"Would you still love me if I was a worm?"
Azul paused his writing when he heard it. He looked off into the distance for just a moment, pondering a multitude of different questions. Slowly, he brought his hands up to his face, removed his glasses, and ran his fingertips along his forehead.
"You came all the way to my office just to ask me that...?"
"I believe it's an important question. To take delight in someone even after they take a form deemed inhumane to love..."
Why? What did it even mean? Questioning the logistics of becoming a worm and the morals behind still cherishing it as a romantic partner was a complete waste of time. That didn't mean Azul wasn't going to do it.
"It's not as simple as that," Azul retorted, "I mean, would you still have the ability to speak? To tell me that you're still interested in me?"
"Has a worm ever talked to you?" Jade cooed.
Okay, so he was playing the 'make Azul feel dumb' game. A regular worm, hm. If he couldn't speak, what about Jade would still be preserved after his transformation?
"Then what about you would still be you? How could I continue a romantic relationship with a creature with no way of telling me how it feels?"
Jade's expression melted into a frown. "A creature? My, you wound me. The only alteration would be to my body and its capabilities. I'd still be me inside."
He made it seem like life or death. Like Azul's answer to this question would shape his reputation for the rest of his life. To love or not to love...a worm. A Jade worm. Obviously, he loved Jade for more than just his appearance. That was, in truth, the last thing on his mind—everything else about Jade could fill his head just as easily. His slyness, his attention to detail, his air of domesticity yet ability to feel completely at home in the wilderness...that was Jade. And to know that an invertebrate version of him could still hold those same notions...well, Azul didn't see what was so wrong about it, now that he had really gotten to think. Maybe he'd even like it more, considering that at Jade's current size, Azul didn't have the pleasure of being able to trap him under a cup as punishment.
Azul glanced up. Jade was smirking, surely ravishing in Azul's misery. But Azul wasn't fazed. He grasped his glasses and gently slid them back onto his face, clearing his throat.
"Then I suppose I would."
At that, Jade chuckled, slowly took Azul's hand in his, and lifted it to his mouth for a kiss.
