The shape of us

Work Text:

Seoul was never really quiet-but softer somehow. Like all the sharp edges of the day had been sanded down into something gentler.

Jin rested his forearms against the cold railing of the balcony, the metal biting lightly into his skin through the thin fabric of his shirt but He didn't move away.

The chill helped, Grounded him Because his mind wouldn't stop thinking about Tomorrow.
The word sat heavy in his chest, heavier than it should've been for something he had wanted for so long. Tomorrow was their release day.

It's been Four years...Four years of waiting, of distance, of growing into different versions of themselves separately... and now somehow, impossibly, they were here together again.

It still felt strange to think it like that. Not because it wasn't true-but because it was. Because it was real again in a way that had once felt... uncertain.

Jin exhaled slowly, his breath fogging faintly in the air. He should've been sleeping. They all should've been. There were schedules tomorrow, interviews, the release, the reactions-everything hitting at once. The kind of day that would swallow them whole if they weren't steady.

But sleep hadn't come, Not with his thoughts running like this. He tilted his head back slightly, eyes drifting up toward the sky. The stars were faint, barely visible against the city glow, but he looked for them anyway.

"What if..."

The thought came uninvited, quiet but sharp.

What if it's not the same?

His fingers tightened slightly around the railing.

What if people moved on?

What if they did?

He swallowed hard. It wasn't fear of failure, They had failed before. They had succeeded before too. They knew both sides of it better than most. But this was different. This wasn't just a comeback, This was... return.

Jin let out a soft, breathy laugh under his breath, though there was no real humor in it.

"Hyung, you're overthinking again." He could almost hear the others teasing him if they were here. He could imagine the way Jungkook would pout, or Taehyung would tilt his head like he already knew what Jin was thinking without him saying a word. Namjoon would probably say something thoughtful. Something grounding. Something that made too much sense.

Jin's lips curved faintly at that. But still... the thoughts stayed. He thought about the recording sessions. The late nights. The way they had slowly found their rhythm again-not immediately, not perfectly, but piece by piece. Like relearning something your body once knew by heart but had forgotten in the silence.

There had been moments where it clicked. Where it felt exactly the same. Where one look across the room was enough. And then there had been moments where it didn't. Where there was hesitation. Where time felt... visible.

He closed his eyes briefly. "Four years is a long time," he murmured softly.

A lot can change in four years, People change. Feelings can change. Even love changes-sometimes it softens, sometimes it deepens, or sometimes... it fades.

His chest tightened at that thought, and he quickly pushed it away. Still... the worry lingered in quieter ways.

What if the world didn't feel them the same way anymore?
What if the stage didn't feel like home?
What if-

Jin exhaled again, longer this time, his shoulders dropping slightly as if trying to physically release the weight of his thoughts.

"...But what if it does?" The question slipped out before he could stop it.

What if people were waiting?
What if the love was still there-just quieter, but stronger?
What if tomorrow wasn't something to fear...
...but something to finally breathe into?

His fingers loosened their grip on the railing. That's when the Excitement flickered under the worry-small, but real. He could feel it in the way his chest warmed unexpectedly, in the way his lips almost curved again without permission.

He was excited. Of course he was because He had missed this. He had Missed them. He Missed the chaos, the noise, the feeling of standing on stage and knowing-knowing-that no matter how overwhelming it got, they were there together.

Jin opened his eyes again, letting them fall back to the city.

He was so lost in the quiet shift of his own thoughts that he didn't notice the sound of the balcony door sliding open behind him. He Didn't notice the soft footsteps. He Didn't notice anything at all-Until warmth wrapped around his waist.

Jin's breath hitched, just slightly, his body tensing for a split second before the familiarity settled in.

Then A smile spreads across his face, like it was already waiting to happen. He doesn't need to turn around. He already knows who it is.

"Namjoon-ah..."

Namjoon doesn't let go. If anything, his hold tightens just slightly after Jin says his name-like a quiet confirmation, like yeah, it's me. His chin brushes lightly against Jin's shoulder as he settles in properly behind him, chest warm and steady against Jin's back. For a moment, he doesn't say anything. Just breathe the jin scent. Then, softly-his voice low, a little rough from the late hour-

"What are you doing out here, hyung?"

