Keefe looked up.
“Wait what?” He asked.
“Yes.” Tam said.
For a second, they just stared at each other. Then Fitz and Biana started screaming outside.
“Finally!” Fitz shouted.
“I knew it would work!” Biana said, matching Fitz’s volume.
“Can you let us out now?” Keefe and Tam said at the same time.
“Oh. Right.” Biana said, unlocking it.
Keefe slammed the door open and ran at Fitz and Biana. They just stood there with matching smiles, and then glittered away.
“So, uh, what now?” Tam asked Keefe, who was still glaring at the spot where the siblings had been standing.
“I’m not exactly sure.” Keefe said. “Do you want to go to Atlantis sometime?”
“Sure, how about this Friday after school?” Tam said, the butterflies returning.
“That works for me!” Keefe said. “See you tomorrow!”
“See you!” Tam said, letting himself smile.
Tam lifted his home crystal to the light, and glittered away, excited to tell Linh about Keefe.
