Merry Christmas

Summary:

Christmas with Ryder

Work Text:

A weight leaping up on the bed woke me, “Mhh?” I opened my eyes and saw Jasper staring down at Ryder next to me, “mhh…” Goose must be on the floor by the bed, too old to do much jumping.

I could see that it was still somewhat dark out, the only light being the colorful glow from the christmas tree in the living room. It must be early but these cats don’t care what time it is, they’re hungry and they’re gonna wake you.

I closed my eyes and heard Ryder groan, “I’m coming, I’m coming.” His voice was hoarse as he slowly got up to feed the cats. “Paticence is a virtue…” He grumbled as he shuffled out of the bedroom. Chuckling I turned over, falling back asleep.

Some time later I was woken up again, this time by Ryder. I groaned lowly causing him to smirk, “Merry Christmas, prinzessin.” He said, handing me a cup of coffee.

I sat up slowly and accepted the cup, “Merry Christmas.” He got back in bed beside me and I leaned against him, sipping on the hot coffee. “Did we get snowed in?” I’ve always loved the snow and getting snowed in would mean I got to spend longer with Ryder, otherwise he’d have to go to work around noon.

He smirked but shook his head, “Not this year.” I groaned into my cup as he petted my hair soothingly, “There is snow though, just not enough to trap us.”

After a few minutes I finished my coffee, “Time for presents?” I asked excitedly as I got up to put my mug in the sink.

Ryder nodded, following behind me. “We should before I have to get ready for work.” I quickly put the cup in the sink and rushed over to the christmas tree, sitting beside it while Ryder sat in his spot on the old worn couch covered in scratches from Goose and Jasper.

He motioned for me to open one while he lit a cigarette, “Go on.” There were only a handful of presents but that was more than enough for me. I opened the first one to find a first edition of one of my favorite books.

My head shot up as I clutched the book to my chest, “How?” He’s not the most well off and I know his gran didn’t get it otherwise he would have said, so how did he get his hands on a first edition?

Ryder only chuckled, ashing his cigarette in the ashtray on the side table. “Don’t worry about that prinzessin.” I huffed but accepted his non answer and continued opening the other gifts.

Now that I had opened my gifts it was time to give Ryder his gift. It took me a while to save up the money he gave me, just small amounts here and there to get myself things, but it was worth it. Goose and Jasper are getting really up there in age and have been sick so it's been really rough but recently he’s talked about getting another cat so I decided to get one at the shelter. I saw what looked to be an oriental short hair and just had to get him, they look so goofy and I love them.

Ryder was quiet as I brought the kitten out, their ears almost dwarfing their little body. “I know you've been talking about getting another cat.” I began sheepishly, “So I thought it’d be nice to get one, his name is Miso.” I handed the kitten to Ryder, hoping he’d take this well. I know he’s been talking about it but he’s always been sensitive about this kind of stuff.

It took a few moments but he finally smiled, a genuine smile. “Miso, huh?” He nodded to himself, “I like it.”

I couldn’t help but also smile, “So we can keep them?”

He chuckled and nodded, petting Miso. “We can.”