It's not just a question. There's something underneath it. Something that already knows Jin isn't just standing here.

Jin exhales through his nose, a small smile still resting on his lips, though it softens at the edges. " I Couldn't sleep," he answers simply.

Namjoon hums against him, the sound vibrating faintly through Jin's back. His arms remain wrapped around Jin's waist, hands loosely clasped together, thumbs brushing absentmindedly over the fabric of his shirt.

"Mhm. Thought so."

A quiet pause settles between them again, but it doesn't feel empty.

Namjoon shifts just enough to press a slow, lingering kiss to Jin's temple. It makes Jin's eyes flutter shut for a second.

"And?" Namjoon murmurs near his ear, voice softer now. "What were you thinking about?"

Jin lets out a breath that almost turns into a laugh.

"Everything."

Namjoon huffs quietly, his lips brushing the shell of Jin's ear as he speaks. "That sounds about right."

Jin leans back more fully into him without even thinking about it, his weight settling naturally against Namjoon's chest, Like his body already knows where it fits best.

"About Tomorrow," Jin says after a moment.

He feels Namjoon still just a little behind him-not pulling away, just... listening to him more carefully now.

"About The release....you know The comeback, and .... about Us."

Namjoon doesn't interrupt him. He Doesn't rush him. He Just presses another soft kiss, this time just behind Jin's ear, slow enough that it lingers.

Jin swallows lightly, gaze still fixed on the city.
"I'm excited," he admits. "I really am."

A pause.

Then, quieter- "But I'm also... a little worried."

Namjoon's hands shift slightly at his waist, just grounding him-like a silent keep going.

Jin's fingers curl faintly against the railing again, though not as tense as before.

"It's been four years," he continues. "That's... not small."

Namjoon hums softly in agreement, his nose brushing Jin's hair for a brief second.

"A lot can change in that time."

Another kiss-this time to his shoulder, right where his shirt dips slightly.

Jin exhales slowly. "What if it's not the same?" he says, the words are quieter now, more honest than ever.  "Not in a bad way, just... different."

He tilts his head slightly, unconsciously giving Namjoon more space as his lips linger near his skin.

"What if we go on stage and something feels off? Or people don't react the way they used to?" His voice dips just a little lower.

"What if they don't feel us the same way anymore?"

For a second, the only sound is the distant city.
Then Namjoon breathes out softly against his neck.

"Seokjin-ah...." There's a faint smile in his voice.

"You really are overthinking."

Jin lets out a quiet scoff, but there's no bite to it. "I said that already."

Namjoon chuckles under his breath, the sound low and warm. He shifts slightly, resting his cheek briefly against the side of Jin's head.

"Can I tell you something?"

Jin hums in response, eyes still on the skyline.

"I had the same thought," Namjoon admits.

Jin blinks, just slightly surprised. Namjoon presses another kiss to his temple, slower this time.

"During recording," he continues. "There were moments where I thought... is this how it used to feel?" His arms tighten just a fraction-not restricting anything, just pulling him closer.

"And then there were moments where it was exactly the same, Like nothing changed at all."

Jin's shoulders drop a little more at that. Namjoon shifts again, his lips brushing Jin's ear as he speaks, voice quieter now.

"I think both can exist at the same time."

Jin doesn't answer right away. He just listens to him. He Feels the steady rise and fall of Namjoon's chest behind him. He Feels the way his hands absentmindedly trace small, slow movements against his waist. He Feels another soft kiss-this time at the corner of his jaw.

"And I don't think different is a bad thing," Namjoon adds.

Jin exhales slowly. "...Yeah," he murmurs.

Namjoon nudges his head lightly against Jin's.

"You know what hasn't changed though?"

Jin's lips twitch faintly. "What?"

Namjoon doesn't answer immediately. Instead, he presses a soft, lingering kiss to Jin's shoulder again. Then another, just slightly higher.

"You, and me" he says finally. "Us."

"That's cheesy."Jin huffs quietly, but it's softer this time.

