Kept Warm

Summary:

It's strange seeing him without the cloak, he looks so much less intimidating, less like an infallible stone wall and more like a simple man within your reach.

Work Text:

Regardless where you go in Snezhnaya it is all the same: cold. The snow that crunches underneath your boots, the snowflakes that make home on your lashes, the bite of the icy wind. It's just cold, cold, cold.

You glance up from the path Capitano has unintentionally cut out for you with his own steps in the snow to his back. You've never once seen him shiver, but maybe it's due to his cryo delusion and he's resonating with the ice around him or he's truly unbothered. Either way you envy it a little as you tuck your hands into your coat and hide your head in the high collar and scarf.

Your mind begins to wander to how he found you lost in a desert of white terribly under dressed for a blizzard barely conscious. How he cradled you close to himself and wrapped you in his cloak issuing orders you could barely hear let alone understand.

Every time you blinked you would see something new one moment in blinding snow, the next alone bundled in a tent so much warmer it felt painful, and then the next with him by your side asking for your name and whatever else you could muster. You remember being so annoyed and frustrated by his questions as he repeated them over and over even after you had given your answer. You now know it was to keep you awake, lucid, and to ensure you weren't making things up that your story was clear and reliable.

The few days you were under his care out in that blizzard(which you learned wasn't a natural one it was made to protect you from whatever danger lurked out there until they could successfully snag you) you barely remember but you do remember the way he spoke to you as you both passed under ice sculpted gates to where your journey would begin by his side.
The calm and firm assurance of your safety even if you were to be under the ruthless care of the Fatui. Your role as one from beyond Teyvat's borders would be simple: record and report. Keep a record of the goings of the world and report if any inconsistencies occur. A tall ask for someone who barely knows the world but far less daunting for you now than it originally seemed back then.

A chill rushes through your spine and you can't help but sneeze breaking the silence between you. You're too busy burying your face further into your scarf to notice he has stopped moving until you feel the heavy and familiar weight of his cloak on your shoulders.

It's strange seeing him without the cloak, he looks so much less intimidating, less like an infallible stone wall and more like a simple man within your reach. He turns back around and continues guiding you towards your shared destination of the library so you can perform a routine data check the warmth of his coat stopping the cold from reaching you.
