Chapter Text
“I'm genuinely so confused, Nat. I have no idea what the hell is going on.”
They had been arguing about this for the past few weeks, and nothing could ever seem to resolve the confusion lingering in Chance's head. She blew out a puff of smoke and sighed. “Honestly, I never thought I'd experience something like this. I always thought romance was impossible for me, and now I don't know if I'm delirious, or if there's actual feelings!”
Natasha rolled her eyes beside her and looked at her with irritation. Was Chance really that stupid? She took a drag from the cigarette she was holding, before answering in an annoyed tone. “There's nothing to be delirious about. I get this is your first crush, but are you seriously telling me that you can't tell if you want to be with her or not?”
“Yes! I'm serious!” The brunette was getting tired of repeating the same thing over and over. It was like Natasha wasn't listening. “I don't understand. I want to be close to her, and I guess it would be nice to actually be in a relationship, but I don't feel the need to have sex with her. Aren't you supposed to want to sleep with people you like?”
“So you don't want to fuck Hill? Really?” Natasha mused with a small smirk, raising a perfectly shaped eyebrow at her.
“I mean, I wouldn't mind having sex with her, but I don't necessarily feel the need or desire to.” Chance answered hesitantly, like she wasn't sure of what she wanted. And, honestly, she wasn't. She had obviously had sex before, but every time, it hadn't been a strong desire like for other people. It felt good, and she liked it, but she didn't have any need to have it.
“Then, you're asexual. easy as that” Natasha answered with a sense of finality, like her response had finally cleared the fog.
“Also no. I've had sex before, and I liked it.” Chance was only getting more confused.
“Asexual doesn't necessarily mean you don't have sex, just that you don't desire it.” The redhead let out a short laugh at her friend's confusion, before she kept going with her explanation. “There's plenty of asexual people who don't experience sexual attraction, but still like having sex”
“I guess that makes sense, because I do find her attractive. Whatever. Listen, I have to go and finish some paperwork, can we talk about this another time?”
Natasha rolled her eyes and sighed, putting out her cigarette and stretching her arms over her head. “Fine, I gotta go work out with Clint anyways. See ya later, Chancey.” And with that, she started to walk back inside the building.
Chance chuckled at the nickname. She also finished smoking and walked back inside, heading to the break room to finish working and get a cup of coffee.
After a while, she was finally done with the paperwork, and went up to Maria's office to give it to her. She knocked on the door and waited for a response, before walking in and closing the door behind her. “Hey, Commander, I got the report on my last mission.”
Maria looked up from her computer and smirked, amused at the use of her title. “It's Deputy Director Hill to you, Batsky.”
“Oh, I'm sorry, I thought I was allowed to call you Ria?” Chance grinned and raised an eyebrow, knowing that the nickname would annoy the older woman.
Maria, as expected, rolled her eyes and looked back at her with a fake stern expression. “Just give me the damn file, Chance.”
“Fine, fine, spoilsport. Here's the file, let me know if you need anything else.”
“Actually, yeah, I need to ask you a few things.” Hill grabbed the papers from Chance's hands, and looked up at her, crossing her arms.
Chance raised an eyebrow in question, but didn't answer, letting her speak.
“First of all, Clint invited us all to drink tonight. I assume you'll be there?”
“Always, I'd never turn down the offer to drink.”
“Good. Second, I need someone to take over for Coulson tomorrow. He was supposed to train the rookies but Fury needs him for a sudden mission.”
“And I need to do it?” The brunette's eyebrows raised in surprise. Maria knew she wasn't good with teaching. Why was she asking her?
“No one else can. I know you don't like the kids, they're cocky and don't listen, but I'll be there too. If they do something stupid I'll kick their asses.” Maria reassured her with a soft but amused smile, knowing that leaving Chance alone with a bunch of kids could easily end up with someone slammed into a wall.
“Alright, fine. But only because I get to see you all sweaty and half naked.” Chance answered with a smirk. She made it sound like a joke, but truly, she was serious. Maria during training was a sight to see.
“Of course. Pervert.” The taller one rolled her eyes, but let a small smile slip. She knew she was attractive, and she liked hearing it.
“That I am. Well, I expect to see you in your best outfit tonight. Bye bye, Ria.” Chance smirked at her one last time, before turning around and walking out of the office, her hips swaying more than necessary.
Maria noticed the extra sway, but didn't say anything. She just licked her lips and sighed, going back to her paperwork.
That night, they all met up at the usual bar, ordered a few drinks and sat down to chat. Natasha and Wanda immediately went to the dance floor, enjoying their time together after Nat had been on a mission for a week.