"Mhm," Namjoon hums, completely unbothered. "But true."

Jin shakes his head a little, though he leans back even more into him, fully relaxed now.

"What about ARMY?" he asks after a moment, voice quieter again. "What if they expect too much?"

Namjoon goes still for just a second. Then his hands shift, one of them sliding up slightly to rest more firmly against Jin's side.

"They always have," he says simply.

Jin blinks at that. Namjoon presses a small kiss just below his ear.

"And we've never given them everything," he continues. "We've just given them... us...we gave them bts. "

Jin's chest rises slowly.

"That's all we can do tomorrow too."

A pause. Then, softer-

"And it's always been enough."

Jin doesn't respond immediately. He just breathes in, he Lets the words settle inside him. He Lets the warmth behind him settle even deeper.

Namjoon's hold doesn't loosen. If anything, it becomes more natural, like this is just where they're supposed to be-standing here, looking out at the city, talking about things they don't usually say out loud.

After a while, Jin lets out a small, quiet laugh.
"You always say things like that," he mutters.

Namjoon smiles against his skin, pressing one last gentle kiss to his temple.

"Someone has to," he replies softly.

Jin hums, eyes still on the city-but they're softer now.

"...I'm still nervous," he admits.

"I know."

"...But I think I'm more excited."

Namjoon's arms tighten just a little in response, a silent acknowledgment.

"Good," he murmurs.

Jin lets himself lean fully into him, no hesitation left in the movement. And Namjoon keeps talking. He is Not talking about anything heavy this time-just small things, random thoughts slipping in and out, like he's deliberately trying to keep the air light.

"You know," Kim Namjoon murmurs near his ear, voice low, thoughtful in that absent way he gets, "the city looks calmer from up here... like it's pretending it has everything together."

Jin huffs softly. "Seoul? And Calm?" he mutters. "That's new."

Namjoon smiles against his temple, breath warm. "Give it a few hours. Tomorrow it'll be chaos again."

" And i know Jungkook's definitely not sleeping right now," Namjoon adds casually. "He'll act like he's fine, but he'll be pacing somewhere."

Jin's lips twitch.

"Mhm...And Taehyung?"

"He'll say something completely off-script tomorrow and somehow make it sound deep."

Jin lets out a quiet breath, softer this time. "And you'll explain it like it was planned."

Namjoon chuckles, the sound low and easy. "Someone has to."

The conversation drifts like that-light, unimportant, grounding in a way that doesn't try too hard.

Jin listens to him, Half of his attention to the words. The other half... somewhere quieter Because his gaze has dropped to Namjoon's hands.

It is Still wrapped around his waist. It is Still absentmindedly moving, thumb brushing slow, lazy patterns against the fabric of his shirt.
And There....A small shift in the light catches it.

The ring.

Jin stills slightly, eyes softening as they focus on it. He knows that ring. He'd spent way too long choosing it.

Namjoon keeps talking, unaware for a second, his voice low and calm near Jin's ear, but Jin isn't really listening anymore Because that quiet, unexpected warmth spreads in his chest again.

"You still wear this one..." The words slip out before he can stop them.

Namjoon pauses Just for a second. Then hums, like he already knows exactly what Jin's looking at.

"How can I not," he says, a smile clear in his voice, "when you purposely made sure it only fits on my ring finger?"

Jin's head snaps up slightly, immediately frowning. "Yah- I told you it's not like that."

His ears are already starting to turn red.
"I didn't do it on purpose."

"Yeah, yeah... sure." Namjoon lets out a quiet laugh, the sound warm against his skin.

Jin scoffs, finally shifting, turning slightly in his hold to glare at him-but Namjoon's arms don't leave his waist. They move with him.

"You're unbelievable," Jin mutters, clearly flustered now. "Everyone keeps saying that like I planned it or something-"

And then- Namjoon kisses him. It's sudden and firm, cutting straight through Jin's words before he can finish them.

Jin freezes for half a second, eyes widening slightly before he pushes lightly against Namjoon's chest.

"Yah- I'm talking-"

His face is flushed now, his voice a little uneven as he tries to continue scolding him. But Namjoon just looks at him like that-like he's not taking any of it seriously.

"Sorry,..it wasn't planned either" he murmurs And then kisses him again, Slower this time.

Jin exhales against his lips, the protest dissolving somewhere between annoyance and something else entirely. His hands hesitate for a second before settling against Namjoon's chest, fingers curling into the fabric like he's deciding whether to push him away -but he doesn't.

Namjoon's grip tightens slightly at his waist, pulling him closer, closing whatever space Jin had tried to keep between them. The kiss deepens. There's weight in it now. Something that had been building all night finally finding a place to land.

Jin makes a soft, frustrated sound under his breath-but it melts into the moment, into the way he leans in instead of away. His hand slides up, fingers brushing along Namjoon's neck, feeling the warmth there, the steady pulse beneath his skin-then into his short hair. He tugs lightly, just enough to draw a quiet reaction.

Namjoon exhales against him, the breath warmer now, uneven for a second as his hold tightens again, one hand shifting higher along Jin's side, pulling him closer-closer than before, like he's trying to erase even the smallest space between them.

Jin tilts his head just slightly, meeting him properly now. What starts soft doesn't stay that way-there's a quiet urgency threading through it now, not rushed but felt, like both of them are suddenly very aware of everything they hadn't said earlier.

Jin's fingers curl tighter in Namjoon's hair, anchoring him there as he leans in more, responding fully now. There's a subtle shift-softness edged with something sharper when he bites lightly at Namjoon's lower lip before pulling back just enough to breathe.

"...You're annoying," he murmurs, voice low, his breath warm.

Namjoon smiles at him-he can feel it. "Mm," he hums, already leaning in again.

Jin huffs softly, but he doesn't move away, Not even a little bit.

Their foreheads rest together for a brief moment, breaths uneven, mingling in the small space between them.

Jin's eyes fall shut for a second. And in that quiet pause- Everything settles.

Namjoon presses another kiss to him-softer at first, almost like he's easing back- but it doesn't stay soft long.

His hands tighten, pulling Jin flush against him, grounding him there, and Jin responds just as easily now, one hand sliding from his hair to his collar, gripping lightly, holding him close like he has no intention of letting go. The kind of closeness that doesn't need to be explained.

The night stretches around them. The city is still glowing. Tomorrow is still waiting. But Jin's thoughts don't drift there anymore. Because all he can feel is this- The warmth of Namjoon's hands. The steady way he holds him. The quiet familiarity of him. The way everything, no matter how uncertain, always seems to come back to this one person.

He loves him. He loves his Namjoon. Not in a way that needs to be loud. Not in a way that needs to be proven. But in a way that stays...Through distance...Through time...Through doubt.

And he knows without needing to ask that Namjoon feels it too...Maybe the same...Maybe even more.

Jin smiles softly against him, breath still warm, hands still holding on. And when Namjoon leans in again- Jin meets him without hesitation, like it's instinct now, like his body already knows the rhythm of this-of him. Namjoon follows easily, but then- he bumps slightly into the railing behind Jin.

A dull clink.

Jin freezes for a second then lets out a soft laugh against his lips, pulling back just enough to look at him.

There it is. That clumsy, slightly flustered look.

Jin's smile widens, eyes softening, fond in love.

Namjoon huffs, clearly trying to recover, but before he can- Jin kissed him. His eyes fluttering shut for just a second as he leans into him again,Because he chooses to. Namjoon nudges their noses together lightly, a quiet, wordless question.

Jin answers it the only way he needs to—by closing the distance again, softer now, slower, like something settled rather than searching.
When they part,  Jin lets out a small breath, the hint of a laugh still there as he murmurs, almost to himself—

“…We’ll be okay.”

Namjoon doesn’t hesitate. “Yeah,” he says, just as quietly. His grip tightens—not to hold on, but to remind. I’m here.

Jin hmm softly, finally pulling back just enough to glance out at the city again—but this time, he doesn’t feel lost in it...Just… part of it...Part of something bigger...Part of them.

And for the first time that night, when he thinks about tomorrow— He doesn’t feel afraid.
He just feels ready.