Maria was sitting at a booth with Clint and a couple other agents, trying to distract herself. Lately, she had been feeling weird. This feeling had settled in her chest. This… was it longing? She wasn't sure. She just knew that Chance hadn't arrived yet, and the thought of her not coming hurt.
After a few long, agonizing minutes, she finally saw the brunette walking through the door, and her breath caught in her throat. Chance wasn't wearing anything exceptional, just a pair of jeans and a crop top, showing off her cleavage and outlining the shape of her ass. God, that ass… Maria couldn't get herself to stop staring at it.
She took a deep breath and composed herself, flagging the other girl down with her arm. When Chance finally looked at her she felt her stomach twist.
The younger walked over to their table and said hi to the rest of the group, before sitting down next to Maria and smiling at her. The short haired woman smiled back and put her arm around her shoulders. “Finally decided to grace us with your presence, princess?”
Chance chuckled and tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. “Sorry, it took me a long time to get ready.”
Maria gave her a once-over, her eyes lingering on her chest, before she looked back at her. “If being late is what got you to look this pretty, then there's no problem.”
The younger rolled her eyes, trying to act like the compliment didn't fluster her. “Haha, Hill, you're so funny. Are you drunk already?”
“Me? I would never drink without you. How dare you?”
“There's a half-empty glass of whiskey in front of you.”
“I saved the rest for you. Because I'm a gentleman.”
“Oh, are you? Since when?” Chance raised an eyebrow.
“Since always. Don't I always open the door for you?” She questioned with a smirk, her free hand reaching out to pull down the other woman's brow.
“Alright, touchè. But, seriously, do you mind getting me a drink, since you're such a gentlewoman?”
“It shall be my pleasure, princess.” The older one patted her head before sliding out of her seat, going up to the bar to order a drink. She knew Chance mostly only drank vodka, so she didn't need to be told.
While she waited for her drink back at the table, Chance grabbed a mirror from her purse and checked her makeup. She had spent at least an hour getting ready, and clearly her plan to ‘make an impression’ was working.
But not only on Hill. While she checked herself in the mirror, she felt someone sit next to her. She turned her head to look at the person, expecting to see Maria, and her eyes widened in surprise when she noticed a man.
He had a smug smirk on his face, slicked back hair, a tropical button-up opened at the top, and a cologne that was way too strong. Her nose immediately scrunched up in disgust when she smelt it, the strong scent stinging.
Before she could even process the situation, the man had wrapped his arm around her neck and opened his mouth to speak. “Hey, sweetheart. What's a beauty like you doing here all alone?”
When Chance finally answered, there was clear disgust in her voice, mixed with a tad of irritation. “I'm not alone. And frankly, it's none of your business.”
The man laughed, the sound grating and annoying. “You're feisty, huh? I'm only trying to compliment you, honey, don't get your panties in a twist. Not yet, at least.”
“Excuse me?” The innuendo was the worst part of that sentence. Did he really think that making sexual comments was the way to bag a woman? She took a deep breath before opening her mouth again to answer. “Listen, dude, if you-”
She was interrupted by the sound of someone clearing their throat, and looked up to see Maria with her drink in hand, staring down at the man with a death glare. Suddenly, relief flooded Chance's chest.
Maria put the drink down on the table and crossed her arms, taking a deep breath. “Is everything alright here?”
The man raised an eyebrow at her serious demeanor, the smirk still on his face. “All good, just making conversation with the pretty lady.”
“The pretty lady is taken.”
The man's eyes raised in surprise. He clearly wasn't expecting the comment. “By who?”
“By me. Get the fuck away from my girlfriend.”
Suddenly, the man wasn't so cocky anymore. Realizing his mistake, and, as it should be, being absolutely terrified of Maria, he cleared his throat and removed his arm from Chance's shoulders, getting up from his seat. “Ah, I'm, uh, sorry, I didn't know she was busy..”
Chance immediately relaxed when she felt the man move and Maria take his place, sitting down next to her and wrapping her arm around her waist. She placed her hand over Maria's, moving closer and playing along.
The man looked at them and muttered another apology, before finally walking away.
Both women relaxed, happy that he had finally left. The older let go of her waist, moving to grab Chance's drink and pass it to her. The other woman thanked her with a look and took the glass, taking a sip.
“Thank you.”
Maria looked down at her, giving her a small smile. She was happy to have helped, and a small, protective feeling settled in her chest. “You don't have to thank me, Chance. I wasn't going to let a pervert harass you.”
“I know, but, thank you.”
“You're welcome, princess. Now, as you promised, start getting drunk.”
Chance laughed at the sudden change of subject, but listened to the older woman and got drinking.
